My beloved Federal Dropship - Good niche uses?

Hello CMDR’s,

One ship that I really enjoy (and miss) flying is the Federal Dropship. I love the look of the ship and the feel of it also. Oh the coffee maker! I built my FDS, the Blue Bison to do the Palin missions before they were nerfed and had great fun with it. It was perfect for that role. It was easy to land near the Thargoid bases, had slots for everything I needed, and could easily handle the Imperial Clippers that would interdict me on the way back to Maia. But since those misions are no longer a thing my FDS doesn’t have a job to do anymore :-(

I have most of the big ships (yes I have a Python too), but I am looking for a good use for the FDS.

Would it be possible to turn an FDS into an all-in-one Ram Tah mission ship though? I’d put up with the short jump range if I could use it to do all aspects of the mission from collecting the tissue samples to getting the rest done. Could I rig it for silent running instead of purchasing a DBX to get the tissue samples? It does seem to run hot which is why I am skeptical for this role, but I am willing to re-engineer it if I can make that work. Good-bye G5 DD’s?

Still, I’d love to hear some interesting ideas of what CMDR’s are doing with the FDS? Does it shine in some role that I haven’t thought of?

I started a thread in the Ships of Elite sub-forum about ships that are good for salvage missions. More than one person has mentioned the FDS as being a great choice.

On my primary account I used one for mining until I could properly fit out a Python.

I got my second account around Christmas and bought the FAS, FDS and FGS when the rank requirements were lifted temporarily.

Not having a ton of credits I fitted out the Dropship and ran ran cargo, mined and transport missions. The ship makes a great jack of all trades and I enjoyed the hours in it.

The Dropship is my material prospector, two SRVs, wake scanner, advanced disco, surface scanner, colector limpets, 32 tons cargo space and a fuel scoop.
Fully shielded, armed and engineered I can search for materials all day long.

I like the Dropship.

Not enough images of FDS in this thread:

Artemis Lodge in Celaeno. One of the most scenic starports / rescue ships around.

On-topic: I love the looks of the FDS. I wish it would change stats with the FAS which I love flying.

I use(d) mine for skimmer missions.

I've configured an imperial clipper as a general runabout for collecting materials, salvage cargo, and wake scanning. Adv discovery scanner, detailed surface scanner, collector limpet, SRV, 4A fuel scoop and the rest is cargo. If I were flying the FDS I'd configure it similar.
