Why was the dump materials function removed?

With the latest upgrade, we can no longer dump materials.

I don't want to go to a mats trader after every mining trip. I also don't want to ignore materials without a decent interface that shows just what materials are being ignored.

I guess it’s becuase materials aren’t being stored to the detriment of others, hence no reason to dump them as no additional space is gained. (Although I’m not too familiar with 3.0 yet so may be wrong)

Because there is no longer any use for it. Storage is on a per-material basis, so dumping iron only makes room for more iron.
Yet no auto-ignore function. I'm not ignoring materials, when the only way to unignore them is to select an invisible material.
Also, I don't get to see the "materials full" message, since the info bar only ever shows "Refinery Full" when I'm mining.

That auto ignore while capacity for certain material is full would be a great idea to pitch to fd. Or an ignore list actually make it easier to unignore

It seems a premature removal to me. I say reinstate it, it's not in the way or causing problems. If after six months they see that no-one is using it then I could see a case, however there already appears to be players who still find it a useful feature.

I don't think I fully understand the issue. How would the ability to dump materials resolve the problem you're experiencing?

I'm trying to determine the material composition of a planetary ring. Since FD haven't had the decency to do this the way they did with planet surfaces.

With the ability to dump mats, I can determine the percentage of the ring from the log file. Without this ability, it can't be done from the logs, since the ignored mats aren't recorded there.

If a limpet brings you a material you are maxed out on, it becomes blocked until that material expires.

Ignoring the material does not make the limpet drop it and you'll have to remember to unignore it in the future. (and you can only do so if the material is physically present)

Not to mention frequently using the ignore function in a mining environment (tons of moving contacts - the list will keep shuffling) is extremely cumbersome.

Just making a bit of room used to be an easier solution.

Theyre not invisible theyre just greyed out in contacts tab. Disable the collection of that item till you have space again.

They are removed from the scanner and to the bottom of a long, shuffling contacts list. Might as well be invisible.

You can still dump materials. I was doing it earlier in the week when I was mining. When you dump some of a maxed out material, the limpet will then drop off its cargo. But yeah, an auto-ignore feature would make a lot of sense and a lot less faff than the current manual ignore system.

Before they released 3.0.02 and removed that button, I guess?

This is certainly not ideal for mining if you want to unignore later, since you have to wait until one happens to be around. If you could ignore/unignore from the materials panel in the right tab, that would be okay. If limpets automatically ignored materials you didn't have space for (in the same way that they autoignore all fragments if you don't have a refinery fitted) that would work too. Or they could just put the discard button back...

Unignore works fine from the contacts tab in my experience.

Or am I missing something here?

If a material or fragment isn't in your contacts tab you can't ignore it. So if you are about to head out and you remember that you previously ignored something then bad luck you need to wait until you find one - and then remember to pay attention to it in amongst all the other materials and limpets flying about - to unignore it.

Plus as mentioned by YinYin the contacts list reorders itself quite often and it can be hard to select a specific thing.

Mining was supposed to be "improved" by this patch. If limpets are blocked because they are carrying an unignored material that you can't jettison, the only way to unblock them would be to destruct all the controller's limpets - which in practice means all active limpets since you would have to guess which limpet is managed by which controller - so things are actually worse than before. At least you could shuffle around the refinery or materials tab dumping stuff to make room for more of the same.
