After Q1 drops I first need to get my exploring freak on, but yeah ... after that I'm game. That does sound like a great formula for a funny video! I'm up for that if you're serious about it![]()

On a side note, speaking of time away in the wilderness, I dusted off my Orbweaver gamepad last night
I have seen enough of free mode PvP to know it is not really viable in any unconstrained form for a game like ED.
I'm envious. I have had one of those since before they became popular in PvP but I just can't get on with it. I think it's a combination of being spoiled by an Apple Mac Wired with its zero key-travel and the thumb-thing not being quite right to me. My mate BreakfastMelon also couldn't get on with it, which surprised me but gave me a sense of validation. Still ... envious.
Maybe, but that would be just copying the pattern of life of certain other "popular MMOs"... at least some of us ONLY got involved with ED because it was NOT like them.I think it would be quite popular
It's a great piece of hardware for me, and for PvP it's the best I've used. Not really that much fun when I just want to play as a space trucker, though, compared to a decent HOTAS. What control hardware are you using? Do you mean that you game on a Mac???

Nah but started on Mac with BootCamp.
Logitech G502 plus the Mac KB plus CH pedals.
I've just Kickstarter backed the Lexip, which will either be game-changing or a complete waste but I'm finding it fun not knowing which.
Yes but I mean then those who choose to stay in the current galaxy could be granted the coveted PvP-Off option in the right panel...
FD ruled that one out a while back as I recall.Yes but I mean then those who choose to stay in the current galaxy could be granted the coveted PvP-Off option in the right panel...
I think it would be quite popular ... and I'm not actually joking. And I think that a surprising number would join it just to put their names on star systems or prove they could make a billion straight freighting under those conditions ... not even necessarily being players interested in firing a shot.
Very few people want this - most just don't want people getting away with being ats. Constantly mis-representing this position isn't helpful.Yes but I mean then those who choose to stay in the current galaxy could be granted the coveted PvP-Off option in the right panel...
Those people though - they'd love it.
Yes they would. The sound I would make if I could get my hands on that game would roughly translate as "Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"
How much do you enjoy Hellion?

Overall, everyone will have to just learn to live with the current status quo on balance. If they want a greater PvP focus, they will just have to get their fix elsewhere.
Think about how much you just limited your audience! Too limiting to attract anyone not heavily into PvP and with a chip on their shoulder with something to prove and no out of game commitments that could interrupt them - oh and great internet and power supply.
Those people though - they'd love it.

I'll answer OP's question with another question. Why are some players only interested in PvP? And for that matter only PvE?
For me, especially because all modes and instances are sharing the same galactic BGS, this game is so much more than just a PvP or PvE game.
When I'm playing in open, NPCs are just slower, dumber people, and players are just more dangerous and unpredictable NPCs. I don't seek out PvP for PvP's sake, it just happens when my goals directly conflict with that of another character, who just so happens to be a player.
This game isn't just an exploration game, in the same way that it is not just a combat or just a trading/economy game. It's a Milky Way simulation game. Part of that simulation being a central hub of humanity dropped in a vast void of lawless space. Part of that hub of humanity being agents (player or NPC) who don't want you to accomplish your goals. We can certainly play by only focusing on the activities we like, but as part of the whole simulation (especially in Open) we can't pretend that those other aspects don't, or shouldn't, exist just because they don't fit our schemes.
I think the main reason PvP is not as popular here as it is in other similar games is because the balance is so far out of whack.
Meta-PvPers far outclass even the most dangerous NPCs, while their player targets typically very much don't. They need to either nerf the combat ships, or buff all the other ships, probably a bit of both, to shorten (not close!) the gap.
When someone is fighting in a mid-sized, decently outfitted non-combat ship, the other player should never really be too afraid of dying, but that doesn't mean that non-combat ships should be inherently, excessively fragile. They should be able to try and put up enough of a fight long enough for a security response to give them a decent chance of escaping. Of course they could just run every time, but only ever having the option to immediately run just doesn't make for very enjoyable PvP encounters. There should be specialist type-locked module compartments, just like the military ones we've got now, that enable people to make purpose-built PvE/multipurpose ships that can still have respectable defensive solutions so it doesn't hold together like wet toilet paper against G5 Frags. While long fights can be tedious, short fights are equally unfun for the victims, and I can see a lot of room for improvement in making the playing field a bit more reasonable.
As long as people keep getting destroyed in 40 seconds or less, people will keep swearing off PvP.
new engineers are going to put EVERYONE on an even playing field. the days of thousands of G5 rolls for a thruster is pretty much over. honestly the unballance complaints are about to become redundant. and as someone who has rolled thousands of times for 2 PvP ships that's a welcome change.
i just hope that power-play PvP will be looked after.
Didn't read all 40-odd pages. In a word: Stacking. The ability to fill your ship with nothing but armor/SCB makes PVP unpopular with me.
It's not about pilot skill it's about attrition. He who's willing to sacrifice EVERY other aspect of their ship to stack the most most armor/SCBs wins. Leaves you with a ship fit for one purpose and one purpose only.
There's nothing tastier than finding one of these CMDRs moving between locations in their 'paper-thin' taxi ships. Best time to strike for maximum salt.
It's fun when I get called names and a coward when I won't turn my FAS, built for general play with some cargo capacity and an SRV etc, around to fight an FDL with nothing but HRP/SCBs on-board

Maybe so with yourself but it's endemic to any discussion with PvPers. They seem to have divided the world into "decent people" and "carebears" as if it were that simple - this instantly polarises the conversation and results in much of the horror-mess whenever any discussion is attempted. So please: if I've misrepresented the position, I think I've done it once. Not, I hope, constantly...
Sadly the game needs to be a commercial success and not just for you and your friends - or indeed anyone else's.Those are 100% of the people I want to play with, though
Interestingly it has all the hardcore elements some people say they want in space games and as a result it's unbearable for most.I haven't had the pleasure. Is it good?

Engineers are not the larger part of the problem, the core stacking mechanics are the root of the problem.Exactly my sentiment! I have a Corvette and an FdL, among others. Like I said, I like to engage in various activities in ED, so they are not stacked with HRPs, MRPs and SCBs. I have one of each on my Corvette. However, if I get in a fight against any PvP build, I don't stand a chance, even in a Corvette. Like someone said in a previous post, the imbalance is way over the top, because in large part of engineers.
That sounds similar to Diablo II/Diablo III, in both of those you could recover the items from your corpse.Helion did you say? Just had a glimpse and found this from their FAQ:
3. What happens when a player character dies?
When a player character is killed, your ship, items and equipment are left behind along with the body. Players are then presented with a choice, respawn, or create another character.
This comes close to iron man mode, which seems to be pretty unpopular under hardcore PvPer (for various understandable reasons).
