ship progression

Hello all.
After playing for a while now going from ship to ship, there seems to be a hole in ship sizes and professions.
Sidewinder is a good starter ship but I find the mods for it are too expensive to buy, they should be a lot cheaper, so players and mix and match and get experience in ship fitting. The cost makes most skip the eagle and viper as they are combat hulls. As it stands most players save up get a hauler save up buy a cobra mk 3.
I think there should be a ship half the cargo and the same fire power as a cobra mk 3 costing about 80,000. With the same jump range of a cobra.

There's at least 15 more ships coming I think. I would also expect more upgrades and for these all to be balanced for release.

Yeah I'm under the impression that because of the current gap of missing ships the cost of the 'larger' ships is greatly reduced otherwise they'd be completely out of reach. But as more get added it will span out a bit.

I can't wait to see what FD has in store for us... No really, I'm VERY impatient

Also, the final idea is not so much a linear ship progression, as different ships/loadouts for different jobs... we aren't quite there yet, of course.

ship parts cost the same for that part no matter where you go. You can put a kill warrant scanner on any ship, but it will still be 18k.

So basically you want a Viper with more cargo space and a larger range that costs 15,000 less? No freaking way is that a good suggestion. If we were talking perhaps the firepower of a sidewinder, or perhaps an eagle, then that's more reasonable.

There is a world of Elite out there and I would be disappointed if they don't get a lot of it in ED. We're seeing maybe 15 percent of it not including the galaxy. Sure there will be more ships but some of the past ones are really dated to the times and the capabilities of the computer systems. They won't play or even look well in 2014.

Some as the Python Clipper needs to be in the game with the working rotating thrusters (as in the TV show Firefly...they probably got the idea from Elite) as many got attached to it (so do it right or don't do it at all). Meanwhile ED has added new ships which for us old Elite players makes the game even more exciting.

Back then there were lots of upgrades including Military Engines which could seriously increase your range. Your Eagle with it's speed could then work military courier missions.

Then there is obtaining the Elite status, ranks in the military, and probably a lot of new ideas that can now be implemented with 2014 hardware which was not doable in years past. Thus lots of things to work on.

So there will hopefully be a lot more items besides ships forthcoming. But this is Beta just getting everything to work right and we have the basic ships to do that. I'm a Trader/Explorer up to 23 million+ credits so far in about 20 hrs game play. I look for trader problems. If I had those military engines I'd report on explorer problems.

Here's some places I'd like to see soon and they are in the Galaxy Map! Distance is from I Bootis...

System: Sol
Distan: LY 41.602

System: Lave
Distan: LY 119.488

LOL...I and many many others have waited 19 years! I'm thrilled we have Beta!

Thanks for the replies,
I dont think ship mods should cost the same across
the ship ranges, different ships different fittings.
It there any talk of getting the tail gunner position back?

The cost of hull upgrades varies depending on the size of the ship (and presumably tech level as last I looked Viper armour was silly price), but other things stay the same price because they are discrete items. If you buy a C4 Pulse Laser from the shop it doesn't matter which ship you put it on.
(Though it might be interesting if there was a small "adaptation charge" covering the work required to install the part. I like the way that some of the ships have got wires trailing around in the cockpit - it's clear these are lived-in ships!)

I'm not sure where the Adder will fit in, because the stats and even basic design purpose of the ships have changed quite a lot between different versions of Elite, but the Adder would usually count as something like a better-armed, slightly more maneouverable Hauler, it's a smuggler's ship.

I'm hoping for a Lakon Type-12 that's the exact same size as the slot and twice the length of the Type-9.

I need a bigger ship! :D

They need something like the Anaconda as well, but with the cockpit at the front not the back. That thing is awful to fly in a rift :/

there will be 25 playable ships in gamma, we have now 8, do the math ;)

we haven't even seen one third of all ships so far.

Hull upgrades...Been there and done that as in the mirrored surface cost:

Cobra Mk III: 156,000
Lakon Type 9: 505,460

Neither is really needed if you are only dealing with NPCs.

Lakon Type 12? You can do 910,360 credits per one round trip in a Lakon Type 9 from LHS 3262 to Nang Ta-khian (via Acihaut), back to Acihaut, then to LHS 3262 (via DN Draconis). Never just pick two systems then go back and forth. Think out of the box. That is what makes this game awesome!

You know, I didn't even think about why that is, but now that you mention it, it does make sense. I mean, if this were reality, it wouldn't matter (and the manufacturer wouldn't care) WHAT you did with a C4 pulse laser. The cost to make it is still the same, because all C4 lasers are the same. It doesn't matter what ship you put it on, or what carnival you take it to, etc.
