Nerf Reverski

Word!

Reverski makes pew pew in ED just a bit silly.

Now let us ignore physics because ED does.

Ships are given a set forward speed and this forward speed is given by the visually large engines and the wonderful boost.

Most directions for the ship are controlled by the smaller thrusters.

I don't see a backwards facing thruster on any of the ships, so why can they fly backwards so fast?

My immersion! Destroyed!

Now I am not saying ships cannot reverse, the reverse just needs to be nerfed a little.
It was nerfed once before, early days. So there is precident.

This would make for far more dynamic pew pew!

Big ships would have to FAO and use turrets to counter their new loss of backwards tanking.

Skillless pilots with long range weapons, couldnt just fly backwards. Staying out of their targets normal weapon range.

Death to the big reverski!

Yep, some balancing is overdue. My suggestion from the other thread was to increase heat build up when reverse thrusters are used, especially beyond -75%. Also, Frenotx suggested removing throttle blue zone completely when reversing, which I think is a good idea.

why do we have speed loss if seeting thrust to 0 and FFA OFF? because the flight model isn't actually accurate.
In a proper real space flight setup people would boost into a vector, then turn their ship and shoot at the enemy like a turret does. thats how true and real space combat woudl look like.

and without reversky, dynamic is even less because it would all be about regular air fight style dogfighting. hell, Engineers even would invent ships with wepaons at the butt to make "forward fake reverskies" as this would be a superior way of compat in space - especially for trade vessels. Boost off and let automatic wepaons shoot at people hunting your back.

Good points, but 1) It can never be realistic, speeds have to be limited or we could accelerate infinitely, as would be the case in reality. And 2) There should be rear facing hardpoints on some ships

Never saw any reason why Reverse Thrust couldn't be treated the same as Yaw...scaled down compared to Forward Thrust...
It would make Combat more like the originally discussed/requested (at Kickstarter stage) Dogfight type combat...and arguably more maneuver based/skill based...and reduce SOME of the advantage inherent in High Shield large Ships...

True space combat would probably be carried out by sophisticated computers/AI, especially considering the speeds the ships would be travelling at. Having a squishy flesh-and-bones pilot with a slow brain is not realistic, stop killing my immersion FDev!

Also the previous two Elite games had psuedo-Newtonian physics and dogfighting was essentially just a protracted series of jousts. A lot people hated it.
