Can you fulfill a planetary scan job with the scanner on your ship?

I had a scan job at a base with no suitable landing zones close enough that I could find the base once I landed. Following the opposite bearing didn't do it for me. Made me wonder... Can you fly in and use the data scanner on your ship, provided you get the nose of your ship close enough to the data point? Or is finding your target at distance, the whole point? If so, I'm guessing driving the SRV in the general direction, and hoping something shows up on the SRV scanner?

I think the data point will not extend unless an SRV is near by, so you can't scan it with your ship. Maybe hop into a smaller ship, like a Viper or Sidewinder and try to find a landing spot on a somewhat flat bump. You'd be surprised where you can fit a Viper IV on. Extremely small footprint for such a versatile ship.

I had a scan job on rocky terrain, halfway down a ravine crawling with skimmers and 2 federal vultures circling. About 10 minutes of nausea inducing slow crawling down the ravine, to get in range, I fired a single burst at one of the "wanted" skimmers. Vultures started raining death on me.

After running away through tons of rocky terrain, I was sick to my stomach (VR) and I made a rule. Any scan location that spawns in a stupid place, I'm simply not doing. Not worth the trouble.

I think you are right. I got down really close to a data point with my ship and could not scan it. Had to bail though because my trespass fine turned to a bounty. :/
