Figuring Out The Guardians Without Help...

Well, I logged in today, with a purpose.

To see how far I could get with the guardians stuff without using anything other than in game tools and "rumours" (basic stuff I remember from reading here, which isn't much... Lol)

So I start my challenge in Deciat.
I've selected to use my Exploration DBX for this, due to something about tight landing zones.

Time: 0 minutes.
First task... Where the hell are they?
Turns out, that's easy-ish. There's a handy galmap filter.
After panning and zooming waiting for the galmap to reveal all, which it doesn't, I finally managed to trick it in to flashing up a system name.
Target set at the closest guardian system, some 7 jumps away.

Knowing nothing of the guardians really, I set galnet to chat away while I make the trip. 7 jumps later, and I've still not heard anything remotely useful.

Time: 10 minutes

In the target system, and hey presto, "Guardian Ruin" shows up on the nav panel.

That was easy. So I thought.

Turns out this is the old guardian site, I'd visited before. Lol
Doesn't seem very active.
Time: 15 minutes

Take 2. I fly to the next system on the filter.
Check the nav panel. Nothing.
Fly within 1000ls of most of the planets.
Nothing.

Figured I either must scan all the planets, or its on one 65k ls away.
Scan all the nearby planets.

Nothing.
Time: 35 minutes

Next system...!

I arrive, and begin scanning... again.
Eventually a ruin and structure pop up on the nav panel. Turns out scanning isn't required!

Time: 45 minutes.

I pick to land at the structure first.
Rough terrain, but the DBX makes it easy. Except I boosted in to the ground instead of deploy landing gear...
Hull: 53%
Time: 50 minutes.

I deploy the SRV, and immediately proceed to roll down a hill. Wasn't such a good landing spot. But I drive a short 200m to the structure.

From my previous experience with the ruins, I know I need the relics laying around. I scoop a load, and dump them in my DBX for safe keeping.
I also notice I can shoot panels off the ruins, in a similar manner to Lara Croft's "archaeology", and gather materials. For something.
A few obelisks light up, and I scan them for Alpha and Gamma whatsits. No idea what they're for. I continue to collect all relics.

Time: 60 minutes
Then... A sentinel shows up!

Fun! I kill it, and scoop more materials...
(It shot me first, ok?... Self-defence!)
Then more show up. And I kill them too.

With all the relics I need, I decide to check out the ruins. So I fly off, and later land at the ruin site.

Time: 70 minutes
There's no one around. Because, well, solo. Lol

I land, and go for a drive.
I now have literally no clue what I'm doing.
I grab more relics, and drive around some more. Nothing is lighting up for a scan.

I decide to get a better view of the area, and jump my SRV over the base, and then look around with the camera.

It's a bit dormant here. No movement.

After a "soft" landing, using my turret, and doing untold damage. I sit and ponder what to do.

Time: 90 minutes

Menu -> Quit to desktop.

Lol

Lesson learned. Don't try and play the game without atleast having a degree in "tomb raider archaeology" and cryptography.
Or access to the forums where someone else has done it all for you, and you just need to follow the steps like a Muppet.

That was my allotted play time used up. And now I feel like actually playing Tomb Raider...

How did you ‘trick’ the galaxy map into revealing a guardian site?
I also challenged myself as you have to find these sites with just in game info. I set the filters in the galaxy map to civilisation/Guardians etc, but it never highlights any guardian sites? I spent some time zooming in and moving around the search area.
In addition I looked thought all the Galnet news and even though there were relevant stories, there were no site locations to type into galmap.

One day I had exactly the same idea, but with engineering. Go and visit one Engineer, select blueprint, see what's needed and then, just using in-game tools and information go hunt them. No instance switching, no alt-tabbing, no 3rd party tools. Just me and game.

Idea came quite some time ago, still haven't attempted to perform it live. I may be exaggerating but I expect flying aimlessly and wishing for a blind luck to strike. Not the best method for a gaming evening.

Excellent choice. It's rather good fun. No grind there.

Oh, it's Tomb Raider Anniversary.

1. Because it's a smaller download than "Tomb Raider", and my internet is slow. So slow! It's still going to take 2 hours... Lol
2. Because it has dinosaurs in it.
And 3. Because I really wanted to play the original Tomb Raider, but it just looks so bad... And probably just won't run anyway. But it's so small! It is 22 years old now though. Lol

The new(er) Tomb Raider will be downloading after Anniversary. But that likely won't finish until some time next month.

They need to make Tomb Raider 2&3 Anniversary...

It doesn't show the site, just the system.

Set it to show guardian systems only. Zoom, and pan around like a looney in the general direction of them, looking for a system name to pop up for a split second. Then zoom in and hopefully you'll see some systems.

I set galmap phasers to ‘civilisation’ ‘guardians’. I followed the yellow brick road, and rode the hasslehoff... panned around for a very long time love you five dollar. Nothing revealed its self what so ever. Nothing.
In the end I had to remove the Oculus, (which I really didn’t want to do) and found a location using this forum. Went back to galmap (with filters fixed) hovered around that system and it still didn’t highlight it.

A few weeks ago when the new Guardian content went live, there was at least one Galnet article where Ram Tah speaks of his discoveries and reveals three new Guardian locations (with clickable links to the galmap! - 31st century technology at last!). Maybe you can still find that one in-game.

Many thanks. I will relook. I did however a few days ago search though every article. I don’t know how long these stories remain live though ?

It was like that when 2.1 released. Instant nope.

Hopefully the codex in Q4 will help improve finding things like this on your own. Ram Tah gave us three sites to start off with in his Galnet news story.

There were players who had ideas about like geo-tectonical stuff. Jollogy or such. That you'd find this and that in certain places. Like copper where two tectonic plates join, where ground is coloured in certain way. Stuff about meteor impact craters, ravines and such.

I don't really have heard about it anymore. Maybe they gave up? It's dug down somewhere deep? Or it's all just random and it was a waste of time in the first place.

As someeone who has willfully ignored out of game resources since I arrived on these shores...getting involved with aliens or guardians is a lesson in futility. Almost all the information ye need is outside the game which is just laughable really in this day and age.

Its why I never got involved and possibly never will...fair play to ye trying...its more than I would have done cos Im not inte3rested enough to even attempt any of it ^

One GalNet article has Ram Tah talking about the new ruins and he mentions three systems by name where to start with the search. So I went and looked them up on the galaxy map, bookmarked them and flew there. The rest of the puzzle is just driving around and shooting things.

Btw you can use the camera suite to take a look around if you want to get a quick overview of an area. Helps a lot, especially a bird's eye view to find where the pylons are supposed to rise. There are flat triangular structures in these places.

Interesting experiment. We've seen things like this in the past where Obsidian Ant has tried to do certain things without referring to external sources and I think deep down we all know that it's not currently possible. Actually strike that ... it's clearly possible, the first person to find and "solve" the Guardian ruins puzzle must have done so without referring to an external walk-through ... it's pretty obscure tho!

But you know what? I just don't have a problem with it. In the 34th century they'll still have an internet of sorts and commanders will research stuff on the internet before heading out, much like we all read the Rough Guide to San Fransisco before bumbling off out there in our "I [heart] Wah Ching" T shirts!

It'll be interesting to see what the Codex brings to the party later in the year in the way of signposts and guiding information.

Well, not recently, since you've been slacking off : https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/5a95779df2583468e803a015

(not that they'll help you much). Bizarrely there's more about this type of thing in the 'Aliens' subforum - DD is just for wittering & complaints about life, the universe & everything, which I guess was why the OP posted here.....

Good luck with Tomb Raider, report back with a review :)

When you drive around a guardian ruin huge pylons loudly emerge. You only have two buttons to interact with them, and one will work here. I can see why some would have difficulty with the ending, which I wont spoil, but this is pretty kindergarten level of complexity...

Yeah, the last step is a form fit/color match puzzle. That's something toddlers start to figure out.
