Newcomer / Intro Alliance Chieftain has rekindled my enthusiasm for this game

What a beautiful thing this is. F/Devs, thank you!! for creating a ship that provides so much fun. This ship is brilliant!. it has a great price tag, great amour, cool hardpoints, awesome Power plant and Power Dist. This is more fun than my FDL, which i now shine and take out on Sundays. Its a great all rounder before getting to the Python.

And the fastest cargo scooper in the game, great for salvage missions.

Well in creators (Kudos) :D

It's a nice ship - since they fixed the problem with the cockpit cover crumbling to dust as soon as an attacker sneezed in your direction - one of the v3 patches.
Can't remember which one.

But for some reason I can't explain I still feel more comfortable in my old Federal assault Ship.

I expect I'll get used to it.

List price is around 18 million, then their is fitting etc.

I agree a great ship and an absolute hoot to fly, never found scooping easier and the weapons placement is great.

Yep, another fast scooper is the Imperial Courier, its the SAS of salvage-quick in and quick out. Imperial Courier is as much fun as a Vulture.

I’m thinking of selling my Vulture as I’m not hugely keen on the two hardpoints and the Chieftain would seem like a natural replacement, especially if I don’t have to call out Autoglass every other day like I do with the Vulture (once a week I can handle.) I didn’t try it during the Beta as I hadn’t been playing long so just cracked on with 2.4 and don’t feel like I know too much about it other than people seeming to think it’s great fun to fly.

Although, talking of great fun to fly, like oz.grant, you pretty much have to crow bar me out of my engineered Courier.

I really like it. Before this, the FAS was my ship of choice, but it always felt a tad clumsy. The Chieftain feels great.

Full FA off, is the best of any ship I've flown. I've survived gank attempts from an Elite FAS/Python combo, and Vulture/Viper MkIV combo (to name a couple).. Point being I never felt outpaced or out hulled.

Big ships are pretty light work, with constant boost, and such great pitch.

Canopy is a lot better now, and if they fix the interdiction reticle the ship may just be perfect.

A thing that was commented on during the beta was that the Chieftain drifted a lot, now that drift has been controlled but you can still make it slide which is what makes it fun.
It has two large hard points on the centre line one pretty much at the top of the ship the other somewhat lower and further forward a little lower and forward again is the central small hard point the other two small hard points are out board of that one just below the cockpit under the ship and again on the centre line is the medium hard point so plenty of fire power with good clear arcs of fire and convergence.
The stats say it is about the equivalent of the federal Assault Shuttle others say it isn't quite as tough I haven't enough time on the FAS to comment to me it feels quicker than the FAS.
It won't have the agility of your Vulture but although like any craft you can get into power issues they aren't what design it and you will have all those extra guns.

I haven't flown a Courier since a couple of betas ago, maybe when I get round to rank chasing.

Thanks for the information, the extra hardpoints mean I could run lasers and multi cannons without going down to one weapon of each type, which as a Novice fighter appeals.

All this is just talk until I’ve built up some more credits and materials. I’m trying not to simply buy ships whenever I can and when I do, be able to engineer to a degree at the same time.

I just don't like the sound, it's sounds like some electromagnetic interference on your speaker lol.

I'm not keen on the noise. For the first time ever I've turned down ship sounds in the audio settings.

It reminds me of a place I stayed in a warzone.
They had repaired some of the plumbing by wrapping bits of Coke cans round the pipes.
Whenever you turned on the tap it would suck in air through these repairs and the while thing would buzz and whine.

Just bear in mind that the Chieftain has a significantly larger hitboox than the Vulture, and a bit slower boost speed which may become significantly slower depending on how you outfit it. You'll also be inheriting the same canopy issues as the Vulture which may be relevant if you do PvP as lots of players like to target the power distributor which is right behind the canopy. The Chieftain is a bit more adaptable to uses other than combat but if combat is your exclusive preference you might want to take a look at some of the threads comparing the Chieftain with the Federal Assault Ship. It may boil down to your preference of combat style and tactics whether you want one or the other.

I love the Chieftain too... despite my day-one experience of it's tissue-paper cockpit making it the first ship ever that would make you reconsider the "D" life support lol. But the good news is- they fixed that issue.

It still has a very heavy "feel" despite it's smaller size and damage potential. This lends itself as a GREAT trainer to the heavier ships for no-FA spin turns and engine usage. It's optional vs. a requirement... so it's a fun usage vs. life saving. I would say it is an engineering treat as with proper engineering, it has a very wide variety of combat play styles that are supported with medium to heavy engineering. It also has a few avenues of versatility outside of combat, which is also a plus.

It fills a much needed gap in price vs. performance also. And it does so in a package that doesn't resemble a space brick or space phallus. Instead, it picks a Star Wars/Star Trek-ish form. Mine is focused on mainly combat, like my Vulture and my battle-'Conda. It fits nicely in the middle of those two extremes but a bit closer to the Vulture. Before the Chieftain, it was a wider gap... with the FDL holding that midpoint prior. The Chieftain, IMO, creates a cool choice in that gap-space.
