Don't do facebook so I have no idea about this...

Missus just got a facebook DM from, allegedly, an old friend claiming she won £80,000 from some kind of "Facebook Promo" and my Missus' name is also on the winners list.

Next thing I know, Missus is getting facebook DMs from some guy named "Donald Macleod", claiming to be an "agent for Facebook" and that he can confirm that my Missus is a winner in a "Promo".
He's asking for some personal details but nothing like bank details or other sensitive information.

Done a couple of google searches but I can't see anything which relates to this one way or the other but the whole thing absolutely reeks of "scam!" to me.

Anybody heard of anything like this before or have any advice on how to proceed?

Can you lend me a fiver !

Flimley

Nah, you're doing it wrong.

What you should be doing is saying "You've won £100 but you have to send me a fiver to cover the cost of processing your application"

Least, that's how my bitter, cynical, old brain works. [where is it]

What Brett said.
Known identity scam. My wife was approached just after Christmas with a similar scheme.

Avoid, block and report it Stealthie.

It's a scam. It sounds wholly like the starts of Identity fraud. Block the user, report said user to facebook, be done with it.

See, that's exactly the sort of explanation I was wondering about.

One of the things "Donald Macleod" asked was whether we're home-owners and that set off alarm-bells in my head.
I guess it's much easier to obtain loans when the person who's identity you're using has a home to use as collateral.

You can’t honesty think it was legit....

Its the uncertainty that these people prey upon.
If unsure, it's always best to check with these things.

My first rule: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably IS too good to be true.

It's definitely worth reporting the user to Facebook. Right now, they're desperately trying to give the impression that they care about us.

Heh, no.

Was just wondering what the motivation might have been and I guess identity-theft is the most likely option.

Sad thing is, Missus got the messages about this from an old friend so it looks like her FB profile has been hijacked as well.

I stopped using FB a few years ago when it was clear that they were monitoring my eBay and web browsing for advertising purposes.

Was on the fence about killing my account for some time, then all the hub bub of recent pushed me over the edge.....and poof, it's gone. I actually get work done now....crazy. (oh wait, besides posting here from the office....like right now.....crap)

Yea, just report the profile and move on. I've had scammers go out of the way to imitate friends, names/pics/friends everything, in order to scam me and people my friends would know. As soon as they start talking about money it's 100% a scam.

By clicking on any of that stuff you guys may have just caused a cascade of various follow ups.
I would be wary of things like duped accounts (of your wife) making friend requests (to current acquaintances) for the near future.
That is very common.
That's quite a can of worms in some cases.

Immediately report and then block anything like that.

No one posted 'it's a TRAP!'?

I am dissapoint.
Oh dear, Jenner am disappoint.
