A direct answer from FDev please...

No they don't.

Trade Rank is based on the Profit you make while trading. If you always trade at a loss you've never gain any rank.

The easiest method to know the answer about the missions is directly associated with the rank required.

If you found data missions that required a trade rank such as Merchant. Then it should also award trading xp for that mission. As this goes for all of the missions to my knowledge.

It doesn't happen for data delivery missions.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't for any of the ground based missions either.

Hey OP, perhaps one of the Q&A sessions, or an email to community, or a cheeky ticket to support would be a good method of getting an answer. This is a duscussion forum for the community, so you are far more likely to get an answer, opinon, fact or lie here than a definitive truth from a dev, particularly at 1:48am UK time.

My opinion:
Data Deivery do not count to trade rank. As to the future, the specific mission type was not mentioned on the last Lave Radio where Adam aanswered a lot of mission/BGS questions.
Combat are the mission type he conceeded he ffelt it was worth re-visiting if they should count against rank as well.

Cheers
Simom

Shoo! What are you all doing here? OP specifically demanded an answer from Fdev!

Yeah, these threads always make me smile and cringe. At least the OP is polite, most of these threads demand an answer, this is a polite ask so who knows. Maybe they'll come in and say hello! :p

But yeah, the question has changed now from "Does it?" to "Why doesn't it?" and I guess there they actually do need FDev to answer.

Damn, I wish I was as important as the OP, demanding ever so politely that a Dev, not an Admin, not Customer Support, but a Dev, drop whatever they are doing and respond to him. I can image the heated meetings occurring at FD HQ now, the Devs all assembled to ensure their answer is correct and if it varies from what the OP wanted, the remedial action to rectify the situation. Bet those poor Devs won't get any sleep for weeks now until they receive word back that the OP is happy.

What a pity you have to cast cynicism on someone when they ask the developer of a game to explain a game mechanic.

To everyone else...

Thanks for your responses, which are appreciated.

Meanwhile, I'll contact support and ask them for a definitive answer and any likelihood of change. If the response is helpful, I'll post it on this thread.

Support might refer you back to this thread :p

And no - Data deliveries count towards trade rank as they're not a commodity - you can't trade in data.

Hope that helps - if not then I hope support can help.

V2k.

Data delivery isnt trade...its a courier service nothing more. Fer it to be trade, ye need to actually haul stuff...yer technically only carrying data and its stored on the ship and remains even after yer destroyed, whereas a shipment of lets say gold...well its now spread over a much wider area.

To my thinking, data delivery should never count towards the trade rank because I dont think of them as trade missions...I think of them as standalone rep building missions and they already have the huge advantage of being persistant on death. Imo thats enough advantage over many other missions in the game that instantly fail on death.

If ye want trade rank, stick with actual trading...same with combat and exploration. Each career path is supported by its own set of missions...as reputation itself is supported by data courier runs that pay peanuts but fasttrack rep, and to some degree, influence. Its one set of mission types that do exactly what they supposed to do ^
