Depends on what you´re doing. Never needed to recharge them (exploration). Might be different in PvE or PvP.

AFMU has it's own ammo that is restocked by synthesis or at a station. Repair limpets are needed for some repairs that the AFMU can't do (canopy, I think? I've never used them). You can create limpets via synthesis too, though, so no need to take extra weight (just need a small cargo bay and a repair limpet controller).

Depends on the size. I have needed an AFMU recharge making a 6400 Ly trip neutron and white dwarf hopping all the way there and all the way back.
The wear and tear on ships systems was a good bit more than my small AFMU could take, but that's what synthesis is good for when it comes to things like this.
