1) Yup, the Lynch movie is an abomination.
2) Yup, miniseries was awesome.
3) Eh... maybe. Could still be enjoyable if they are judicious in what they want to film. Make a movie heavily inspired by the book but more streamlined.
This is very exciting news.
I've been waiting for a great Dune movie since forever (sorry Mr. Lynch, I love much of your work but Dune deserves better).
The fact it will be directed by Villeneuve is a cherry on top, love the Blade Runner remake.
But like others have said, a single movie, even if long, is not enough to cover the story and do it justice.

But visually its a stunning film. This scene always gives me goosebumps.
I really love the art direction of the Lynch film. The grand Gothic decadence of it all is wonderful.

I *kinda* agree. I mean, sure, it's pretty stunning. However, it's just really 'out there'.
I'll never forgive him for all his insane Lynch-isms like a pustule-faced Baron Harkonnen or heart plugs or cat milking or those insane slug Guild Navigators. I mean really.... lol.
Sting in plastic underwear I'll forgive just because it's hilarious, but the rest....

There are plenty of movies that are terrible in their own right. But I also judge a movie on the potential of its source.Oh do be serious - Plan 9 from Outer Space anybody?

I'm a huge fan of Frank Herbert's work and I'm really looking forward to this.
To be honest though the best Dune novels IMHO are the preludes by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson.
Especially the 'Legends of Dune' series describing the Butlerian Jihad and the orgins of the Atreides / Harkonnen feud are works of art.

Ooh shiny, I didn't realise a new Dune movie was in the offing. As long as it doesn't have Sting "Bloody" Sting in it, I'm all over it. I loved the Dune books, I re-read them last year for the first time in 20 years and enjoyed them as much (if not more) as the first time I went through them back in the day.
Now, if someone would kindly make a 27 hour film based on Gene Wolfe's Urth of the New Sun, I can die a happy man.

I've read only the Frank Herbert series up to and including Chapterhouse Dune (and read them all a couple of times).
I have never read any of the "ghost-written" post-Frank Herbert Dune books.
Legends of Dune sounds interesting..........
I have mixed feelings about the non-Frank books. They are kind of ok as stories go, but i don't like where they went in the end with the reveal about Daniel and Marty... i don't think that is what Frank had in mind.
After seeing "The dark tower" I see little hope. Look how long it took to get the LOTR right. I put the dark tower series way ahead of the dune series. We will see.
Ah - right - so they are your three "Most Disappointing" movies - fair enough.
I still look on it as a "Parson's Egg" - some bits are risible, some bits are OK and a few are fine. However I know my tastes are very divergent from others, for example I like the Deckard "voiceover" in the original Blade Runner release (fan of old Film Noir) so the internal exposition in Dune doesn't grate with me as much as Sting's abysmal presence.
