came back after a year away and !

Apocalypse Now such a good movie, the amount of times I've watched the village attack when they play Ride Of The Valkyries...

It's one of my favourite movies, but the Redux version, as it was originally meant to be.

And the book it parallels is also one of my favourite books, from one of my favourite authors.

CCR are also one of my favourite bands, and I love all the music from that era. Jimi Hendrix is one of my idols.

I'm of course way too young for all this stuff, but hey I can't help what I like. :D

I've got an idea for you explorers.... hear me out.

Own Two Ships

No really. Do it like this.

1)Make one of them your paper-thin, uber jump-range exploration ship. This is the one you use to go out exploring in.

2)Make the other one a tanky little transport... a Viper IV, Asp, or DBX with a nice heavy shield, some boosters, a little chaff, maybe an SCB.

3)Park the second ship on the edge of the bubble. Last starport with a shipyard that you can get your hands on.

4)Go exploring. Jump and honk until you're blue in the face.

5)Return to the first ship, transfer to it.

6)Use tanky protecty ship to transport you wherever you need to go to sell your precious data.

That's my idea. What do you think?

Sounds way too much like common sense when you can lose all your data and come crying on the forums that the NPC's are too hard or you got ganked by a ninety-billion DPS Fer-de-Lance with a 24A* Dual Prismatic shield that was doing 2000m/s circle strafes around you.

Or maybe I'm just too much of a cynic. :)

A tanky DBX could be used to visit the Guardian sites, no paper thin niche explorer required. I used to get 50 LY range out of my combat DBX before I sold it to buy the Chieftain. :)

Same :)

Even pre-3.0 I think my DBX tank pushes 45 Ly

Why not jump even into a pvp outfitted FDL/FAS and sell the data anywhwere you want.

Rep'ed b/c I also got killed after returning from guardian sites. I didn't get ganked but was killed by Capital One in Sol so I concur with OP that we should not loose cartographic when our ship is destroyed. If we get to keep data/materials in inventory why not cartographic too?

In all, I think there's a lesson here folks.

Who in their right mind would consider looking at ruins (or anything else for that matter) before cashing in valuable data, especially in open?

For those who harp on about not losing exploration data when destroyed, there needs to be risk, otherwise why bother playing?

OP, unfortunately you took a risk in open and got burned. ED and risk is how it's supposed to be. Without it, what's the point? :)

i thought i would play some elite again to play the new chapter 1 stuff.
spent last night learning about the guardians and exploring (my fav part )
logged in today and spawned next to one of the guardian ruins on the ground inside my cobra.
5 secs later a cmdr in their anaconda started shooting me and blew me up along with my 5 million or so worth of map data while i was still parked

I've played games a long time, i know what to expect from players so im not really peed off at the cmdr but i think FD should give us an option to protect the map data that us explorers spend most of our time collecting.

After a year? You might not know this... the name of the CMDR who blew you up is in "history" tab; if you block that CMDR you're unlikely to be instanced with them again.

(And before I get told I'm recommending a "broken" game mechanic... these are all in-game features provided purposefully by FD, and I know of no reason to think they don't work).

You can fly to the far side of the galaxy and receive Galnet news, by this logic you could transmit your hard earned exploration data home and back it up. You can tele presence anywhere in the galaxy instantly, you can clearly transmit large amounts of data in realtime FTL.

Materials transfer between ships when you die!

Logical bloody consistency please FDev.

Sorry for your loss. Such an option already exists though, it's called Solo and Private Group.

Several points here .....

He only logged in briefly and was ganked ..... kind of harsh to blame him, how could he know this was going to happen?

The loss of data in the game is unacceptable .... we can keep materials and scanned data collected here and there, so why not exploration data? The risk of losing data placed upon explorers is too harsh - this can involve many weeks, months of game play.

Playing in Open is not an invitation to combat with someone unwillingly.

Also make rebuy free, let us keep our cargo and missions and make our ships invulnerable. Apart from the hyperbole, no, I prefer to have consequences.

I don't PvP and I almost exclusively play Open.

Yes, but you probably wouldn't complain or create a thread about it or ask FDEV that you want to keep your data. You would probably just shrug it off and remember that it was you who clicked on open. While I do agree that Open isn't only for people who want to PvP I also agree that everyone playing in Open must be prepared to engage in PvP.

The one reason that I always play in group mode.

Personally, I think that Open mode is for pewpewers, but Iv outgrown that style of gameplay now.

The game is a lot more than being a cowardly low-life, waiting for someone to spawn at a location, then blowing them away before they can react.

Then these low-life's whinge when hardly anyone wants to play in open mode any more.....reap what you sow low-lifes!

Well it is really because it's the only thing you really need to be in Open for and that bgs stuff. If you have no interest in either of those two why would you bother.
Wings, multicrew, SRV racing, expeditions, etc?
I enjoy encountering other Commanders. Sharing small talk, sometimes striking up proper conversations, sometimes agreeing to work together on something. There is a social aspect to it. I also like the risk and the tension.
