An open letter poll petition thingy to FD - Free the Cobra Mk 4

The CM4 is one of the most versatile small ships in the game. It has its weaknesses, but also its strengths (mainly 8 slots on a small ship).

So, there are been some discussion on the Cobra Mk4 thread about how many wouldn't mind it if the CM4 was opened up for all players.

But there is a problem. It was promised as an exclusive. Its hard to go back on promises like that. Once done, that's it, nobody is going to believe FD again if they say something is exclusive, and there will be calls for other past exclusive items to be opened up again.

I'm sure some remember the stink some people kicked up over the gold wireframe paintjob for the Cobra when the original white wireframe was an exclusive.

But maybe there are some ways around this. One person suggested a Viper Mk 5 with the same characteristics as the CM4. But then it wouldn't be an iconic cobra. Another option would be a Cobra Mk5, similar to the Mk4 but with some tweaks. (but not any better - make a trade off somehow).

Or maybe give compensation to those with access to the CM4. Maybe an exclusive CM4 paintjob for them.

Maybe FD could run a poll on the topic? See whether anyone would object or has preferences?

Anyone any suggestions for how it could be done with minimal upset? Or whether you agree or object?

Yeah, considering the ships are what makes Elite Dangerous, it’s sad that I cannot get access to this ship simply because I am newer to the game. Paintjobs and/or decals make much more sense to me for exclusives.

Also, is there any rule that says that exclusives last forever? Perhaps Beyond 3.0 is the point where the Cobra Mk IV could be made available to newer commanders after the early Horizons customer enjoyed a year+ long exclusivity period?

It's slower than me after 10 pints of ye olde noggin-masher. Other than that it's great. Can't really see any reason not to let everyone have it to be honest.

I have access to the Cobra MKIV and I'd be more than happy for it to be made available to everyone.

IN future FD should put a time limit on the exclusiveness of these things.

I think no matter what FD would do in such a situation they'd anger a bunch of people.

Personally - I'm fine with opening it up. I can see how it would rub some people the wrong way though.

I figure I'll just stamp my feet and say no to it since that's what we do with those sorts of things around here. Exclusive is exclusive right? Not my fault people didn't pre-order! [smile]

As a suggestion, what has been done in the past is selling pre-order exclusives separately at a later date for a small fee. If people want it bad enough they'll pay for it I guess.. [money]. but does that then start veering toward selling ships and pay to win? <insert thinking emoji>

Maybe we'll just stick with no and stampy feet. [yesnod]

Yeah, I agree with this. Make it retroactively a time-limited exclusive and let those of us with LEP or preorderers have a custom (and maybe really nice) paint job.

It seems bizarre that there is a ship that anyone coming into the game now can’t possibly have.

Not really. Pre-order exclusives aren't a new concept.

I also have access to it and quite like it for mucking about in. I wouldn't get too upset if it was opened up for others. Maybe make it a reward for taking part in a CG would satisfy those who are a bit more bothered about it's exclusivity? That could also overcome the anomaly that PS4 had no way of qualifying for it. (Was it the PS4? - One of those box-type thingies anyway.)

Those who pre-ordered Horizons already got something much better. The gold skin for Asp explorer :D

Fine by me I'll even pay for the first 10 new owners ships, every other ship in the game can be accessed by everyone the only barrier being rank walls.

How about a ship of their choice for all existing owners? ;)

Yep, another person with Cobra IV access who is happy to drop the exclusivity.

Perhaps an exclusive skin would be enough compensation?

I think 3.0 is a reasonable opening with a new exclusive to take its place and bring in everyone pre 3.0.

A large official poll similar to the ship transfer would be appropriate.

As someone who does have access I’d vote yes to open it up.

Perhaps a white Cobra IV wireframe to replace the exclusive?

I can't, or won't, it's not like it's the best ship around.
If there are people so much longing for this ship and it matters that much to them then by all means give it to them.

As soon as people have enough money for a Python they'll soon forget the complete existence of the Cobra mk4 imho.

It's fine after you engineer it. OP, perhaps you seen the many other threads on this same topic, trust me it never ends well. There are quite a few that want it to remain exclusive, am not bothered personally. Considering how bad the last topic went, I doubt the Devs will go back on their word, it's just not worth the hassle.

I can already hear the cries and moans from players who never fly the ship, but don't want others to have access to it, because they need to feel a little bit more special.

Regardless, I don't think FDev want to go back on their word. It would set a precedent for all the existing and future limited edition stuff.

How about a Cobra Mk3 Heavy, with all the same internals as a CM4?

The CM4 can keep it's extra hardpoint.
That way it'd just require statistical shenanigans and no changes to the model.
And the party-poopers still have their exclusive CM4 with an extra gun.
