Obsidian Ant NEW VIDEO - Crime and Punishment is Flawed

In his new video, Obsidian Ant talks about the new crime and punishment system and its flaws.

OA is probably one of the most relaxed, positive people regards to elite, really. Regardless of personal opinion, OA will have attracted a respectable number of people into the universe. When even OA is starting to wonder, if Frontier are quite done going to a little bit of an extreme, you do have to ask if the Developer has simply gone one way, and the community that has built around the game, another.

To be honest, I just really can't be bothered to watch his videos anymore.

That's okay max, to be honest, I can't be bothered with your responses any more, either.

Sandy and the team are on a roll; they are so excited for the changes and how things are going, and it's all very interesting how all this works, they've not really stopped to check if there are still people in the same bus. I think the intent is good, and I certainly can see some real positives.

But when you are swinging folks from the trees, or burning them at the stake -- because of a 400cr fine -- maybe it's just time to stop doing that already.

I will reiterate where I think the next set of C&P improvements need to be made.

You know Marc, I'm fast coming to the conclusion that maybe asking Frontier to just make things more complicated (rather than clearer, wiser, simpler, smarter) might not be working out in commanders favour. Asking Sandy to make something more complicated and exciting, even with the best of intent, is akin to 'a red flag to a bull'. He doesn't stop.

The problem is, FD has a tendency to overcomplicate the heck out of everything (engineers, c&p, etc.). Simple but effective mechanics are better.

I believe there needs to be a few things that need to be done....just my opinion.....

1. have an option for your crew member to NOT attack system authorities (honestly I'm tired of the crew member attacking them if the authorities cross my line of fire and gain a bounty, then the crap storm unleashes)
2. you need something more than just death for a 200 credit fine (fines IRL don't mean KOS).... maybe a way option to pay a FINE if we are being interdicted by authorities,
3. if I'm to avoid bigger ships coming in and out.....why don't the NPC's have the same rules.....I get tired of having a fine because of auto dock or me trying to get out of the station and an NPC fails to do what I'm to do....
4. how about an option to pay fines before you are able to access services....especially if you're in the system where the fine was incurred.....
5. and lastly why in gods name are the parts being fined.....i've lost way too many credits for getting my modules out of hock....way too extreme in my opinion....I don't see the tire shop holding my tires for speeding!!

I agree with most of what OA said. Imo, different types of punishment ought to be applied dependent on seriousness of crimes - e.g., friendly fire or private data point scans where no murder or destruction is committed.

Why does it take for some random youtube content 'creator' for folks to get it? Criticism of much of what FD do is freely available on reddit and the forums to a lesser extent given this area of the internet is like room 101.

So I've seen suggestions.. I don't watch Ants vids anymore because they are too negative.. lol He instantly replies covering his tracks.. I have no issue with him or his channel but the truth is that things aren't good with respect to the game. They haven't been for a very long time.

The discontent is impossible to ignore. Considering the history, and the output, I firmly believe that investment in this game from a resource pov from Braben died quite some time ago. Ever since release there really hasn't been much of an effort to really make an expansion and fully embellish things.

I'll be happy to be proved wrong but the chumps pretending everything is aight, if we only just wait that little bit longer really are living in a dream world.

ED has reached its critical mass when it comes to audience. There aren't any more platforms to release it upon. 95% of purchases from steam don't play the game.

Why would Braben, who has not so long ago gotten much richer, put his money back into fully resourcing ED?

He won't, their focus is on their next franchise and furthering 'the business'..

I just think folks need to wake up.. There wont be any huge expansions, no atmos landings, no space legs.. They'll just plod along do as little as possible and make as much out of folks as they can.

I will be a happy chappy for you to be proved wrong except also don't see additions of new major features will happen in 2018. I bought this game when t'was 2.2 and was hyped about multi-crew inbound in 2.3 ... and majority if not all CMDRs were so disappointed. I was exceptionally disappointed b/c I was a newbie then and expected game expansions to be more than just a broken multi-crew and ability to create your own Avatar that has no other function except sit or stand.

To add salt to a wound, players are offered to pay real monies to buy indifferent outfits or face painting. I feel sorry to players who spent so much monies and time in the hope FDev will enable atmospheric planet landings with their financial support :(

In my opinion the C&P system is great, finally there are consequences for what you are doing! Sure there are still bugs that need to be fixed (like you have notority 0 and cant pay of your bountys) but overall its a very good step in the right direction.

As other have already stated the problem is that people are used to play in a specific way and are now forced to think about what they are doing. I dont know any pvp player who would fit an undersized FSD in their combat ships for example.

I really hope FD stays with the new system, i think the community as a whole will profit from it because they are forced to think about what they are doing and with some luck they start to think about other stuff so they will improve their skillset overall.

Complex?!?! They've been massively *simplified*. C&P and the Engineers are now much more clear cut & legible than was previously the case. Are they perfect? No, but definitely much improved.

sir, care to share a comprehensive explanation of how c&p works that's usable for any new players? in a couple of sentences or a paragraph?

asking because i've seen sandro himself struggling when trying to explain this thing. last i checked it was half a page full of bullet points and exceptions, and even that wasn't final and needed some additional clarifications.

please, enlighten us.

Yep, crime is broken up into two types-Minor (Fines) & Major (Bounties), all of which attach themselves to the ship you committed the crime in. All crime in a jurisdiction cuts off almost all services offered by that jurisdiction-except mission completion, Law Enforcement Contacts & Black Markets.

Fines can be paid off anywhere, but Bounties can only be lost by getting cleaned by Interstellar Factors or being "Brought to Book".

In addiiton, Murder Bounties earn the player-not the ship-Notoriety, which degrades as 1 point per 2 hours. Bounties cannot be cleaned whilst you have notoriety, & also impact how much money you need to pay if you are "Brought to Book".

Or, to put it more succinctly. You do the crime, you do the time.

Well, calling players braindead won't give you any sympathy votes I can assure you. Let's stop with name calling.

I wasn't the first person to say that in this thread but you quote me? Says a lot about a lot.......

............ like I said; attribution error.

As Marc pointed out there's nothing mysterious about new C&P. Major point of tension is a) friendly fire with powerful weaponry b) people not understanding that some of missions are effectively wet jobs and thus illegal.

FD has their own share to blame, some of missions does not spell it is illegal. But lot of 'new C&P complexity' is really adding consequences where there none before. So suddenly you have to care what mission statement says.

edit: also some people having glitchy notoriety counters does not help with perception.

New C&P in general is good. Main problems:

1. small bounties / fines lead to an unnecessary effort
2. game doesnt inform the player about consequences
3. players that were used to the old system now think that illegal activies from before 3.0 should not have consequences

While 1 is a thing that can be easily tweaked, 2 is the general "problem" of Elite: "Game-Play-Management by hiding ingame information" and thats a thing they have to work on immediately (valid for almost every part of the game), and 3 is our own problem.

Okay so now that a YouTuber is saying it maybe people will take it seriously. The C&P system should have another pass. I don't think it got the proper amount of attention it should have because it was wrapped up with the overhaul for Engineers. Maybe in the future FD can break these up into smaller patches and let each specific overhaul get a proper patch all to it's self.
