I Miss Player-Submitted Galnet

The player-submitted articles on Galnet added a lot of life and even depth (arguably the illusion of it) to the game I think, and I really miss having them.

Since they ended, the galaxy has felt drier and more stale. And although I forum a lot anyway, it's made foruming almost a requirement for gameplay. It was our in-game source to hear about new player-led discoveries, player-driven content, and just the general conspiracy and fluff that hells the universe feel real.

Hire more editors if you have to, or hire a team of FD "reporters" who'll accept tips and write about the goings-on in the community, but bring back a more vibrant Galnet! It's been a huge loss to the atmosphere of the game.

Awesome as it might be (have been) I'm not sure this feature would raise the revenue by an amount that would justify hiring a person just for that.

It needs to come back. If Fdev is worried about quality standards from user generated Galnet, might I remind them that Admiral Aden Tanner just embarrassed himself in front of the entire inhabited Bubble by pointing out something we all deduced months ago.

Seen that floating around, I really need to check it out. I don't think it has the same impact though as something in-game. In part because of how much information fragmentation can result.

The fact that players are happily going to these lengths on their own really shows much more FD could be doing and supporting these things.

I'd love to see an in-ship "newsfeeds" option, and read Sagittarius Eye in my ship, or switch over and browse Galnet. Or I could play Galnet audio, or switch channels and get in-game Radio Sidewinder.

It's these little things, like Radio Sidewinder's fantastic ads, that add so much. If I were FD, I'd be working on a basic API for whitelisted partners to get their own news channels and audio feeds into the game.

Why not have a subforum for ingame 'RP' (for want of a better term) which interfaces with Galnet? That way we'd have user-submitted news etc. that was also moderated. Posts could have a 24hr delay before going live on the game for extra moderation, even.

By very nature of ED a player or group of players can not have any real impact on the galaxy. The BGS yes, but big whoop and about as interesting as data entry. There are no real blockades or player wars that result in the loss or gain of strategic territory. This is not EvE.

The old player submitted news, although interesting, was nothing more than people pretending things were happening to inject some kind life into the game. Personally I dont see any benefit in FD putting money or resources into bringing this back.

Can't disagree really, but at the same time I think it would take less time to edit/vet a community article than writing content from scratch. Maybe there are other reason to why it stopped though? Does anyone know why?

TBH I hadn't noticed they had stopped although I havent spent a lot of time in cockpit recently, but do recall them bringing some variety to Galnet so would like to see them return if viable.

What I would think to be cool, if player factions could post their articles on the local news board at their station. (which is academic, because apparently FD haven't got the time to even accept new player factions in last couple months and this is actually a thing, or used to be, because I haven't seen any of it, lately)
Naturally, people being people, it wouldn't be possible without advisory or really clever filters, but I guess that would do the trick. I would be fine with GalNet being used as a devs to player communication, if it was actually used that way. I always thought how great it would be to go on GalNet, instead of Twitter or Forums. :D (I know it's a hyperbole - they do share useful in-game info, but there could be more)

But like I said, it all needs people

Pretty much this. People figured that out right away. The players are so far ahead of the story it's not even funny. Even now groups like Children of Raxxla and others are prepping to recheck all the major alien sites and such the moment Beyond goes live. Everything from those investigating sounds the probes / sensors make again, the alien map and structures, Guardian Ruins (especially since the trailer has new Guardian stuff), and everything else. The players are already long ahead in preparation. Heck I know some pilots are likely even checking the brain trees and surface pumpkin sites again just in case.

Not every article has to be player submitted, and even just 1 person could browse submissions from players before hitting upload (and fix typos and such), but we really need some player / commander submitted stuff. Not generic powerplay reports or long outdated information. At least add some more player submitted flavors.

Hell not just that either. There was that player who donated a long while back to that charity with the most amount or w/e and got that custom dragon painted cutter thats unique to him, and while that's a little TOO unique, perhaps have at least a yearly or twice a year contest for players to submit custom art designs and let the number one winner paint job become something sold on the Frontier store (winner gets design for free though), let players have some damn control in a game about the players already!

I miss them as well and with the text to voice coming for galnet it seems a shame not to bring them back as it is so empty on there nowadays unless you like reading about powerplay reports.

Perhaps if they could set up a community group of mods to vet them before they are added it could reduce their staff time?

I miss it as well, as it used to be a major feature part of the community in terms of submitted user Lore. Everything just feels like it's back on rails again.. :(

Well don't like player submitted stuff if it's not coherent with the established lore or hard to believe.

I don't. For the few ones that were good, the vast majority was filled with typos (and when a frenchman with a rather substandard english level can detect those, you know there's a problem), and amateurish. There has been a substantial work done by FD lately, regarding the game lore and storytelling, and it's heading in a good direction (at least one I like). But it needs to stay focused and strong. Players input could come back later on, when the fundations are solid enough.

Isn't the issue with this the fact that they would have to be translated by FDev staff to other languages? I think people tend to forget that ED is a game with the ability to switch language completely.

I miss it too. It was a big part of what made Elite Dangerous special.

Its a pity they couldnt just lump these into "The Daily Tattler" where its never lore, just random scraps of info that may or may not be useful.
