Fined for cargo?

I took a cargo mission for a station faction, found the land mines they requested, and when I pulled into the station to drop off the land mines they scanned me and fined me 700,000 credits. I already had to spend money to buy the land mines and the mission only pays me the reward and not for the land mines themselves. Mission was 6 mill for 1200 land mines. Cost to buy landmine was 5 mill. Now I get fined 700k for delivering the cargo they asked for? What the hell...

What station gave you the fine? Out of curiosity, why haul landmines? There are much more profitable ways to make money if you own a large freighter. You should be aiming for 4 million credits per 180 tonnes hauled, more if you find a good area.

@Vardaugas - Not sure if it is a newbie error, the mission description should state if the cargo is illegal.

Station is epsilon eridani. Mission didn't say and doesn't say anything about illegal cargo. Source 1207 landmines from a suitable market. Convey goods to darkest high in epsilon eridani.

They were illegal in the jurisdiction. Learn to smuggle.

Yes, the truth is always useless. Shall I spin up a lie to make you feel better?

You were set up, lied to, cheated and robbed. It was a conspiracy set in motion by The Club, under guidance of the Thargoids to deprive you of credits, because no faction has ever requested anyone deliver any illegal goods, as everyone is a perfect, law-abiding citizen. You should launch an entire series of YouTube videos in protest, and downvote all of Reddit until they send Sandro to your home to hold your hand and tell you everything will be alright.

There, is that what you wanted to hear?

Missions will not usually tell you if cargo is illegal or not, unless they are specifically labelled as smuggling missions (Sneak in X tons of Y). But these kinds of mission happen all the time, every day, at nearly every station.

General Rule: If the Cargo could be, or is innately, harmful to anyone in any way, it's very likely illegal somewhere. If the cargo is alcoholic, narcotic, recreational, or could be used for fun, it's probably illegal somewhere, and certainly in Theocratic systems - which is also where it is most often desired.

Harsh however I'm not sure if its a "Useless reply".
There are tricks to getting thru the toaster without being scanned.
If you want we can teach ?

These missions are so stupid. Why have a mission where you get 6 mill reward but the cost to buy the supplies is 6mill? Makes no sense.

Now this is a useless reply.
Just not productive.

Well, if you don't find it productive to check if a mission is worth doing or not, that's your call. I'd suggest it's a bad one. ;)

According to the OP, the mission reward was 6 million, and the cost of cargo was 5 million. So, there would have been 1 million profit if smuggled... A mission shouldn't necessarily result in a profit at all if you can't avoid fines when running it...

You should always be cautious shipping anything to do with weapons, apparently legal or not.

Treat them as contraband and practice entering the slot quickly and efficiently without being scanned. With practice it gets easier, and comes in handy later when you may have someone on board who "doesn't want to be noticed."

You have to learn these skills. It's what makes the game interesting and keeps you coming back for more.

That doesn't sound right. Any source or haulage mission should be marked as smuggling if the cargo is illegal at any of the ports. Probably another thing for the bug report list. As a back up I tend to check the prohibited items on the system map.

Ditto.

Y'know.. there's absolutely nothing wrong with checking out missions - can you source a commodity nearby? Is it profitable to do so? I mean, this is just basic Uncommon Sense. Applies to the real world too - looking for the best value for your currency is never useless or non-productive.

But hey, Blaze Your Own Trail, Play Your Way, even if it means playing for a loss every time you take a mission, if that's what you want to do.

1) As the others already said, that fat "illegal cargo" warning on your bottom right HUD should have given you a hint.

2) This game requires you to do your homework, especially for these cargo sourcing missions. You could have bought those 1200 tons of Landmines for 4.2 MCr, leaving you with 1.8 MCr. of profit. Not really overwhelming for smuggling that amount, but not too shabby, either.

And no, not every mission that is on offer will make you a profit. That's another thing you have to think about before accepting one. These missions also have an indicator how difficult they are likely to become, and you also get a warning if that misison's difficulty exceeds your current rank. Apart from that - you get a chance for turning a profit, not a guarantee.
