Horizons Small Cold Build

Ok, I am planning to do the 5 Black Market Sales needed to meet The Dweller.

Been looking at the "cold/smuggling" builds and not happy with what I am finding. Really surprised that no one has done a build specifically to make small high value runs with.

I am not planning a life of crime, just making the minimum 5 illicit sales so I am looking for the smallest, coldest, cheapest thing I can build.

In my case, it doesn't even need to jump very far since my plan is to go to a system where there is a Black Market, pick up something illegal in a USS and sell it at the local Black Market then move to the next system I know about (I have 7 where I already know there are BM's) and repeat the operation.

One thread I have read says that the Sidewinder was deliberately designed by the DEVS to have a lowered heat signature but I cannot find anything that supports that.

No point. Just find lawless systems and waltz in brass as you like. The locals won’t care. By the time you’ve researched and done a cold build you’d have completed those 5 BMs.

This is exactly what I did.

Wow.. Did you have to find 5 different factions??

There are some cold builds in open you can't even lock a target unless you are 100m of it, not sure what you have found but they do exist. But you don't need this to go and sell in the blackmarket. Actually, for selling 1T of 'whatever' find a low cost cargo, pay the fine of being scanned and get done with it.

You'd be better off just hopping in something small and quick, like a cobra, and boosting into the slot.
The requirement is to sell something in 5 different blackmarkets, not making profits in them. There is no need to boost at all, if your cargo is cheap enough you would get fined for that. Biowaste fine is something you can pay very well, what is that.. 11cr?

OK. This thread has now provided two completely separate unconventional ways of doing what I want to do, get access to THE DWELLER.

From the fun point of view, working out the build and smuggling the stuff in seems to be the prize.
Those lawless systems with Black Markets are pretty scarce and right now the closest one to where I am is a bit under 200LY, so it would take some time. But there is a cluster of them so once I got to the first one, the others would mostly be 1-2 jumps. Add to it that every route I have plotted will get me at least 8 UNEXPLORED systems to collect data to sell.
The buy/find garbage and pay the fine to sell it is clearly the quickest, but, since I expect to live to be 100 I still have 32 years to have fun playing the game.

As I have written before, I role play and my fictional character, D.D. Hariman, is generally law abiding. Not going to deal in drugs or slaves. Ancient Artifacts that can be found for free look like the way to go in the Lawless systems.

Found a Lawless only 9 jumps.
1st system Unexplored, 39 bodies, 2-100% metal landable, 7-32%+ landable 12 other landable bodies. I expect it to pay about 500,000-600,000CR

2nd system 12 bodies 2 landable

3rd system 10 bodies 9 landable

4th system 20 bodies 12 landable, 1 - 33+% metal

5th system 7 bodies 6 landable

Quite right, do it the fun way... :)

That said, cold / silent running is only good up to a point, you will still need speed as NPC's, just like humans, can see you when you are close enough. Frankly, I wouldn't worry too much about specifically building a cold running ship just for this, and in any case you would probably want a bit of engineering to get a ship to run really cold.

So just pack some heat sinks, get to within 10 km of the station, line up with the entry slot and then throttle up to go in. Engage silent running (optional) when you enter the no fire zone, and if you do, be ready to pop a heat sink if your temperature gets out of control. It probably won't if you are going fast enough, and as soon as you are in the station you can turn off silent running and your ship cools down again.

As I said, speed will be your friend here, system authority scans take 10 seconds, and getting into the station and out of the line of sight breaks the scan. If you try and creep in slowly, even if you are cold, you give the system authority the opportunity to 'see' you and scan.

As to what ship? Cobra Mk III. Cheap, fast, decent cargo capacity. Oh, and of course legendary... :)

No, just 5 different stations in Lawless systems. The Galmap will filter for Lawless. The difference for me was that I did the 5 trades as the opportunity arose. eg if I came across illicit cargo, I found the nearest lawless system and went there to do the deed.

So I suggested, just go sell to the BM, forget about building a ship specific for that.

That still doesn't invalidate just going in the station with cheap garbage to gain the 'contact' of the BM in your roleplay and then move to something else. You leave by the 100 - just making the minimum 5 illicit sales -, I'm not saying you have to let them scan you, I'm saying don't worry too much if you get scanned because of the ridiculous fine, but still try not to get caught. By the time you 'design' and 'build' the cool ship you had already gained access to the Dweller. I'm not saying you should rush, I'm saying, unless you are selling expensive cargo (thus the fines will be astronomic) don't mess around with building a ship. Engage silent running in whatever ship you have now and try to get through the slot as fast as you can, period.

If you are going to roleplay your character, at least make it being a smart one.

A Sidewinder is a good ship for it. All you need is speed, i.e. A-class thrusters and PD. It has the advantage that it's so small that it never gets blocked in the slot by other ships going and coming. That means that you can always fly into and out of the station at speed, so they don't get time to scan you. When I use a Sidewinder, I never even think about what cargo or passengers I'm carrying. I just fly relatively fast. If you have Felicity or Elvira unlocked, you can get the performance enhanced thrusters that make the Sidewinder really fast..

Basically, all you need to do is find a system with a black market, then fly around in supercruise and go into any USS you find, mainly the degraded ones, cause you will sometimes find illegal cargo floating around in them, pick them up and rush to the BM and sell, just be quick getting in without being scanned, but if you do, the fine is of no consequence really. Go to the next system and do the same thing. Of course, when I did it, I must of been doing something wrong because not all my drops at the Black Markets were being counted for some reason. But I kept at it and finally after 10 drops got the 5 I needed to unlock them.

Also, a trick for the one that requires trading at 50 different stations, forget which one off the top of my head, but I figured out about halfway thru that all you need to do is buy 1 item at every station you dock at, then sell it back to the station, of course it would be at a loss, so buy the cheap stuff. Its quicker than trying to figure out a trade route and hitting 50 different markets.

With 3.0.2 there are no longer any LAWLESS systems.
