I actually had a PS2 game where in the later chapters you had to take the war to Mars, and in doing so, all fighter jets were retrofitted for space flight.

Flying an A-10 under the surface of the red planet whilst destroying subterranean ballistic missiles... Man, that was an interesting experience.

It was actually one of the best flight action games I've ever played.

All sorts of whacky things. One of the main characters, a stubborn old man, refused to fly jets. Yes. He flew a P-51 Mustang against fighter jets such as Sukhoi's and F-22.

Deadly Skies 3, IIRC. I regret selling it. Visually, it was actually really good on the aircraft models, and each plane had a unique cockpit.

Including the flying yellow rocket which threw grenades and had airbrakes in the form of sneakers.

I'm not making this up.

FDL is most like it, given the huge hard point. I wish the huge multi cannon were more like a chain gun though, instead of a cannon battery.

Yeah the Federal Dropship is underrated. I just love flying that ship any chance I get. It looks awesome and has coffee makers. Even better, if you equip that ship right it is hard as nails. With engineering I can even keep 1 x cl3 and 2 x cl2 g5 efficient beams lit for a long time. It can absorb a ton of punishment as well. Great ship!

Although not the most combat oriented of the three FDS, FAS, FGS, I must admit that the Dropship comes closest in resembling the A-10 Warthog.
I also agree that the Dropship is way under rated, I never gave the ship much thought but I'm using it as a material prospecter since a while and it's fantastic.
I like it's looks too, it can dish out some real pain and take a beating.
When properly engineered the FDS is a true workhorse.
