The Chieftain explorer does it work?

Great video! I plan on on using the Chieftain as an exploration vessel myself — honestly if for no other reason than the cockpit view and handling. The jump range honestly doesn’t bother me. Good luck out there! Have fun!

To be honest, almost anything works as an explorer ship. Whether it's better than average is often the question, and the answer for the Chieftain is: not really. Average jump range, average supercruise handling (see here), decent max fuel scoop / FSD class ratio, slightly above average forward speed, good handling in normal flight.
The chief problem is the number of internal slots: in essence, it means "SRV bay, Shields, AFM: choose two of three".

Mind you, it has always been said that it was designed as a combat ship, so it's little wonder that other explorer and multi-role ships outperform it in this career. That said, it's more workable than some other combat ships.

"Felicity and her mean spirited friends" ... LOL, sounds about right. :)

EDIT: I agree. I was really hoping for more flexibility in this ship. I love the look of it, but I just won't have a lot of use for it. Unexpectedly, 3.0 made the T7 a lot more interesting, and I've been starting to use that.

I am struggling to love the chieftain as an exploration ship. I really want to but the lack of internals is a serious handicap here for me. No AFMU or cargo space and 3 wasted military internals is a killer. I am using it now more as a short-range exploration vessel rather than a long-haul one. Shame, though, as it looks great.

i WOuld think its 2 or three forced military compartments cripples the vessle as an explorationship. From my point of view the jump range is the least of your problems if you want to turn this into an explorationship, the biggest problems is the lack of internals due to the forced military compartments.

The ship was advertized as a combat ship to face the Thargoid Threat so this should not come as a surprise.

yes true, but what im struggling with is this question

Does limiting a ships capability this far, (rather than just on its average jump range and poor landing choices which would make it a poorer choice than other exploration craft in any case) add any value to the game?

it is a combat ship but im all for freedom of Choice, after all a corvette can fit everything in it with a respectable 34ly range (Think of the first non engineered ASPx range CMDRs!) so being a combat ship shouldn't be a barrier, equally the type 10 is a fine explorer yet is a ship to combat thargoids

of course its all my opinion :)

they are mean! but not as mean as the tech broker is going to be for FSD booster (prediction of course)

Not for me personally. It's a combat ship not an exploration ship. Whatever floats your boat though Cmdr.
Good video. What's this FSD booster I'm hearing about?

Can you explore in a Chieftain? Sure, you can explore in a Sidewinder if you want to. Now, is the Chieftain a good exploration ship? Not for me, it has an average jump range and too few internals to do what I need it to.

That said though I am loving it for combat flying. Don't think I'll be using my Vulture anytime soon again, lol.

some potential Guardian tech module that will be available soon*** what it does is still unknown but you can guarantee it will require some obscure materials and a partridge in a pear tree to get one!
