Shadowbans and the BGS

Wait what? Shadow bans?

You mean that crappy thing from reddit where you don't tell someone they are banned because "f you we're reddit" is also in E:D?

Since when?

According to 2 commanders that were shadowbanned 2 years ago they still could play with others and have had influence on the BGS.

If that is possible why can't we have that work for solo&group/open so only open affects the BGS.

You hate people that don't fly in Open Mode SO MUCH that your suggestion is that they be treated exactly the same as people who have been found running "Bots" to farm the game explicitly against the rules??? Despite them having paid EXACTLY the same as everybody else to enjoy EXACTLY the same game features?

Exactly!

Talk about Apples and Oranges. ;)

Comparing BGS players in Solo to Bot farms is akin to getting hysterical about a lit candle on a table while totally ignoring the Dumpster Fire raging behind your house. ;)

If an account is shadowbanned, can they still affect the BGS?

Interesting question as if they can (and I suspect they still do), then shadowbans lose a lot of their edge. Shadowbanning bot accounts or those players who abuse the BGS through exploits are in no way limited via a shadowban and those abuses will continue. We just won't see them.

Either a straight up account game ban is required, or make BGS be unaffected by any shadowbanned account actions.

If we assume a shadow ban does in fact stop BGS & PP from being effected, that's great. The underlying problem is that its most likely also temporary. When dealing with bots or those exploiting the system, BGS OR PP, they loose nothing but time. Which in a lot of cases, if their already THAT invested, they have multiple accounts at the ready for anything. Replacements or fun, it doesn't matter. Frontier has sold Elite cheap on some really big sales, its brought a lot of players and people into the community to experience a truly amazing game, AND given people the ability to buy multiple accounts to do both good and bad. Now, without even going further, I have a second account JUST for exploration while my main scoots around with the rest of the humans. Occasionally I'll swap their roles as well. I'm not going to argue that having multiple accounts is inherently bad, if we as individuals love two very divergent aspects of this game and feel like supporting the title further with another account than in my mind that's great for everyone. BUT this in mind as an example, someone who's being nefarious in ED against ToS is likely to have multiple accounts, weakening a shadowban's effectiveness, and making it outright useless if its temporary. Just some thoughts of mine about it. I don't know completely how a shadow ban functions. questions OP didn't ask that I wonder is, 'Do shadow banned accounts make credits?' 'Are they allowed to vote in PP or improve reputation with minor factions while Shadow banned?' 'Does a shadow ban roll back the account in anyway?' 'What is an example of appropriate use of a shadow ban vs outright ban hammer by fdev, and if on a case by case basis, who's responsible for making those decisions?'

Personally, I think cheaters should just not be allowed to play period.

However, I do agree that solo/private groups should have their own separate bgs. And the "Canon" bgs should be open mode only.

It is illogical that someone can chooses to play alone or with specific groups of people can affect the mode of those that choose to play in open.

Tldr: Private/Solo should have one bgs and Open should have the "Canon" bgs.

So, six four versions of the BGS then? (players in Solo and Private Groups don't mind sharing....)

.... plus, surely the version with the most players should be Canon - so that could just as easily be Solo/PGs combined rather than Open....

Then there's the fact that Frontier have stated a few times that they consider all game modes to be equal and valid choices - not to mention the fact that every player, regardless of game mode (or now platform) both experiencing and affecting has been Frontier's desired game experience from the outset (and the current advertising specifically states that players in Solo can affect the economy, politics and conflicts in the galaxy)....

Nope - it's completely logical - as there is just one BGS to curate across all platforms and modes :D

People hide from opposition in solo and private modes.

Therefore, it is illogical they should be able to affect the BGS of people in open mode.

There isn't an argument here.

However, I will concede that you folks hiding out have nothing to worry about. FDEV won't take your safe spaces away.

Not at all illogical - given that the CEO of the company has stated that the game is not a PvP game, rather a game where PvP is possible.

The game has been designed to offer entirely optional PvP - it's hardly surprising that players that don't enjoy it don't play in Open.

What opposition? Are you going to buy a PS4 just so you can shoot me in the face? And an XB1 just in case I boot that up instead? Or perhaps keep looking for me on PC, hoping against all hope that the Instance Magic will work in your favour, and that your network health is sufficient to actually get us in the same instance so you can shoot me in the face for lulz?

Nobody is hiding - everyone is playing the game as they see fit to enjoy their gaming time to their preference.

I bet it chews you up that I play on Xbox mostly.

Your glorious PC can't hit me!

XD

Just quit mate. Nothing is going to change, you said so yourself.

And yes, modes are working as intended.

The way the rabid dogs come snarling and foaming ranting about how they need more turkeys for their turkey shoot, it's no wonder people who aren't masochists like to play in a different sandbox.

I get the impression they're more interested in shooting people than actually playing the BGS since they're so keen on opposing the background-manipulating scum who play in solo .

I'm sure some would be, and others just want another way to attack/defend a system. It's a reasonable feature request, but the existing BGS & Power Play layers are too well established to be significantly changed.

Another layer that was specifically for PvP could be added though.
