Newcomer / Intro Instant death in 3.0

Well, I know things have changed in 3.0

. First mission : a simple salvage fetch of rare art. As soon as I come out of hyperspace, open my cargo bay doors and line up on the "rare artwork", three ships attack me and immediately destroy my ship. "Under Attack" is said as my ship blows up.

Perhaps a glitch? Try again... and the same happens again.

So much for salvaging as a career...!!!

Are you in open, private or solo mode?
When I do salvage missions the NPCs normally leave you alone (if they turn up) when you have an empty cargo hold.
You just wait until they go away.

Haven't checked it out in 3.0 yet but didn't notice any mention of this change of behaviour in the release notes.

Did it say 'hostile ships may be sent against you' when you accepted the mission?

Haven't tried it yet. Have you tried changing tactics? For example, dropping in, running silent and maintaining distance, see who drops in. Personally I'd like to see some tactics involved, if I want an easy ride I'll pick up random stuff found on planets.

That was in Solo mode. And yes, there was "hostile ships may be sent against you"... but that's always the case. I've often had ships attack me after I've salvaged the goods, but never during salvage - and never so many strong ships.

nothing new, some missions ARE dangerous
especially with a higher rank

i actually missed those surprise attacks for some time now

I'm pretty sure they brought back NPC's with engineered ships in 3.0

Are you running shieldless? I have a mission runner setup for this sort of thing. I have so many heat sinks on it that I keep popping them off when they scan me. They never get a completed scan before I'm heading off into the sunset.

Salvage missions tended to be my bread and butter. I guess I'll have to try a few easy ones out with my Eagle or Cobra and see what happens. I'll admit that it was silly watching pirates show up and then leave just because I didn't have any cargo and wouldn't mind having as 777Driver suggests a bit more tactical. Quite often I'd ignore the suggested rank because they're easy... and lucrative. I play solo as well.

.

High ranked ships have always had low level engineered modules. NPC Engineered weapons left the games a while back, npc's only briefly had them. Only the new ATR ships are heavily engineered, but you need to cause chaos before they they will turn up.

Sorry to disagree with you but here is the response I got back from support when I asked for clarification:

"Deadly and Elite NPCs can have modified equipment outside of combat zones, and modifications on these ships are not limited to passive modules.

Elite NPCs will have more modified equipment then Deadly."

" ... they were disabled in response to the bug that originally occurred with them, there was not an intention to keep them permanently disabled, ... "

That was a year ago.

Hmmm....
- what combat rank are you?
- what is your ship's loadout?
- are you wanted (for whatever reason) in the salvage system?
- what's the mission's rank?

FWIW, if you take on an 'elite' ranked mission, you will have elite ranked opponents. Which is why they pay you that much for picking up some space junk.

That's kinda funny, did a little research and we are both involved in the past topics. It seems it was the Experimental effects that had been removed. Makes sense though, I was wondering why I would never see any experimental except on other Cmdr ships.

Cheers

That's the key thing, the difference between "Salvage 4 rare artwork for 400K" and "Salvage 4 rare artwork for 2.5M" is a lot more than the cash reward, always check the mission rank.

I just tried a low level "Salvage 4 commercial" for about 200k and again I was attacked before I could scoop the first container. This time I managed to escape because as soon as I saw a ship on the scanner I closed the cargo door, hit frameshift drive and barely made it out of there.

Perhaps it's now a mission for wings?

can you please list all the important parameters?

1. whats minor faction are you taking the mission from
2. whats are the BGS statuses involved
3. rank of the mission, payout
4. did your own combat rank change in the meantime?
etc...

I've had the same just happen to me. Something's changed with the NPC behaviour from 2.4 so best not to give advice based on the old information.
There was no scanning just an immediate attack. Now it could have been for a mission that was above my rank, I had at least one, so I don't have any problem - just start another new commander.

oyea I was doing a black box and I counted 4-5 reds on my scanner before I exploded. I barely finished reading he was going to pick my bones before they all attacked.

same has happened to me this past day...Im fairly new, only a month or so playing.. I have died at least 8-10 times... I have no bounties and was friendly/cordial with all but one faction, which was neutral. I dropped in to scooop up artwork (nothing in the description regarding ships being sent against me)...popped a collection limpet and 8 ships popped up and blew me out of the sky before I could even close the scoop. I had saved up 65 million and purchased the python the day before for 56 million (which took me a while to accumulated at 300-400k per mission). It cost me something like 7million to get it back...so I decided to switch back to the keelback I had...but same thing has happened over and over...so I have no money and cant seem to complete missions because of this. I did manage to escape once, but I had only collected one item...I didnt even have the 16k to repair the ship. Right now, I ended up abandoning all of the missions I had before the "patch" dropped and picked up one mission for commercial samples. I managed to pick up the 3 samples and make it back to Aubakirov orbital...so I dont know if something changed that caused changes to existing quests or not.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. I had the limpets pick up the 3 samples for the last mission, closed up the scoop and engaged the FSD. That's when I noticed NONE of the samples were in my cargo bay. I had to go back and do it a second time, which at that time the cargo did appear correctly and the mission completion announcement showed up...So I hightailed it out of there, even though no ships appeared for once.

You got ambushed, OP. Happens. Wouldn't be Elite Dangerous if nothing dangerous ever happened now, would it? ;)

Make sure you have 4 pips to shields and are plotted for an H-Jump before you drop in. Escape and evasion just takes a little practice, and these missions are a good way to practice. And when you're doing these missions (or just free scavenging) it helps to have a beefy shield...

Beefcake!

A good ship for these missions would be something like a Viper 4 with a nice heavy shield, a booster, and some chaff. And a couple of 3B limpet controllers. Practice targeting cans before you pick them up. Your limpets will only be good for a single can that way, but they have a much faster travel time, and you won't waste time retrieving non-mission crap.

Drop in, target can, pop limpet, (repeat for remaining cans), stow, jump. With some practice you'll be in and out in 15-20 seconds.

Now quit yer snivelin' and get back out there and recover some black boxes and chemical weap... ahem... "experimental chemicals" for refinery.

Vin

(P.S. Make sure to look for Degraded Threat 3 USS while you're at it... they're juicy.)
