You do realise that no-one's making anyone buy them? And that they have zero in-game effect other than making your ship a bit more colourful?
It's pay-to-look-pretty*, not pay-to-win...
*And the "pretty" part is subjective...
Well, it's like the "camos" in a lot of online shooters that actually make you easier to spotAlthough the game extras do not purchase a direct benefit in the game, some do provide a disadvantage to the user in PVP:
(a) ship more visible in close combat ..... actually the Black Friday jobs probably do generate a slight advantage, especially where stealth is required against another player;
(b) colored engine trails give away your presence and direction;
(c) colored laser fire gives away your presence and what you are firing on.

Unless you're trying to derail the thread, I have to ask. You do realize most paints are for small to medium ships right? Eagle, sidewinder and cobra paints are far more unique and thought out than the big ships paints by far. I mean, Onionhead for large ships would be sick...And you missed my point. FD are encouraging Big Ships in the game. Their very presence changes the game for everyone else.

Make the Big Ships easy.... sell them paint in the store. Am I alone in thinking the store greed is damaging this game?

It's not damaging the game... it's hurting ED's bottom line, though, IYAM. Think about this: Is it better to have 330 item types each at $3.00, and only sell 30,000 units, or have 33 item types each at $3.00, and sell 90,000 units?
I for one would buy more than the one paint pack I have bought if they covered every ship. As it is, I know that my one AspX paint pack only works on an AspX, so that A.) makes me not want to change ships very often, and B.) makes me hesitate to buy another paint pack, lest my original investment be rendered obsolete. As it is, only 1/6th of a paint pack is visible/usable at a time, and it only covers 1/30th of any potential fleet. If you sold a Unified paint pack, which could be applied to ALL ships in a given fleet but only had ONE paint job, then your investment would A.) make you comfortable with the investment knowing that whichever ship you're flying, you can have your signature look, and B.) allow you to buy another pack if your original purchase doesn't look good on another ship type without rendering it obsolete.
Let's say that instead of buying the Alliance Chieftain Vibrant paint pack, which gives six paint jobs at $3.00, you could buy a Vibrant Blue paint pack, which gives you one paint job for all 30 ships. Now, no matter which ship you fly, you have two options; Vibrant Blue, or Showroom Stock (60 potential combinations!). Now, you like the Vibrant Blue on your Chieftain, but on the Imperial Clipper you just bought, you'd prefer the Tactical Ice paint job. Buy the Tactical Ice Paint Pack, and now, every ship you own has three options; Vibrant Blue, Tactical Ice, or Showroom Stock (90 potential combinations!) You are still not discouraged to change ship type (and are even encouraged, to see how the job looks on other ships), so you may even decide to buy a third paint pack (let's say the Icarus Red) for your Federal Corvette, so each superpower has a unique look. Now you have four choices: Vibrant Blue, Tactical Ice, Icarus Red, or Showroom Stock (120 potential combinations!)
OK, you may think that that's not a sound business plan, giving away thirty paint jobs for $3.00 instead of six for $3.00, but if more people buy more items (which I guarantee the Unified Paint Packs would sell more units than the Individual Paint Packs) you're making more money. As it stands, my investment in ship cosmetics stands at $3.00, and because it doesn't carry from ship to ship, I'm not buying more of them. So they only make $3.00 off of me. Why stop there when they could be making $30.00 off of me for the ability to paint an entire fleet?
Anybody else see what I'm seeing?

It's coming ......![]()
They are just getting it caught up to the corvette. After the debacle of mass rep grinds finished in a weekend, I imagine a whole slew of new rank locked ships are flying around. Gotta pay the QA team, amirite?Meh, again some paint for the Cutter?
The cutter is the new Cobra MKIII![]()
Still no love for the Clipper.
