Volyboom, legacy considerations and ground attack shenanigans

Ok, so the payments were getting silly but FD, circling those bases raining firey death rain on hapless skimmers was so much bloody fun, I'm still giggling the day after. Please do not remove the ability to whack skimmers with splash damage, in fact you should expand it. We could have massive fortresses to blitz from above, then land and pick through the remains in the Scarab.

Conflicts from a design perspective though, the skimmers are meant to be ground "content", that's why they were made untargetable and are disabling ships when you collide with them (Skimmer Rain, plunging down towards your firey doom, Skimmer Rain), so being able to just carpet bomb them is not quite conducive to how things are supposed to work.

Maybe some kind of target link so that a player in an SRV illuminates targets for another in a ship.

To be honest, if they made ground ships untargetable that'd be great as long as that protection extended to my srv. It's irritating being chased by ships because there's nothing I can do.

We need bombing run missions that spawn in war state systems. Make them like surface salvage missions that spawn a PoI, but once located you drop a payload rather than land and scoop.

I always get a good chuckle when FDev curtail fun like this, simply because it wasn’t the type of fun they wanted us to have.

So much for “Play your way” I guess...

Hell yes. Adapt cargo scoop UI for bomb bay doors too plz

Can we please make this a real thing?

That's the point, it's a better way to use skimmers.

I would love to do missile and strafing runs on ground targets, are you kidding me?
Fixed multicannons?
Oh yes.
That stuff is a staple of flight related combat games.

How things are "supposed to work" is the problem.

lol imagine that in real life.

HAHA Mr all high and mighty president / dictator, your missiles and aircraft weapons are ineffective against our cities because it's ground content only! GROUND CONTENT ONLY! You're a moron if you think air to ground weapons will do any damage.

So if you want to blow up buildings, tanks and other GROUND CONTENT, you have to send in the tanks, and then we'll wipe you out before you get close. Air supremacy is so last millennium. GET WITH IT.. sir!!!

k thx bye.

Yeah it's just a little bit silly :p

My thoughts are the same. Ground content what a joke.

A-10 pilot sir I've spotted the tanks. Command Center Alright good work pilot now jump out of your multimillion-dollar death machine and commence a ground assault on said tanks. A-10 pilot that doesn't make much sense to me. Command Center that's a direct order Soldier don't you know that's ground content move out!

Said the same thing on another thread yesterday...

FDev need to get hold of a copy of "G-Police", play it for a couple of weeks to get an idea of what it's all about, and then put it all into surface missions in ED.

Basically, the entire thing only involves a handful of simple mechanics:-
1) Follow waypoints.
2) Follow a mission-critical asset.
3) Scan things.
4) Destroy enemies.
5) Protect friendlies.

Surely it can't be that hard to implement similar things in ED?

Course, a solid first step would be to have some NPCs just randomly trundling around in SRVs, eh?

The money exploit aside, I too would like to see this come back.
I remember doing missile strafe runs way back before they nerfed it the first time. Not challenging, but still a lot of fun. :)

If they want to make it challenging, then add more air defenses to the bases.
and if they really want to "force" the ground-content aspect, they could always make exploded skimmers drop a 'skimmer core' that you'd have to collect with the SRV as proof for the mission giver, that you actually killed them.

I loved the way the skimmers popped when they got hit. The graphics and sounds effect were great. Like you I chuckle every time I remember it.

It would seem to be a simple matter to design missions that lend themselves to certain builds/ships too, even with existing assets.
This would promote progression through the shipyard.

I want to see an Apocalypse Now scenario with Federal Dropships, Gunships and Assault ships all swooping down on a huge complex to Ride of the Valkyries. Drop ships to deploy SRVs, Assault ships to dominate the airspace and Gunships providing overwatch.......and we can fly any role. Could be good!

against huge sprawling complexes, with AA guns, SAM missile batteries, and several dozen skimmers. Some covered and semi-interior areas that require a tactical incursion of SRV's to take them out. The rest of the skimmers can be bombarded from the air, so long as you can hold up to the ground-to-air assault.
...oh, and a fully turreted conda or two defending the base as well. Not really for defensive efficiency, but more for the light show and sound effects.

...have i gone overboard? :p
