Just tried my first 3.03 skimmer mission

Really?

My current mission is at Behnken Oasis in Laksak system. It's only a +base, really just a few outbuildings, but I counted 14 defence turrets, I managed to get 2 of the 4 skimmers using my two SRV's, but I could not complete the mission.

I realise I should cherry pick the missions and only go for the lightly defended bases, but how am I supposed to know where they are?

The ground defense turrets can be destroyed you know? Approach the base using terrain as cover, take out the turrets that can range on you and you're golden. They do respawn after a time, but still are hardly a threat if you stay aware and deal with them. Getting pounded from multiple angles? Pip up those shields and get the heck out of dodge and come at it from another direction.

OK, next mission was to destroy 4 skimmers, bit like the last one.

I arrive at Navigator Settlement in system LTT 7251. There's an authority vessel parked and it comes for me as soon as I approach and get wanted tag. I escape.

I return shortly after and the authority vessel has gone, to be 'replaced'? by an npc 'Protium', rated deadly, quietly encircling the base, I hover out of reach but he stays circling like a frikkin predator.

Now convince me that these missions are reasonable and this game is player friendly.

edit. 'Protium' aggs off after about 5 mins so I approach the base again. At this stage I still need to land and deploy SRV.

I get close to base and another npc appears out of nowhere, tags me and blasts away. I leg it once again.

Had enough of this now.

You trespasses and got a bounty, so the cop came after you. A ship is guarding a base that apparently is frequently attacked. Nothing seems unusual there.

I don't mind that, but do you ever get a chance in this game to ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING?

btw I'm still patiently hovering around Navigator Settlement, waiting for this npc to get lost, 20 mins into this 'easy' mission and quietly supping my Jameson.

Never posted as much about ANY other game before, I know it's pretty much for more intelligent and geeky players and I respect that, but it sucks in so many aspects.

btw I'm 68 years old so forgive my anger. I also much prefer to f and blind and curse a bit but the forum police are a bit touchy.

edit again. just realised that Navigator is a 'high security base', one more to add to my check list.

Explains why the guards were like elite to me.

BUT why advise me that this mission was targeted at my NOVICE level????????????

This game should be re-titled ELUSIVE.

I'd say yes:

The most anoying thing with the SRV is that you need to man your own turret to fire. It should be automatic or doable from the SRV. :)

I don't know on which platform you play, but you could also use your mouse to control the turret. I have a hotas and played with a hybrid setup for a while. Throttle to control the SRV, mouse for the turret. It's very easy. I'm trying to get used to the stick to control the turret, but it's much harder. I might go back to my hybrid setup, especially when taking on bases.

As for my current skimmer killing spree, low sec bases are really easy. Medium are a more difficult as some skimmers will have shields and come in larger packs and seem a bit more aggressive. Don't stay in open, get some buildings to cut their line of sight I had to repair my srv and pull a "strategic retreat". I don't think I'll try high sec bases just yet. But man, it is fun and refreshing.

Sorry Ilo, did not really understand all that, I guess you meant you had some success. Maybe I'm just a Wally and I'm really not getting this game lol.

I would suggest not waiting for the NPC to leave. SRVs are not an easy target to hit, so you could try just doing the mission while driving evasively. I suggest dismissing your ship, first. That way if you get destroyed in the SRV, you just respawn back in your ship safely in orbit.

Just no you know, missions aren't really generated "for you", they're just generated. Sometimes you're going to run into missions that are beyond what you can do at the time. Missions usually have a rating that gives you a rough idea of how hard they are, but it's not perfect. If a particular mission or mission type is giving you too much trouble at the time, you can always do some other activity and try that mission type again later on when you've had time to beef up your skills and equipment.

Edit: If you want, don't be afraid to reach out for help. There are plenty of players (such as myself) that would be glad to wing up with you, give you a hand, and help get you up to speed.

Or wing up with someone to finish it!

Dont chose the first missions based on the pay, but based on the difficulty. Once you get the grip and get used to it it will go easily. whatever++ is a serious target. +++ just forget about it, get a whatever+ completed (or even without the +) so you have the opportunity to see what are you against.

I think I get that, but I only take on missions at my level anyway, in this case 'novice' combat.

But when you take on a mission in a system you have never visited, you don't know what the security level is until you do a full scan, which means you have to go there before you take on any skimmer missions, which is totally dumb. If you take on a skimmer mission and then you find it's a high security base and you are a novice, you are basically stuffed.

If the base looks too heavily defended, then you can just search for skimmers in the surrounding area. I believe that all skimmers within 100km or so of the base will be from the same faction. I've completed many skimmer missions this way, and you get to collect materials too. :)

No, this is why bases have nothing, +, ++ or +++ appended.. the more +++++ the more you don't want to go there :)

Navigator base (which I just gave up on) is +base. It is still 'high security' labelled. Every time I go back there, the ground units start to attack my ship at 4.5 km range and there is always an npc present waiting and as soon as I am in range it flies up to attack. I would love to capture this to illustrate the absurdity before I delete this game.

did you try to destroy the turrets before landing?

I just finished one. It wasn't any different from what I remember? Except the skimmers were all there at the target, and I think they respawned once. They dropped just as fast, and barely scratched the shields (put 4 pips to shields when under fire people. It works the same in the SRV).

The pay was decent. Worth doing, but not way out of line.

/shrug. I'm not seeing the problem, peeps. Fun was had; money was made.
