"The grind is worse!" - I disagree.

Ever since 3.0 dropped, and got past a weird HOTAS bug on Xbox... I've actually been enjoying the search for materials. Especially when done with my pals.

All that needed to change was for rewards to be guaranteed. Does not matter how big or small, but as long as each material payment is met with gains, it is worth it. It's called progression.

I love the new engineers and tech brokers. Screw me, right?

I'll admit I'm giving engineers a fair chance to see if, while I know it won't be great, and the power creep they refuse to undo is still a roadblock to it ever being so, it's at least an improvement over the wheel of misfortune we had before. So I'm gathering mats, and it's a lot easier when you don't have to stop every 5 minutes to make room in your magic massless trinkets bag. I am definitely more incentivised to go through the whole rigmarole knowing there is indeed a guaranteed reward for a discrete amount of work that I know how close I am to, as opposed to the gaping abyss of "luck."

actual progression > slot machine mechanics. even if is nothing but grind. I would rather my grind not go wasted.

Some modules are better in the new system. Some are worse IMO. I think it is more grindy because I spent the first 2 days of 3.0 collecting everything not nailed down because I only had G5 mats and data.

Before I could look to see what G5 mats I needed go get them or in my case have them. Go engineer a G5 module. Now it is I need to have 20 time more mats and data. Oh dont have that. go to a trader out of the way. Or go to the Engineer and start engineering and forget that one small mats for the G2 roll and then take off go get it or to a mat trader. Now back to the engineer. Rinse and repeat for all modules. Its tiring and a lot more crude to keep track of.

The trick is to never fall into the grind trap. If something feels like grinding, stop, because the destination is rarely better than the journey. I.e. Once you finish the grind so that you can finally "play the game", you will be faced with either nothing to do or more grind. I've found, so far, that the new patch has given me plenty of stuff to do that doesn't feel grindy. Eventually though, I'm sure that "the grind" will return, and then I shall take a break from the game.

If you have G5 mats, then you're golden.
Just go to the traders and all your tiers will be full.
I even ignore G1 mats just sitting there.
Picking them up is wasted time, lol...

20 G5 mats = 15 G5, 10 G4, 10 G3, 10 G2 and 15 G1.

Otoh, 20 G1s only get you ~3 G2s, that's it...

Trade down folks.

Trade those G5 Mats and Data for lower stuff and you are stuck with not enough of those when you get to a decent G5 level in the new system.

I had enough G5 mats and data to do an entire engineering run on a new ship with 5 rolls of each, so I didnt want to waste any of them. I went on a mat/data hoover run to get everything not nailed down for 2 days. I still had to visit material traders get needed items to get the Chieftian into the G5 range.

I like the new engineer system.. Its alot easier and you dont waist materials on 2k roles. And i havent had a problem with Materials dropping. Just got to know where to look

To fully G5 a ship, it should be a lot of bloody work.

What would be the point in having the other tiers if the ability to G5 everything is made casual to suit the maxers ?

For the people trying to G5 their entire fleet immediately, it feels like a grind now, it felt like a grind before and it will always feel like a grind in the future.

It's not rocket surgery.

Because we put in time and effort to gather stuff to build reputation to unlock G5 at the engineers.

It would be like me going to a car parts store to buy after market parts that I've been going to and giving them lots of business. I have the money (mat/data) to get a tier 5 item and them saying nope you have to buy parts 1-4 first before I can even sell you that tier 5 item. I dont know about you, but I would probably shop somewhere else.

I had the same thoughts at first but it simply doesn't work out that way because of the math.
Know what you need beforehand and visit the traders first.
Take extra, it's easy.
Grabbing a few extra G5 mats is WAY easier than searching around for a dozen others, *because* you need them anyhow.
The rates just make it favorable to do so.

I have almost all my ships (over 20) with new, maxed out G5 FSDs, PDs and DD5s.
Did that 4D boostable PD for my Exploraconda.
Have a Chieftain, with new maxed rails, PD, FSD, DD5s, life support and sensors.
The reactive armor I did G4, because the resistances look more balanced there.
Did new rails/hammers for my Vette.
I also bought a new Imp Eagle to make a racer, and it has DD5s, PD and FSD settled too, just for kicks.

My hold is still pretty full and the only lower level mats I really picked up were on the first day at Dav's, for a short while.
I did shoot some rocks yesterday, but I left a lot of G1/2 stuff just lying there.
I never have less than 100 raw G1s now.
You get 81 for 1 G5, lol!

The grind is... different. At least I can actually play the game now vs. constantly micromanaging microresources and mission reward garbage.

^^ This. I find I'm enjoying the grind more since 3.0 dropped. Better to build a tower than throw a dart and wish.

Engineers gives guaranteed results now. No more hair pulling hours wasted on bad rolls. Thumbs up, end of from me.
