Gorgeous, yeah. Beauty in and of itself isn't what drives me to explore, though. It's finding interesting stuff. Cool encounters. Witcher just didn't click for me on that level.
I think I'm ticking kinda like you. TW3 blew me away with the setting, combat (mostly sword) kinda clicked with me and I liked the story and generally side-quests. But the open world? No, didn't really invite me to explore on my own.
It was lacking landmarks and lookout points and the woods were in general mostly in the way to overlook the place.
I deactivated the question marks on the map and mostly the quests led me through the world well enough.
AN open world I enjoy is more like where I can set my own daily goal, be sure to meet some "fun" and think about how to place the flare for the artillery strike best. Boy, I LOVED that feature in FO4. Essentially I did the settlements just so I could cover ALL DER MAP with artillery bombardment. For the giggles.
And in Skyrim it was all about Khajit and showing the furless who's boss without them knowing what hit them.
Oblivion was more about the story-side again - not that great world for hiking.
Morrowind was huge. So were the possibilities. It was sandboxy what you could do with the skills and crafting and alchemy and I turned it to 11.
All these games (apart Oblivion - I dint finish after the xteenth portal raid.) I usually play once (story) and often begin a new character without really intending to go through the story again. Instead I go hiking or mess about with artillery strikes or steal from all the pockets.
