Idiotic design?! (Or, Do I really need to make ten separate cargo runs to appease this engineer?)

I speak of Broo Tarquin of course. Heri Tani was bad enough with the minimum four trips necessary, and having a 60ly jump helped mitigate that tedium. But 5 stock, with a desire for 50? Why can't I just order them to be delivered? What is this absolute hot garbage?

Every other grind makes sense. Explore far out of the bubble, then go find a meta-alloy (or buy it.) Hand in a ton of bounty vouchers. KNOW a guy. Smuggle illicit goods. These things have a payoff at least. These things aren't horrendously tedious at least. Unless I get 100000% increased Trader status, I don't see how this isn't a totally useless time sink.

Well, I want lasers. Aside from getting NINE GODDAMN FRIENDS to make this run with me, which is STUPID, any suggestions on what I could do better here?

Okay, apparently after SITTING AND WAITING, 5 more have appeared, which means I only have to make four or five stupid trips back and forth!

Yes, it’s irritating, but he’s worth it in my view (unlike Qwent) for the Grade 5 Efficient Beams. They can really help to make under-powered or over-heating ships work. As you've discovered, if you sit and wait more will eventually spawn (10 is the max though, if I recall). Just get it done in one sitting - like pulling a plaster.

No, you only have to do 5 runs.
Pick up 5 tons of tea, then wait for exactly 10 minutes and pick up 5 more. You can only have 10 at one time, otherwise no respawn.
Fly them over, rinse and repeat.
There is a spreadsheet for rare goods if you want to know more about how they respawn and how many you can have at one time until respawn stops.
Unlocked him like that today.

Or a conda having 6 beam turrerts and two PAs.
3 pips with all G5 + maxed g5 distributor = infinite turret fire.

Its an unlock requirement you need to do once, while it can be frustrating sure, it doesn't seem that bad at least in my book, since it is a one time deal, don't know how else they could do unlocking of engineers, you'd have to do 'something' yes?
that said you also only need to get one friend last I checked, to fun back and forth. But yeah, I personally don't know a better way to do it, it seems to be meant to be something 'rare' that you give them to gain access?

Well the old ranking of engineers would of been a perfect way. For example you get your first couple of engineers already unlocked. Once you ranked with them to 5 they would refer you to another. Once ranked to 5 they refer you to another and so on. No need to supply them with stupid grindy stuff. The personal reference would be enough.

You could just do it bit by bit. Whenever you are around the selling system, grab some and bring it there. Or do other stuff inbetween instead of doing it all at once.

I think the expression of your avatar says it all! [haha]

Try doing it all again for a second account! It's really fun then!

It's called working the problem OP.

Quite a lot of things in Elite need a bit of thought as to how to get around a problem. As others have said, if you're playing with a friend, it's easy to have one of you to wait outside a station (at a safe distance to avoid a dumping fine) & one vessel is used as storage while the other collects.

Spawn rates are what they are, so just deal with it. That's working/waiting for the products before you get your reward.

We've all done it, it's been like this since day 1. Some players think this game as an 'easy mode' for getting stuff & can't think their way around a problem.

STUPID?... No not really, well designed to make players work for the things they want. That's why the word 'grind' is often used by these impatient players.

Sorry to be a bit of a cynic here (it's Monday, what do you expect?), but you guys complaining seem to just want everything spoon fed to you. It take 10 trips? So what? Just get on with it and get past it.

My opinion, of course, worth as much as yours.

This is spot on

Spawn rates of rare commodities being based on system state is absolutely not something that is communicated clearly to the player ingame, unfortunately. I feel the pain.

Hopefully the codex thingy that Fdev has hinted at will work to solve this kind of issue....

But even with a boom state you're looking at making multiple trips, I'm afraid. I might complain about this myself if Engineers didn't have much bigger (balance) problems worth worrying about first. :S

It's a time gate. It's designed to waste your time, in order to mask the pathetic lack of content.

No, it's called a Time Gate, and it has zero place in a full priced game.

Be nice when this mess goes free to play, though. Rare Commodity Drop Boosters in the Store!

Or...

You can just take what you can, while you're heading that way, and not travel for no reason other than to unlock the Engineer.

No grind, just unlock in your own time.
Of course, it relies entirely on you remembering to pick them up on the way past. :D

Cheerful as ever!

Proposed Solution: Allow players to purchase additional rares at a premium price, like Power Play tokens.

First batch at normal rate, more at a higher rate. Wouldn't be exploitable for profit with diminishing returns on the added quantities.

nobody said you have to

Maybe consider reading the post? You might catch important details that way. ;)

Honestly, my brain doesn't work like that. But a decent return trip might make it not too bad.

Really I just set up a trade with EIC (kudos to the dude who pointed that out btw.) I'm happy to give bucketloads of money to people adding a way to skip grind, and add some social interaction to the game.
