Are people okay with the new-look planets?

Seriously, this is the first update to ED in a very long time that I think unequivocally improved the game.

I think I’d have to agree with that. I’m still not a fan of the new module grade grind but that’s a subjective opinion and not everyone dislikes it like I do. Other than that one thing I do believe 3.0 was the most overall positive update since 2.0 for me.

Back to the planets though, I’m going to do a followup to my Search for Color thread where I’ll compare the old planets to the new planets. I was going to start it last night but I got distracted running around sightseeing on a random planet in the bubble hunting Selenium for a few hours. It was a beautiful planet comprised of many shades of grey mixed with dark blue plateaus, with lightly foggy craters and canyons.

I cried myself to sleep with a smile last night….

I play in VR, and last night was the first time I've wished my SRV came with a bucket.... I love the look of the new planets, but something has definitely changed as I got queasy after about an hour, and it took hours out of game for it to pass.

IMHO it's okay for Ship or SRV Lights to be hardly visible (if at all) in broad Daylight.

It's like shining Flashlights onto your Street under the direct sun - no light cones visible at all, which is to be expected.
Under the direct light of a very nearby large Sun? I'd be surprised for the lights to have any visible effect on the Ground.

That looks awesome to be honest. :)

Not landed on a planet yet though, but I'll no doubt need materials for my Eagle Project, so I'll be on one soon™.

(Soon being Monday... Lol)

They look stunning in my opinion. The view from Professor Palin's base is a great example of the improvements to volumetric haze and fog effects to add a true sense of distance and realism to the experience.

If you have yet to check it out, the planet that is the home to the Engineer "Lei Cheung" is A MUST SEE! -- One of the cooler planets I have driven around on. And a lot of quality materials to easily collect to boot!

My only complaint is that the dark side of planets is much too dark now. At least the ship lighting is not strong enough to adequately provide the lighting one needs to see the surface on approach.

I am totally impressed with the 3.0 improvements and looking forward to what comes in Q4. :D

Framerates have unfortunately degraded in 3.0 for VR users as well as those of us running in Native 4k. The drop in performance is likely the cause of your motion sickness problems.

Here is hoping that whatever is going on gets fixed in the next update. I have had a solid locked 60fps @ 3840x2160 for so long now, that even a drop of 5 frames is jarring to my previously butter smooth ED experience.

I've been eagerly awaiting this change since it was announced way back when. Currently out at Ceos and have landed on bunch of planets. They look great as you approach. I just love how major features like huge craters and mountainous regions stand out more with the new shaders. Makes the planets have a much more organic look and provides kind of a history. Plus it's adding variety to every system and pushes me to explore again, not just scan and cruise away before I can even get close look at a planet. I hope they keep working on this and make improvements to all the celestial bodies soon. In short, liking the new look a lot and I'm sure I'll be taking a lot more pics moving forward.

Yes, clickbait thread title. :p

What I was wondering, though, was if people (especially those using VR) have had any problems with the new planet surfaces causing nausea?

Generally, it's okay but I landed on one planet, in particular, to hunt for mat's and I found the red hue (a combination of the star type and the planet surface) to be really overwhelming and it made me feel a bit sick after half an hour or so.

It's great that the planets look so diverse but it seems like some of the effects can be a bit "fierce".

*EDIT*

Just to draw attention to the issue, in this pic' the ship lights are on, as are the SRV lights.
The red hue from the surface, and the red light from the star, totally swamped everything.
There was absolutely no white light visible at all.

With the star so close I guess it's okay if it swallows most of the white light I think. Starlight saturation has been tuned down a lot when it's further away, which I like very much. I am not entirely sure it's more realistic, but As far as I remember it even is.

I think the new planets look absolutely awesome. It's my personal highlight in 3.0. :)

Im out in the black & im landing on planets just to have a look around something i never did pre 3.0 as all the planets looked the same ish and to top it off day is day & Nights are Pitch Black

Also no more SLF canyon runs on the darkside of the planet till they replace those xmas lights with real ones ya hit the canyon walls well before you see them

The Sarge's base now looks absolutely awesome!

...although thanks to Frontier's recent changes to the 'high yield shell' effect damage stats, there might be fewer visitors to appreciate it in 3.0 :p

Was waiting there when 3.0 dropped (Messing with long range sensors !) It was already quite good with the jagged terrain being quite different from the generally softer look of places.

Edit: Actually I was at Turner's place ! Thank's for the head's up, will head over.

Finally I got some time on my hands. Just outfitted a T-7 propped it to 42 Ly, named it Mongo, plotted to Lagoon to get some distance from the Bubble. Only then I'll start landing on some planets.

The planets I did pass look great. :)

I just started a new exploration trip and I'm having a blast again! So yeah definitely loving the update

My heart nearly broke in two when I found out about the high yield nerf. One of only a couple quibbles I have with the patch, actually. Other than that, I really think Frontier knocked this one right out of the park.

Feels really good to be able to say that.

Feel great for me in VR, spent hours a few Km's from Palins base, that section of the planets is a strange green colour, was like driving through mountains, look liked moss or grass, strange but amazing to look at. Didn't feel ill at all.

You have to remember that in VR you should drive it like a real vehicle, I don't drive offroad at 70m/s (252km/h) in my 4x4, I'd either crash and kill myself, or end up feeling very sick.
