Can we have planet exploration missions?

i mean, the new planets are absolutely stunning and the new material limits are making me stick around on surfaces longer.

with that in mind, i would love to see some exploration centric missions. nothing crazy - find (say) 10 high metal worlds, or 6 water worlds, or 3 earthlikes etc.

heck, they could even encourage us to start scanning the muddy rock planets instead of flying right past them by giving a generous payout for scanning 50 of the things.

thoughts?

Yes please. It's been 2 years of waiting for proper exploration missions. ones where we're asked to discover specific things like earth-likes or terraformable worlds and not just go and tag x number of systems.

I would imagine things like this would be saved now for the big exploration update pencilled in for the end of the year. Hopefully that will also include a wider range interesting features to find and perhaps some ability to do extra sorts of scanning and so on - at that point I'd expect to get missions to go scan features of type X at Y and so on. We'll see I guess, I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what they come up with :)

yep, or even "find x amount of crashed ships / other surface stuff". after landing on just a handful of planets since the update and being utterly blown away by them, these things definitely need some mission based attention - they're too good pass up!

yeah i have fingers crossed that this is something they'll eventually add in for beyond!

Let's wait for Beyond Chapter 4. I'm quite sure this will come with exploration overhaul then. And you will be able to suggest your ideas in the discussion threads before that.

Chapter 4 update for these things. I hope steller cartographics gets an update with a proper contact and we get missions/contracts via them instead of factions.

Yes. I would love that.

I have literally no idea how these kinds of things didnt exist from 1.0.

Seems pretty mad.

Might be they have trouble tracking things like scan types versus object types internally. We don't get much of a breakdown on the info panel and it might be there isn't much more data stored back end than that - if so there would be some re-engineering needed to get the sorts of resolution required for the sorts of scan missions we are speculating about here. That info not being there is perhaps reasonable if they were just getting things up and running initially and I suspect it has taken longer to get back to than initially anticipated. Again I wait on the Exploration update this year, I rather hope to see many new interesting things alongside a ton of mostly invisible back-end revisions necessary to support them.

GIEF! NAU!
Your mission, if you choose to accept it ( YESH PLX ) is to travel to the most dangerous system in the galaxy, survive long enough to reach planet X and then survive the planetary approach. While in close orbit, take photographs of the secret alien bases there without being detected. Watch out for occasional fire storms and electromagnetic tornadoes. You might have to navigate through sharp rocky tunnels and spires while being chased by indigenous lifeforms.

Yep, pretty crazy that this isn't in already. Ditto, 'exploration' missions to find things like a ship that's gone missing (and you can find crashed on a planet using scanning/whatever), or a rumoured ancient ruins site on a planet surface, or scouting out new canyon race locations, or finding a lost courier somewhere along a trade route, or going to find a rumoured stellar event taking place in a certain star cluster (for tourism purposes), or......

...you get the idea. There are a million things Frontier could and should be doing with missions but for some reason they're basically just the same as at release four years ago. This is only exploration missions, too! The amount of actual interesting/satisfying gameplay content that could have been added to the game by, for example, adding a proper missions instance location system.. so that combat missions don't just take place in a blank bit of space or at an asteroid belt, but at actual interesting locations like derelict stations etc. which require you to use some kind of tactics.

This is pretty much why I'd stopped playing for a while, until this update of course to check it out. It was so cool to have landable planets back when horizons dropped, but then not much to do on them at all (that I cared about). Personally I'm gagging for the ability to properly "mine" with dedicated equipment

I hope that this focus on engineers will end and the focus will be on more gameplay content on the surface of the planets and who knows on NPCs in wings.

even if they do it, they will pay like 50k credits and dont be worth doing.

Depends. Most explorers don't so things for money, that is just an added bonus. if the missions are interesting or have a visual feature they will be worth doing just for the fun of it.

most explorers don't do things for money because exploration always payed incredible bad and that was the excuse the whiteknights come up with. It changed very recently.

Yup, "finding stuff" missions is real exploration

Not "go to this place that we set up a tourist beacon"

As long as the missions would be for "first discoveries" I'd get behind this
