Route Plotter is TRASH

Do people not know what trial and error is anymore? When Col 70 gave me trouble, I started randomly selecting systems in the general direction I needed to go till it plotted something workable, or if it didn't then I shortened the distance and kept trying till something worked. Then flew there and repeated.

ive done the same. im only annoyed, that the route plotter wont just use my route to send me home...

What ship are you flying? Did the mass change at any point? You said you where on a rescue mission. The router plotter would need the exact same mass to get you back on the same route. It plots based on a full tank of fuel

good point, however im only missing limpets and my fuel is full...

Meaning ?

If you disagree with him it's only because you don't have the variety of experience he does. Never mind that he couldn't possibly know your experience, at the end of the day, your disagreement could only be because of ignorance. There is no other explanation. OP can't possibly be wrong, or doing something wrong, no, it's everyone else who's wrong.

My take: OP, you're probably doing it wrong. Or the route you're taking is in an area where the stars are very sparse and the route itself has extreme deviations that the route plotter doesn't like and wasn't designed for. I've been 65,000ly and back without an issue, and the new 20kly one is even better at finding wide deviations that the old 1000ly one couldn't handle. If you would care to make a video showing us exactly what the problem is that you're having, maybe we could explain whatever it is you're struggling with. Alas, the very vague OP you left us with doesn't go into anywhere near enough detail to diagnose an issue. It really is little more than a low-effort shiptoast.

Nearby permit locked areas play havoc with the route plotter. Apart from that it's pretty good and has come a long way.

feeling like exploring in my 50ly ASP I just picked a random direction out of the bubble
I go to Bernard's Loop - stars there require permit
ok
pick the horsehead next. same thing...
skip them and travel to next nearest nebula and the route plotter fails..
don't know how you guys do it but exploring is just a pain when I can't even go in a random direction I picked out of the bubble.
OP's dead on it sux!

Welp, there seems to be 3 factors here, mass, the permit locked systems and simple luck.

Not really much to do here

The route plotter, honestly, is pretty good now, compared to how it used to be, but I'd still give my Anaconda to be able to manually plot routes - or at least waypoints.

Z...

Er, not quite. Even over short distances with everything the same, the outward and return journey quite often differ, especially if the end jump on the outward journey was a fraction of the ship's maximum jump.

The route plotter as far as I can see does not take into account prior journeys.
