What happened to all the griefers and gankers?

So fed up of getting blown away while just minding my own business so I decided to do a reverse grief.

I brought a stock Sidewinder, out fitted it with an FSD and better thrusters and went looking for griefers. I did not have to wait long, got interdicted buy an FDL, part of a 3 wing the other ships being a cutter and a clipper. Well got killed instantly.

What was the point of that?

According to the new crime and punishment rules a powerful ship that kills a clean inferior ship- Sidewinder being the smallest will get hit with a huge bounty.

My rebuy was half thanks to the new notoriety system.

Went straight out again and looked for the gang.

Interdicted the FDL, he did not want to engage me and kept running.

I kept interdicting him, rammed him and died.

Kept doing this to him and his mates, imagine the scene of an Elite status Cutter fleeing from a stock Sidewinder.

Kept it up for hours, some other players winged up with me and in the end the gang gave up coming to the system. Haven't had so much fun in ages.

After a while kept getting message that they 'deactivated datalinks' would that make a difference?

Really got to them, they started messaging me but I could not read any of it, as it was blocked out for some reason, one word came through which was 'pidor' According to google its an insult in Russian, I just messaged back 'lol'.

Griefers don't like being griefed it seems.

There I was spending hours and hours grinding for a ship then grinding for all the engineering resources while all I needed for revenge was almost a stock Sidewinder, don't know how I feel about that to tell truth.

What a brilliant idea...

Except he forgot the 'SDC takes a flexible stance on combat logging when they do it, plus were caught cheating and like to dumbfire into explorer or beginner hotspots' part. ;)

I'm not SDC but if you're going to make such a claim you damn sure better have some sort of evidence to back this up. Never seen any of the members I know cheat, proof or it didn't happen.

So basically you're saying that traders might aswell stop playing in Open. Yes?

This is me doing just about everything wrong because I wanted to see how long I would last.

From the first shot to my death it was a minute and fifteen seconds. If I would have just highwaked I would have survived no problem.

Type 7 with a size 5 shield and all the rest full cargo racks. It was engineered, but 2.4 style, so not all that great.

Background talking is because I was watching a twitch stream at the same time.

Stock Sidewinder has always been the most powerful ship in ED. With zero rebuy, you can’t lose.
Now you get the bounty bonus as well. The king of ships has become even more mighty. :D

I need to get back to it - problem is whenever I have a chance I'm always playing and having fun. I'll clean it up and post an update.
(Oh, I thought you were talking about... nevermind. Anyway, the PvP community already has an Anarchy hub where they play pitched combat games. San Tu. I think there are others, too that a lot of scrubs and wannabes hang out at ) :p

And when did I ever say that about traders? I trade in open all the time, as do others, and my trading ships are plenty strong enough to survive your standard PvP encounter.

Does that mean that any of them are going to survive a top-tier full-wing gank? No. But the chances of running into that are extremely unlikely outside of hotspots. And even in hotspots you still have a good chance of surviving if you fly like you know what you're doing.

Vin

That's interesting. Could you please share some of your trader builds with us. I'd love to know what I should be using.

Great example.

Actually, you dont. You can just block people. Which ironically is something the same people who like to claim 'you can do everything as long as it is within the rules' then go berserk about. Its that weird "its Open, I can be as big a bunghole as I want! But you all have to be nice about it, and dont block me because that is mean and exploiting a game function!" double-think. I agree with your general point, dont get me wrong, but when SDC is part of the discussion one should provide a bit of context before bringing the 'its open, just follow the rules and do as you please!' mantra. :)

Blocking people does not remove this game mechanic. It is exactly the same as PG (by design you can PvP in Mobius).

The only one claiming things here is you btw. Double-think twice ;)

I really enjoyed the video, good stuff. I do most of that, but need to improve my identification of systems for high-wake, so it was good to get a solid reminder. My thanks for that.

Unfortunately, I think I've got what appears to be a better understanding of the griefing. Does this definition sound about right "show a lack of emotion, especially the social emotions, such as shame, guilt, and embarrassment".

That's from a summary definition for something that apparently affects 1-5% in the USA. I'll leave it at that.

Lol, it was a huge thing with the 5:1 punishment, and openly discussed on reddit. Dont get me wrong, it wasnt just SDC, it was the vast majority of PvP groups that used it. They then complained about having their modules taken from them, and said that cheating was okay to stay competitive, because others also cheated. Its not even a secret or anything man. Heck, those people (for example besieger) dont even deny it here, they just argue FD should have stopped them sooner.

Apparently we have not been clear enough that Open is the SDC private group, full-stop.

Thank you for understanding.

Nah, they are actually far more relevant on the forums than in-game. As Vin said, anyone who knows the basics is gank-immune, so all this talk is more about principles (or lack thereof) than actual in-game major problems. IMHO of course.

I really hope i am not too hyperbolic or generalizing though.

Its a video game, none of the above applies.

As for the video, the new engineers 3.0 will give you even more power since all the current stats now are evequivalent to what was considered to be god mods in 2.4.

I'm glad that you found the video useful. A lot of people have, icluding me.

As for the latter part, there are myriad reasons why people do what they do. I don't think applying blanket pixel psychology is going to provide you with the relief you're looking for.

Best to just focus on your own survival skills, that way when you do get got, you can say "Doh! They got me that time, boys! :D ", rather than "Aw shucks, they get me every time :( "

Farseer... G1 Plant, G3 Dirty Drives
Dweller... G5 Power Distributor (Charge Enhanced)
Cheung... G5 Shields (Thermal Resist), G3 Boosters (Resistance Augmented)

Outside of armor mods those engineers should give you everything you need harden your ship against most attacks. The progression gives defensive players an early advantage (and doesn't even require combat).... almost as if it were designed that way

For G5 armor you will need to unlock Blaster and Selene.

(And between Dweller and Blaster, you get access to perfectly good offensive mods as well).
