XBL gamer tag change

Ya I want to change my gamertag but that would mean all my old tagged discoveries would still be with the old name, I don’t think I’d like that so I’m just leaving it. I am who I am now. Everything with Xbox, Xbox games, and ED is with ThomasWJames but on PC games and steam i’ve always been Grayfox. It’s like I have multiple personality disorder.

That's not true, first discoverys will get changed too.

Holy crap! I didn’t know. You’ve just given me something to think about. Grayfox is obviously taken on Xbox but maybe some other version of it. Damn, I don’t know what to do now lol as I think most of my Xbox/Elite community know me as ThomasWJames, it’s my forums, INARA, and Discord name as well. I have some thinking to do.

I changed my gt not long back and was annoyed that Verbz was taken as ive used that for a long time (about 15 years or so) with things, so decided to use "o" so its now o Verbz o .... makes it nice and simple imo... hope that helps Cmdr o Grayfox o

Strange that there's lots of Moles and derivatives about on both Xbox and PC gaming generally...but there's only one Mole HD. I've used it on PC for many years since the birth of online gaming in the early 90's, then Xbox Live for 8 years then back to PC over the last year and a bit... Moving back to PC was simply a matter of reactivating my original Steam, Origin and Ubisoft accounts from years ago (once I remembered the passwords [rolleyes] ). It was also nice to have all my old PC games still in my Steam/Ubisoft/Origin Access libraries too.

I was given the nickname over 35 years ago in the army and it's how I've been known by everyone since then... with the exceptions of my Mother and my bank manager. It's not simply an online moniker so I'm quite attached to it.

Due to RP'ing the whole naming thing in Elite and gamertags kinda constitutes a break of immersion every single time I play it... i.e. always being referred to in text via the 'tag, not my character's name. I've considered changing names, but my 'tag's something I've kept all the way through the Xbox systems, so changing it now would feel off.

In game it's at least better now that we have the choice of how station control's address us, so I've changed my fleet idents to incorporate the character's initials. I wish Elite would just let your enter a character name, and have the game refer to you by that instead.

It's a Microsoft and Xbox live thing rather than a Frontier issue...since your Cmdr name on PC can be totally separate from your Frontier account details should you wish.

Huh, really? Hadn't thought of that. Well, I obviously hadn't thought how names on PC are generated because I've no need or reason to.

Where are names on PC derived from, then? Sounds like there is simply an 'enter commander name' independent of any accounts.

My current Frontier account on PC is in my real name, even though I purchased the PC version through my Steam account and not direct from Frontier.... as opposed to my Xbox/Frontier account where it was tied into my Xbox live account and Gamertag by default (buying from the Xbox live store does this)...I picked my Commander name on first starting the game on PC, choosing to keep my online ID and Commander name from Xbox live that I've used for many years.

Even buying paint and kits from the Frontier store requires me to buy it via my Steam account, which isn't unlike Xbox live in that respect. I have to order the stuff from the Frontier store...which then redirects to my Steam account for payment...then back to Frontier store for confirmation. It sounds complicated but in reality it's not since it's done externally to E-D via my browser whilst E-D happily continues in the background. My game also downloads updates direct from the Steam servers..which are a huge degree faster than Frontiers own.

When I created my extra XBL account, I wanted a name that reflected the exact opposite of what I am. So I used KITSITRA. Wasn't taken, and sounds cool, IMO.

The odd thing about this though.....is that SOME multiplayer xbox games allow you to name your character seperately from your gamertag and some also give you the option to display players character name instead of gamertags. 2 examples off the top of my head are Ark survival and Dragon Ball Xenoverse

So.....im guessing it isnt "a microsoft thing" and more of a lazy dev thing???

I do see your point and agree, but as it stands with E-D, Frontier are tied by the rules set by Microsoft and the way they operate Xbox live accounts along with the way Frontier operate their own purchases of games and store items as an Independent game developer... Not really an issue Frontier have a lot of say in to be honest.

If the game was a solo offline game, then perhaps...but Microsoft require that Xbox live Gamertag tie in for online accounts and accountability. The accountability being reference to player behaviour monitoring online...rep system, complaints system and achievements all set by Xbox live presence.

We don't have the extraneous online nannying system on PC so we can chose our own Commander names tied to our Frontier accounts as opposed to Microsoft and Xbox live accounts as an overriding factor.

Just the way it is unfortunately :(
