Point of the Viper?

Hi,

I was wondering what the point of buying a Viper is. For example, buying a Cobra makes perfect sense, it's better than the Hauler in every way possible..

However, the Viper doesn't have any real useful cargo space..
I know it's an incredibly powerful combat vessel, there's no denying that. But Combat / bounty hunting is nowhere near as profitable as trade runs.

Will this always be the case? What's the point of paying for the Viper currently, apart from just exploring / fighting?

Come meet me in game with your Cobra and I will demonstrate the point of it :D :p

Yeah, trade is a bit OP atm.. They're gonna be balancing things so each type of activity is equally viable. ;)
However, I could imagine myself pirating or bounty hunting in a Viper very effectively.

Total speculation here since its only Beta but...

The point of a Viper is a dedicated fighter-craft.

IMO in the current Beta 1.03, they intentionally Nerfed the payouts from Combat Zones because people were farming them all day. This forces us to abandon Combat Zone farming and do more trading. It is not representative of the final game (I really hope). Later-on, there will be more missions and more stuff for a combat-pilot role to fullfill.

The point is choice I guess, just like when the complete set of ships are available to buy. The beauty of the game is that there isn't one 'perfect' ship, and so you can tailor your purchases to your play-style.

This is a beta. Many significant features are not in the game or not ´´balanced´´ so that they make sense.

I'm sure bounty hunting is going to be a lot more lucrative in the future.

Trading is too profitable now, most probably to deal with the constant complaints that it was hard to make money in the previous releases. At the same time the rewards in the combat zones was significantly decreased.

However Cobra does not have a lot of chances against Viper in combat.

the viper is a wondeful fast and agile ship ...

try Pirating!
look out for traders near the navigation beacons i.e. in asselus primus, take out type6.

you can make lot of money this way, too. (focus on expensive cargo, of course)

grouping up with some collecting-mate would be nice because of limited cargo space, thats true.

Bounty hunting isn't particularly profitable at the moment. I'm sure that will change. Besides at some point you traders are going to want to hire us fighter pilots to escort your ships... hopefully :D.

The Viper is the heavy combat craft companion to the Eagle. It's purpose is to chase things down, and beat them until candy comes out.

But Combat / bounty hunting is nowhere near as profitable as trade runs.

In FE2, many missions of assassination were very well paid. 20000 cr for a politician or a corrupt businessman. Allowed to earn a very good living and have a very well equipped spaceship. For those who do not like to transport goods

Even now the Pirate Lord will net you 6000cr per mission if you can find him and kill his Anaconda. The assassinate 'Dangerous Waste Disposal' mission is somewhat less well paid (and you get a bounty on your head), but he's only in a Lakon type 9 and is an easy 3750cr (I found it in the Morgor system). It is possible to have multiples of these missions on the go at one time which nets you more money.

just exploring / fighting?

"Just"? This are 2 the main motivations in this game for me. And if you realy think that ED´s deeper meaning is to earn money just to fly the "biggest ship" someday, then you havent understand this game.

I chuckled a bit at this as I've been following another Viper thread most of the day today:

For me the trade runs will only be a means to an end; namely equipping my combat ship, be it Viper, Asp... whatever.

I think it's great that different people who want different things out of this game are getting what they want. Hats off to FD... Again.

although i made it into the anconda today (again), i will most likely switch back to the viper/lakon6 routine again as soon as i think i tested the anaconda and it's possible loadouts enough.

why? the viper is more fun to play...and the L6 more fun than the L9 (for me).
you can switch between these two without losing too much money...
