Excited new Player now- finally got going in VR!

Hi all,

I originally posted the below over on the newcomer forum, and was directed to post here for best help. I would note all this happened last week, so it is not related to the Oculus Rift issue all are having as of today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am about at the end of my rope.

New forum user here, I am about at my wits end with this game and thought I might post for some feedback before giving up and uninstalling.
I recently purchased E.D. on the recent sale at Oculus. Obviously I am wanting to play this game in VR with my Rift.

I can never get it to run properly. First off the menu is all messed up, trying to point and click the proper items with the mouse is very frustrating. The default resolution is low, like 1024x760 or something. I go in to change it to my monitor's resolution of 1920x1080 and it will change it, but then after exiting and going back in to the game it is once again stuck at the lower resolution.

Also, oftentimes when I start the game it is just stuck on the loading screen and nothing comes up. Sometimes if I alt-tab out and back in, then I will be at the menu screen. Very frustrating as this happens frequently. Have not even been able to get in and set up my HOTAS controls yet.

Lastly, after going into E.D. and then exiting, my monitor configuration is all screwed up. It is like it adds an extra display device and re-orients them. I have two monitors, in extended mode. After starting ED and then exiting, in Windows I will show three display devices. I have to close Oculus Home and restart it, and then manually re-configure my two display orientation to get my monitors back to normal.
This is the first VR game I have ever had that did such a thing, and frankly all of this has me pulling my hair out.

So before completely giving up, I wanted to post and see if there is something simple I am missing here?
I do have E.D. installed on a separate SSD than where Windows is installed.

Thanks in advance for any tips,

You have 2 monitors + rift = 3 ?
Is one of your monitors conected to onboard GPU ? If yes unplug it and if possible plug it do dedicated GPU and turn off onboard GPU in BIOS (I had this problem but I use pimax VR so cant say if it will help you).

Stick with it dude, it will work. I've been using 2x HD monitors and oculus cv1 for ages (on a nvidia 970 and now a 1080).
All three are plugged into my nvidia (I use a DP adaptor in one of the HDMI-out ports for the rift, a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor for my small HD screen on my chair, and a normal HDMI-out port for my main HD monitor). Works fine. The only procedure I have to follow on pc 'boot-up' is to not turn my small HD monitor on (yet) else pc will use the small HD monitor as the 'main screen'. Pc boots up using main HD screen and when windows (7) is loaded up - I switch my small screen on. Works every time.

In relation to your resolution settings and the difficulty in point-and-clicking' in the menu - it sounds like when you change the resolution the settings are not being saved or (possibly) if your Rift connection drops on next ED bootup ED will revert to default display settings? (hence the reversion?). If you get your headset centered up then menu navigation is fairly straightforward.

Hope you get sorted - you wont regret it. It can take a bit of faffing about to set it up but once done you are good to go. Try what matemaster and I suggest.

I would simplify, for troubleshooting, and yes windows is HORRIBLE at handling any change to screen devices, just the order of how the HDMI\DP handshakes arrive is enough to reset everything.

This is a windows issue, been around since XP.

Sadly mouse pointer navigation in VR is horrible, it might even be you haven't enabled the 3d mouse either, it should be in graphics options.

For trouble shooting, I would disconnect the second monitor entirely while getting the Rift to work, and test the waters with some other games than a heavy hitter like Elite or Project cars.

Thanks guys, I will keep trying.

My setup works great for other sims, I fly both DCS and IL-2 in VR with no problem whatsoever - VR setup in both of those was very quick and painless. DCS I have been running in VR for over a year now, IL-2 since they released VR support about 9-10 months ago.

My two monitors are plugged into my 1080 Ti via display port, the Rift is plugged into the 1080 Ti via HDMI. The two monitors are run in extended mode.
The only game I have seen this problem in, with a third monitor being added, was with this one. After running this game and then exiting, my dual monitor configuration is all messed up, and when viewing in Windows display settings, it shows three monitors.
And my configuration changes for display in ED I am sure are not saving at all.

Ok now for some reason it seems to be working. I am able to get into the game no problem, and upon exiting it is no longer screwing around with my dual monitor setup orientation. Not really sure why it is now ok and not doing that, as I did not really do anything different. But it is now working as expected.

It still though will not let me set my resolution to match my monitor's native resolution of 1920x1080, that is ok though at the lower default resolution having no trouble making selection and clicking with the mouse. Even got some of my axis' set and started the first training mission. Flew into a big boulder though lol.

Now just go to figure out what all to assign to my HOTAS setup and where.
I am running a Virpil T-50 stick setup ( center mounted with extensions), Warthog Throttle , CH Throttle Quadrant ( for some extra axis and buttons), and MFG Crosswind rudder pedals.

Thanks for the help gang,

Well I made it through the very first training mission.

Still need to get all my needed controls set up.
Speaking of which, is there a re-center VR view command or anything like that? I had a look through a lot of the control options and so far have not seen anything like that Seems like I an starting out sitting pretty low in the cockpit.

It is still messing up my display situation somewhat though, by adding a third display and changing the orientation. Have to close Oculus Home and re-orient my two displays to get it back how I had it. Only VR game I have seen do this.

There's a reset HMD orientation keybind that you can setup, it's somewhere in the control settings is all I can say... Other than that you can always press the oculus button on your touch controller and use the reset view in app option.

Much thanks, will give that a try!
I have never seen a game have so many different options in the setup menu lol.

Found the reset HMD orientation and assigned to a button - much better thanks again!

Well I seem to have got the monitor orientation behaving now, at least it is not messing it up any longer. I just had to go into display settings in windows and adjust the primary monitor back parallel with the secondary and all seems to be well on that end.

However, nothing I have tried can get me changing the resolution to match my monitor's native of 1920x1080 to stick. After saving and exiting the game, upon launching it again it always reverts back to 1280x760 or thereabouts. Tried setting it as full screen, and tried setting it as windowed. Always reverts back on the next start of the game. No biggie I guess.

Hi @dburne

great that you are also here, don't waste too munch time for Elite :) IL 2 BoX is much better optimized for VR and 3.001 is coming soon. Good luck with Sidewinder you will need it :)

Lol, no worries there IL-2 will always be my mainstay. I do occasionally enjoy some other adventures as well and I am thinking I might like this one fairly well. If I can ever come to grips with all the control setup I need to do.
Main thing I need to get my arms wrapped around now is what commands I should assign to what buttons.

there is no way to get permament full hd window at start screen in your monitor while you are in VR mode.

Ok then it is not just something on my end, thanks for the info.

So I have a couple of axis assignments - throttle and thrust.
What is the main difference?

Edited original thread title to reflect where I am now.

Hey could some kind soul clue me in on how to select the contact tab on the left hand panel?
I use the up down left and right arrow keys to navigate the selections, but can't figure out how to select the contact tab so I can request docking. I am in the second training mission and need to learn how to dock.

Thanks for any tips,

Thanks for any tips,

Seperate keybinds for navigating between tabs.
Tab right, tab left I believe .

For default keyboard where WASD navigates in the menu itself. Q & E moves between tabs.
You can double bind these as well. so if you use similar buttons in flight for say targeting, fire groups or energy management so that if you open a menu those key could then work as menu navigation instead.
Close the menu and back to normal.

For instance left right energy hat becomes tab left and right.
My fire group buttons and sensor zoom hat becomes general menu navigation.

Thanks, will have a look next time I fire it up.
