An interesting (if old) article regarding the mindset of a "griefer"

sorry i dont understand

Perhaps a couple of quotes will help.

"An "armchair psychiatrist" is a person whom is not trained in, or has no background knowledge of psychiatry, but will still continue to give advice concerning, and often attempt to diagnose, the mental health of others."

"Armchair psychology can be a problem due to the simplistic nature of an armchair diagnosis, particularly as the arrogance (for lack of a better word), often displayed by an armchair psychiatrist in the accuracy of their highly uninformed opinion of complex mental health conditions, not only trivialises mental illnesses; but, also, to a layman, a seemingly simple and easily reached diagnosis can make treatment of a condition also seem simple and easily accessible when, of course, this is often not the case."

And a quote from your own article:
"and while I'm most definitely an armchair psychologist, psychiatrist, and MMOlogist..."

We haven't had a good pixel psychology thread in a while.

Having a read...

I'm only half-way through the article, but this is one of the saltiest, cringiest things I've ever read.

Reading on...

Article lost me at EVE.
I've hated a few games in the past (Diablow 2, I'm looking at you), but nothing compares to EVE on the Loathing Scale.

That said... there are as many different reasons why people act this way as there are people who act this way.

Yes, some of them had strange uncles that did things no one should do to another.
Yes, some of them are compensating for other short-comings in their lives.
Yes, some are simply bored, but refuse to find something else to do.
All of these things and many more are true.

In the end, it's just something some people will do, others will not.

We all engage in this sort of thing every once-in-a-while, though, don't we?

I see a guy walking down the street arguing with the invisible man next to him (no, he didn't have a Bluetooth earpiece in his ear) and the sad part was that he lost the argument. You know the guy isn't quite all there, even without six years of training in a qualified college.

I guess we have to base things on our own experience and use our internal database of what we know to be normal in order to determine if the guy waving the gun around is just acting out some anger issue in his head or if he's about to act out by actually shooting at others. This assessment is what determines if you run for cover or just ignore the guy.

As the old saying goes: "I'm not a proctologist by trade but I know an a**hole when I see one."

It's a shame that he goes as far as saying "This leads me to believe that habitual griefers are just broken human beings.", largely on the extreme side... Which undermines his rather funny and thoughtful "essay". Salty, yes...

Because until then (which is at the end of the article), I kinda agreed on his points, especially regarding game behaviour vs real life behaviour. I believe you act in games and on internet like you act in life, or wish you could act. you play as the character you want to be, with your definition of fun. Sometimes, that definition and that will are just not on the sharing, friendly side. but it's ok.

This is no psychiatry, not alking about mental health and cure, just an opinion.
Or we'all armchair "-----".
Can't talk about food, cause I'm no cook. Can't talk about games, cause I'm no game designer. Can't talk about things, cause I'm nothing. Just leave me where I know my business and may I never express anything else. Pure waste of air.

i didnt write the article - just found it interesting

I dont necessarily agree with any/all of it - but enjoyed non the less

Careful. For whatever unknown reason the griefers are embracing their status as the “poor put upon” victim with both arms. Practically a death grip.

Yeah, they're all in here playing the victim card. Crying and commiserating and running off to Solo play.

who was i attacking? I linked an article I found interesting nothing more nothing less

He literally calls such players broken human beings.

The only potentially redeeming feature is that it is so absolutely salty in content that it may well be a parody of other armchair psychologists.

We're talking "off the Richter scale" level of salty, right there.

That's some weapons grade butt-hurt right there..

"weapons grade butthurt"...I'm nearly crying man, don't do that to me xD

i kind of agree - but in your original post in this thread you referred to OP as in Original Poster - were you referring to me or the author of the article?
