Galnet audio a missed oportunity?

Ok, took me a Little while to listen through all the news.
But then?...

I though the Galnet audio was something to listen to when doing the longer SC runs?
Could they not have added some Music channel as well?

Listening to Galnet gives me the same feeling as when my car tries talking to me.

Motivates me to find the fuse box.

When I read the patch notes, I thought it was going to be music, like Inara Radio.

When I started to listening that robot voice, all I could think of are those crappy "wannabe" documentaries people put up on Youtube. Turned it off. Put my music back on instead.

Same, tried once and turned off. I had hoped it was more of an internet radio plugin that allowed community driven radio stations to be scanned through and listened to. (obv each channel cleared by fdev) so you can have playerbase house their own story driven stations, talk back stations or pure radio stations etc etc.

That would be a remarkable feature.

Even though I have the hyper jump countdown switched off, the news still pauses.

They update the news section so rarely that you are always going to be hearing the same stuff you heard two days ago. Seems to be no way to choose PLAY NEW ONLY or something like that.

I messed around with it in Beta, and hoped that some additional options would come in the release. Nope. Same bare bones features as the Beta.

Needless to say, I am not using it, and until it gets some useful filters, I never will.

Missed opportunity? Absolutely!

I foresee the tech behind this expanding to include more audio responses throughout the game, more interaction, NPC voices perhaps and things like that. I really like it actually, adds a lot to my experience, but there is only so much news to go around.

Galnet Audio Channel control would be great. Allow switching modes from in-game News, to external News, to in-game music, to personal music, to radio/streams, and reuse the same basic player controls.

For personal music, a folder location can be chosen (say in the game menu). Ability for playlists or categories for your music (such as combat, exploration etc) would be cool too to give some more control. Same thing to save some radio/streams.

Although we can simply play our music externally, it doesn't integrate or mute in sync with game events or audio feedback which I think is the biggest drawback which Galnet Audio could overcome.

I think GalNet audio is a great feature! It made me feel much more connected to the wider galaxy.

I like the idea of extending it to allow for music to play as well - maybe even curated music streams. But I don't consider it a must-have feature.

Yup. I hate those robot voices. That's why I have a hard time listening to Galnet audio as well.

Great idea, galnet radio would be awesome.

I think without breaching music copyright or having to pay for music the best alternative would be classical music, like in Frontier Elite 2 we had the choice of quite a few tunes to play when docking, hyperspace or battle.

There are many classical tracks available in the public domain.

Big missed opportunity. Provides zero immersion and does nothing to inject a sense of a living universe into this game.

It should be a galactic radio station with hours of news reports both big and small, casual banter, characters and celebrity interviews, etc. Basically an entertaining diversion while you fly the cumbersome ftl system in this game.

I also love the idea of letting the community host their own stations that we can tune into. Lots of fan fiction opportunities while taking some if the work load off of Frontier.

Yes, it would have taken a little more effort than the 5 minute plug in they used, but I guess I have higher standards than Frontier. Would have never let it ship as-is.

Adding audio was a classic case of trying to solve the wrong problem with 'moar technology'.

The real problems with Galnet are i) hardly any real content, ii) a lot of garbage content, iii) as a 'news' source it is hopelessly out of date.

Adding audio did not solve any of these problems.

I would like to see local system news read. Occasionally, there is actually something informative in local system news for bgs players.
Local system radio would be great to catch up with local developments on the way from the star to your first dock in the system.

Got to be careful with that, music generally means they need a license to broadcast it... Someone has to pay for it...

I said this ages ago. The docking computer has classical music that plays and adds some tremendous atmosphere to the whole scene when docking, which reminds me very much of 2001: A Space Oddesy. Also, brings me back to Elite 2: Frontier. I really wish they would now add at least the tracks on that docking computer (which I never equip) to play through galnet or some other classical track. I'm not talking about lady gaga, here, though. 🤣
