Just tried my first 3.03 skimmer mission

But I really like about the skimmer missions on this patch is that it is still doable, but it is hardly 'exploitable', mainly because of the defence system not letting you go back and forth, or because of the new C&P that gets you fine and bounties not easy to get rid off. I think it is a good balance :)

I'm glad skimmer missions are harder.

I'm less happy with how I put my ship at risk and get a bounty while I get paid less than I do hauling garbage 1 jump away.

Game balance should be risk vs. reward. Cargo/Data hauling: Low risk, high reward. Skimmer and massacre missions: High risk, low reward.

I'm having a blast against the Guardian Sentinels when they pop at the Guardian Structures. If the new Skimmer Missions are anything like it, i'm game for trying a few when i return to the bubble.

For 4.8 million (iirc) credits.

Skimmers didnt show till i went in with an srv (despite practically landing my ship in the middle of the compound) then i was surrounded by them. Took out 2, got stuck in a piece of scenery and picked to death by the remaining skimmers.

So congrats FD, you have managed to make the ever shrinking list of fun things to do in elite dangerous one item shorter.

No more store dollars for you :)

Sounds like its gone from easy mode to a fun challange. I will give them a go now.

Well done FDev for getting this right. Time to spend some money in the store.

Yeah, those skimmers are hard to see. Thankfully dumbfires have a very large splash radius. ;3

As for your attempt to kill the skimmers actually using the SRV like FDev wants, good luck! Those base defenses get pretty scary. It's fun ducking and weaving while trying to find safe blind spots to recharge your shield in. Just watch out if they call in air support of their own! Nothing quite as terrifying as having rail and PA shots slamming into the ground all around you!

I just took a skimmer mission (8 kills in O'brien's progress+++, Umbila). Worked like a charm. The FAS on the landing pad got me worried, but it didn't take off. I hope it's intended, because before, ships would snipe you way too easily.

Like you, I landed right in the middle of the base, deployed the SRV and sent my ship away. It took way longer than your method, partly because I'm not that good, and because you actually have to drive around the base, but it's really not that bad. Sure it was "only" a +++ base, but it's actually way more enjoyable than looking for blue circles 5km above ground and driving around "aimlessly". If a defense turret shoots you, shoot back. They are far more dangerous than skimmers.

I got some bounties on my head, but no notoriety, so you can erase that at an IF before going back to complete the mission.

So all in all, it's more difficult than before, but it's still very doable. With a bit of practice with the turret, it will feel like a tank simulation for sure.

while I agree that shooting skimmers (and other ground targets) from your ship is fun and should most definitely be a thing it should not generate millions of credits in rewards. however fighting skimmers the "proper" way in your SRV should.

it's too bad we can't have game mechanics where both are possible.

for example: you can kill skimmers from your ship but those kills won't count towards completing a skimmer kill mission...but if you want to wing up to scan high security bases and you're flying cover for someone you should definitely be able to take out ground targets...just not get millions in rewards for doing it.

You gotta laugh at all those skilled elite expert pilots having trouble killing 3 skimmers without dying. The mind boggles.

Are you kidding? No sane person would do combat in a srv if there were any alternative, maybe for the heck of it or if they needed a quick nearly free ride to orbit, but not with credits on the line.
The only thing they are good for imo is sightseeing and surface prospecting.

What are you talking about? So now to kill skimmers is actually a challenge.... That sounds amazing! I'll have to try it out when I'm back from Formidine!!

I guess if one only knew skimmer missions as "massacre them with missiles from the FDL" then yeah, I guess one would actually have to play the game as intended now.

Some of us despise the SRV with a passion.

Skimmer missions were a hoot, zoom thru the settlement, loop around and blast the skimmers with dumbfires/PAs, then go hunting for more in POIs.

The SRV is a barely controllable go cart wannabe.

The blasted thing gives me nausea, even on a monitor. In VR? Forget it.
