FDL horrid cockpit

All these people who can't deal with the FdL's off-centre cockpit must find it very frustrating to not be able to drive a car.

Assuming they're not all millionaires who restrict themselves to driving a McLaren F1, of course.

Nonsense.

In the minivan, I just sort of straddle the center console motorcycle style so that my face is just above the radio. From this central location of power, I shout orders to the driver.

Although I have not flown an F-D-L I do not have an issue with offset cockpits. I have a Cobra MkIII that I use without any problems (well, getting used to left hand drive took a bit of time).

I think I'm the only one who likes the off-centre'dness of the FdL cockpit. You soon get used to it, and the FdL is such an efficient killing machine it could have a cockpit made from turds and I could still forgive it.

I wonder, give the propensity of Fdev combat mechanics to favour WW2 dogfighting, if the FdL cockpit layout isn't merely a nod to the FW109/BF109, which both had offset gunsights to the right of the pilot to account for dominant-eye aiming, much like holographic gunsights on modern personal firearms?

Pilot's positioning to FDL is a nod to yachts design, and nothing else.
But, for some ungodly reason, it was combined with rudimentary canopy from some ww2 contour fighter, and the one which was clearly made for centerline placed pilot at that.

For me, flying this ship is plain repulsive. Yes, this is the issue on my part, yet, it cannot be called a good designed cockpit if a lot of people suffer strong discomfort from it. And I belive something have to be done about that. Either alternative cockpit or alternative ship should be added to the game.

I love the FDL cockpit, it makes me feel like I'm piloting a sleek behemoth of death and destruction.... and that long raked nose that you can sense out the window... ah.

Not hating on the OP, just wanted to chime in that there are those of us who don't have an issue. :)

Yes, of course I know that not all people suffer flying this ship. The issue is that a lot of people do, and the fact that this ship have no alternatives while some people simply unable to fly it.

Ye it looks as if on test run the dev flew it through a farmers picket fence and they couldn't easily cut it away. So...well...it stayed, and why not, it looks like the piece of pizza he was
distracted with during the event anyways P

They have been very nourishing however to thy conda over the years especially now when their carcass (mats) are even tastier

Not quite sure why people are 'suffering' from flying a ship with an offset seat.

Is it motion sickness, or what?

Please read OP. Its not the issue with an offset ship. I love flying Cobra and Python.
Its the issue with this particular cockpit of all vehicles I've ever been inside of.

It's similar to driving a car, and feels quite natural to me. With such a large multi seat vehicle, it would be frankly odd if the pilot was in the centre as you're really on a bridge, not inside a cockpit.

Offset by itself is not the issue. Offset coupled with canopy which is somewhat made for centerline placed pilot is.

Not entirely disimilar to a car, but I understand the sensation. There's probably several factors at play which make flying it unbearable for certain players. Sidebars are actually an issue for vehicles too, especially with newer cars imo with their very curved roofs and windshields.

I am feeling that this cockpit is made as a balancing factor to this ship.

I've flown FDL for 2 days and I like its hardpoints, the fact that it is the only medium shield tank ship (Python is not a medium ship), the speed, the flying style.

But...

This cockpit is wrong on so many levels. Flying this ship makes me feel like I've suffered Joker's pencil trick not a while ago (it's not lethal, google it).

Jokes aside, I've might have come up with an explanation of why this ship is cockpit-locked for some people.
My lead eye is the left one, and because of that, my right eye moves according to it. Left eye doesn't meet any obstacles in its field of view, but right one gets blocked by this right beam too much, thus causing subliminal discomfort. I'm no expert though.

I couldn't even figure if fight vector is parallel to the forward view.
This becomes even worse with any FoV setting other than the default, as canopy beams structure highlights unnatural view cone very clearly.
I really couldn't get used to it. All I've achieved by trying to is worsened right eye sight for a couple of days.

Of all vehicles I've ever been inside of, this ship's cockpit is first for me to cause such issues. I have no problems flying Python, Clipper, Cutter, Cobra and even Adder.

And I've read about many more CMDRs describing similar impressions. I'm not trying to dramatize anything, but if you feel that best PvP ship in the game being literally unusable by a lot of people is not a big deal, I do not agree.

Also, I might add that when I flip screenshot with cockpit horizontally, it stills looks weird but does not cause any uncomfortable sensations.

Either alternative cockpit layouts or alternative to FDL copycat spinoff Alliance ship same as Chieftain for FAS should be added to the game.

It's great in VR :)

I don't know what it is. But looking out of the FDL front window feels like looking at a M C Escher picture for me.

Although, I have to say, the feeling goes away rather quickly when flying as I get used to it and the mind starts to ignore the cockpit.

I don't experience the same issue. As stated prior, very similar to driving cars/trucks, flying aircraft, or operating boats with a wheel house IRL.

"subliminal discomfort"... lol. That's a good one I will have to remember.
Wife: "Can you take out the trash?"
Me: "I don't think so. I believe I am experiencing subliminal discomfort, but it's subliminal so I cannot be certain. Best to play it safe."
