Just tried my first 3.03 skimmer mission

I stockpiled some Selenium and Technetium for the Sentinel Guardians, do the same for the Skimmer missions. Synthesize some SRV weapons rounds with 30% bonus damage.

This guys' got the right idea! Mining with the SRV is even mroe fun than combat with the SRV so u gotta mine the mats to do the combat man what FUN!

Are you kidding? No sane person would do combat in a srv if there were any alternative, maybe for the heck of it or if they needed a quick nearly free ride to orbit, but not with credits on the line.
The only thing they are good for imo is sightseeing and surface prospecting.

- Get in SRV
- Trigger skimmers
- Get in ship
- Nuke skimmers

That not work?

I have never shot a missile ever. People may or may not like the SRV, i get that. I have done a fair few skimmer missions in the buggy, skimmers are really really easy to kill.
Just land somewhere 10-20km from the target, follow the radar, pick up materials whilst finding mission target skimmers as well, away from the target base.
Max you will face is 4 skimmers at once usually.
Its easy an you can make a reasonable ammount of cash.

That is my two ‘penneth

I don't know if I'd really count firing a dimbfire missile in the general vicinity of a bunch of tiny targets that pose 0 threat as "ship combat".

But isn't that the essence of air-to-ground warfare?

Some settlements will fire turrets and or missiles at you.

So guys, I just drove up to a base in my SRV to lure the skimmer out. Once they launched, I returned to my ship. Took my ship to the base, shot the skimmers, and the mission was marked as complete. If you really want to kill skimmers with mines and missile you still can- just have to draw them out using an SRV first.

FDev: you haven't necessarily fixed the issue here, just added another step. If your goal is to make players have to fight skimmers using the SRV, then having the skimmers retreat to safety when a) a ship is present, and b) there are no nearby SRVs might be a good approach.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad they're back! I haven't beaten up on the proletarians of the Alpha Reticuli Worker's Union since they were removed, I'm sure they missed my tender ministrations. I always played the missions legit from my SRV and made good money and mats from them, so I'm quite happy. :)

I stacked 6 of these missions last night (same board, same target station, no board flipping performed/required (which was awesome, btw).
I dropped in on said target and dropped my SRV 3k out. I got told I was in a trespass zone at 2.5k in my ship (again, awesome).
Rolled up to the base and whacked a ground turret, then deployed into the SRV turret. (same as pre-exploit fix).
skimmer city! waves of 5.

5 waves wasted without so much as moving an inch with plenty of time to synthesize repair/reload in between waves.

Great target practice with just enough challenge to keep it interesting. well done Fdevs!

For all you whiners out there, if you took the 5 minutes to set your turret controls up and actually figured out how to use it/drive your SRV while turreted you *might* find skimmers to be hilarious fun. oh wait, seems the main whiners are the dumbfire missle bunnies who watch Yamik's garbage channel on how to exploit...

This is what I wanted to see CMDR, rep for you! Was finishing off my mining requirements for Selene last night so I didn't run any skimmer missions but that's on the plate for tonight after a bit of engineering.

So, skimmer missions are back, but because you can't make 100M in an hour people now realised they don't like skimmer missions LMAO

The funny thing is you can still make very good money from them. Once allied with the mission giver, rewards are between 3M-8M each mission with a selection of T5 mats as a reward as well. Even without board flipping you can stack at least 5 most of the time and be back in the barn after 30-45 minutes even while doing them in a SRV.

I know, I'm about to claim like 17 of them right now!

I am certifiably sane and have made tens of millions per session by driving into high security bases in the SRV and destroying everything there.

Planetary assault missions are one of my favorite activities to boost rep and make quick money. Using ship to kill skimmers not required.

I guess the good news is that these changes that have caused heads to explode are completely transparent to me, since I've only ever used the SRV for these missions.

No, no, no. I'm never going to play again. My only joy in the game was the fizz of the dumbfire, that glorious pop of the skimmer and the chink of cash rolling into my bank account. There's nowhere else you could get such satisfaction from the game. There was plenty of challenge in those missions in trying to find the right place and expertise in the way you logged to get the right missions to spawn.

Can we have SRVs that launch dumfires, so that I can carry on playing?

Cant Frontier just make missile defences and laser turrets to defend the skimmers. The most anoying thing with the SRV is that you need to man your own turret to fire. It should be automatic or doable from the SRV. :)

It works, but its dumb; requiring the SRV to spawn skimmers is the solution to the wrong problem.

Actual Problem: The mission board generates dozens of the same mission to the same location (this is true for lots of mission types).
Solution: Have the BGS limit the number of "Active" missions per player to a particular location (1-5 seems reasonable).

Even if the above solution is unworkable due to BGS limitations, at minimum FDev could have just improved the Anti-Aircraft defenses of bases and then pilots had a choice between: A- Sneak into base via SRV for less risk but harder skimmer kills, B- Fly directly over base for more risk but easier kills.

Like I keep saying, if you are already at a reasonable combat level, these are probably very lucrative missions, but for a beginner they are really difficult.

I just switched to the dumbfire missile ploy, equipped my Cobra III and went back to the base to hopefully complete the mission I had been struggling with.

Lo and behold, there was an npc ship circling the base, not an authority vessel, but as soon as I was tagged 'wanted' it came straight for me. Totally rigged.

When you think about it, why would base commanders deploy skimmers to deal with a threat from a ship? They can barely scratch a SLF! Base ground-to-space weaponry needs to be buffed. 3x-5x as many laser turrets and some Macross-style missile batteries should do the trick. Even high-sec bases are very lightly defended compared to what they could be.

It was presumably there to defend the base. If someone attacks the base, it makes sense that the patrol ship would immediately engage.

Really?

My current mission is at Behnken Oasis in Laksak system. It's only a +base, really just a few outbuildings, but I counted 14 defence turrets, I managed to get 2 of the 4 skimmers using my two SRV's, but I could not complete the mission.

I realise I should cherry pick the missions and only go for the lightly defended bases, but how am I supposed to know where they are?

I wouldn't actually consider that an exploit, quite clever in fact and clearly good fun.
