General / Off-Topic Researching if, subscription video on demand services are reducing video piracy in the UK

Hi Commander’s,

I recently posted a questionnaire relating to which Subscription Video on Demand services they used in the UK, to watch films and TV shows, as part of a research project I am doing for my dissertation. I am happy to say that I have plenty of participants who participated in completing this questionnaire, to now move on to submitting a follow up questionnaire.

If you haven’t participated on the previous questionnaire, and you would like to, then here is the link to the first questionnaire: Researching to find out, which SVOD service is the most popular in the UK CLOSED

The second questionnaire following on from the previous questionnaire, is “Researching if, subscription video on demand services are reducing video piracy in the UK”.

This questionnaire is asking if you do source, have sourced or have not sourced, unauthorised copyright media to watch films or TV shows.

The questionnaire is open to anyone living in the UK, who is over the ages of 18 and is happy to answer questions relating to a taboo subject; video piracy.

All questions being asked are anonymous, stored on a password protected computer, are for study reasons only, and, your responses will only be recorded after you have submitted your answers.

If you are happy to volunteer in completing this questionnaire, please follow this link: Researching if, subscription video on demand services are reducing video piracy in the UK

Thanks :)

Happy to do this.

I do believe that sub streaming is reducing piracy. I'm guilty of it myself but usually because I don't want to wait. I pay into Netflix and Prime but they can be slow to get content or release it to subscription customers. I wouldn't mind paying a little more for each if there was some measurable way of ensuring they get the most recent stuff on quicker and for longer.

It will be interesting to see if anyone defends stealing by attesting that it cuts down on stealing.

You never know until you ask :)

I agree, they do need to add newer content quicker, and hopefully, they will when they have more competition.

More competition = more subs though to my mind. I'm not really interested in having a half dozen or more to be paying into to get content. Just my view maybe it won't come to that and I doubt it will. The big hitters like Netflix and Amazon have a huge hold on the current market.

Hopefully, they will come up with a way of combining the services together, like with what the BBC and ITV were going to do with the original SVOD service, if more people were interested at the time.

I have an Amazon Prime subscription but I still pirate stuff that's on it because the audio transcoding Amazon uses is atrocious and the pirates do better. Frankly, if I were uploading stuff from Amazon Prime to the private trackers I use, I'd be banned for failing to meet quality standards, and rightly so.

Netflix is usually tolerable though, and since I have a subscription to that too, it's generally easier to use it than to try to find a better version to download.

I'm not in the UK though.

I don't, not any more, but, I wish we had the same Netflix that they do in the USA here in the UK.

If we had I'm pretty certain Piracy would be near enough completely eliminated!

Done!

I subscribe to Netflix, and did have an Amazon free trial, but it lacked any content I wanted. (I did enjoy the music more though). Tempted to re-subscribe just for the music. Lol

I absolutely hate normal terrestrial TV, and sky, and basically anything with advertising in it.

My pirating dropped significantly when I had 2 streaming services going. And with 1 I still rarely download anything.
But my internet is slow, and unreliable, so I admit, I'll often download things, simply so I have some offline content to watch if my internet dies. Lol
(Because I hate watching normal TV, and won't pay for Sky)

If anything, I tend to download games to test them before buying, if they lack a demo, or might not run on my aging PC.

I'm hoping streaming keeps moving forward, so movie releases are much quicker, because I personally believe that's the reason for most pirating.
I don't want to buy a DVD/Blu-ray of a movie I'll only watch a handful of times.
I also hope Netflix can unify it's platform, so I can watch US content in the UK and whatnot.
US Netflix is so much better than the UK. Lol
I miss using Hola to trick Netflix... :(

I'd quite happily pay more for Netflix to gain access to their global entire library, and never pirate again. :)

Thanks for being honest.

I agree that we should have to the same content as USA, but with eliminating piracy, there will always be some who cannot afford to pay to subscribe and will choose to source their content a different way.

Hopefully, with the popularity of streaming services like Netflix, content creators will create a way to quickly allow other countries to have access to their creations. Until then, Netflix and Amazon have to create their own films or TV shows to attract more subscribers.
