Hunting Animations

Before I say anything I know this has been talked about in other discussions but I really feel the need to talk about this myself. The hunting animations are looking "ok" so far but we can't really judge as there has only been footage of one carnivore. The part that concerns me the most is the animation shown when the Ceratosaurus kills a guest. It's very clunky in the sense that it will chase groups of people around until eventually the animation begins where a person stops running and just stands in fright when the Ceratosaurus then roars at the person causing him/ her to stumble over and finally be eaten and this is the only animation that occurs which also applies when it hunts goats. This means it is very predictable to know when someone will die because as I said the person stops running. I preferred the variety that JPOG had where the dinosaur will either chase after someone then scoop them up and thrash them around or will stand still in fright then be grabbed. I hope that because it was an early build that they add more animations for each dinosaur to make it more fluid.

If anyone can confirm whether there will be more animations that would be great because i can't rest without knowing.

You will eventually crash some time cause we won't know a thing for sure till we see the game on June 12th.

However silly it may sounds, this is the ONLY reason holding me back from pre-ordering the game.

Before starting my nagging arguments over again, please note that I'm well-aware that the things we seen is only a development build and that the animation is designed in such to involve motions.

If it's only a minor bug, as claimed by most anti-whining fans, I'll certainly appreciate if Frontier can shows us a simple short clip (a species profile etc) featuring a FLUENT chasing-hunting-down scene. My full loyalty will be earned as such.

Otherwise, if it's a bigger thing (as me and a few others have speculated) that might have to do with heavy reliance on Cinematic Animation, please DO NOT double-down in that direction. Please step back and consider the inclusion of Real Time Animation (as in JPOG). Better yet, a blending model would be perfect.

Below are some pros and cons comparing Cinematic Animation with Real Time Animation:-

Cinematic Animation

Pros

-Gorgeous, In-Sync, complex animations
-Hardware resource friendly

Cons

-Repetitive, Robotic (unless with enormous efforts)
-Constrained in its nature
-Animator resource demanding
-Seemingly impossible to involve more than 2 dinosaurs fighting

Real Time Animation

Pros

-Freedom with motions
-Its simplicity gives space for varieties
-Animator resource friendly
-Much easier to accommodate gang fighting with more than 2 dinosaurs

Cons

-Not In-Sync, simple animations
-Hardware resource demanding

As said many times earlier, decade-old Sports game did pretty darn good in blending animation (between Real-Time and Cinematic). They had no problems dealing with objects vastly different in sizes (a 5 footer with a 7 footer) and Dynamic, Time-Sensitive body contacts were never an issue. I recommend Frontier to take a look at them if necessary.

The more I watch the dinosaur AI and attack animations, the more unimpressed I become.

This is why I try not to watch too much. Because if I were to keep looking at things with a big focus you begin to see the things you don't like instead of enjoying it in generall.

For example movie trailers or game trailers. They are always put well together to draw attention. Even though the feeling you get while watching it usually is different from actual scenes

I know exactly what you mean. It is difficult though; I've never been as excited for a game in my life.

The other thing is that we know that what we saw is a work in progress and will change over the lifespan of the game. That is essentially while I feel it ok to voice concerns about these sorts of things. If you get me haha

Why worry about it? We haven't seen a finished game. It was obvious that the demo was not complete. I doubt they would be leaving the animation so clunky. That is most likely one of the things they are polishing up right now before release.

It seems to me like there are two extremes with people interested in this game. There are those who think this game is doomed (I am certainly not one of them). And there are those who are determined to be so overly confident about the game, despite that so far, what we have seen has been fairly underwhelming or at the very least missing some pretty fundamental features.

And then there are those individuals who neither think it's doomed nor think what we've seen so far is utterly fantastic.

People who care about this game are worried. And by worried, I don't mean that we all think the game is going to be bad. I simply mean that we want it to be the best game it can be. That means we will be critical about features that are unfinished. The fact that what we've seen so far is a Dev build is irrelevant. I'll say that again; it is irrelevant. The reason for that is that it's ALL we have to go off and it was by no means spectacular. If you think otherwise, that's great and thats up to you. I'm not here to change your mind and nor should I be. But likewise, we are entitled to be worried and express our worries about a game that so far seems to be extremely unpolished and is only a month and a bit away from release.

Commenting on these posts just seems to be a waste of your time if all you're doing is repeating yourself a thousand times attempting to convince people that it's just a Dev build. We know it's a Dev build. No one is saying it's not a Dev build. However, we are still entitled to worry about the game that we have a lot of excitement invested in.

Very well said!!! [up]

Despite whining all the time by myself, I hope people know that I actually like this game very much!!

I'm just trying to do everything I can to make this better!

I'm not overly confident but I'm sure I will like this game more than enough to have me play it for many hours.
I also am not someone who expects things that are to far fetched and from what I've seen so far in the demo made me pre purchase the game.
Knowing that I will have a product that is also supported after launch and I'm fairly certain that we will see various upgrades and dlc's like with Planet Coaster.

But why worry about a version 0.3 of a game? We have no idea when that build was actually made, and we do know that they have been working with the youtubers that have played it to try and make it better. I just think it is silly to stress about details that we literally know next to knowing about really. Do I think the game will be perfect, not at all, but it will be better than anything we have had in years. As well it isn't like the 90s where once you had a game that was the finished product, they can do updates and dlc based on player feedback once the game is launched. I guess I am just not stressing like most people since what I saw in the demos was not a finished product and I have full faith in frontier as they are an amazing company.

haha i'm with you, because I haven't been this excited for a game in years. I don't even care about RDR2 coming out later this year at this point haha.

I wouldn't say it's been underwhelming. The game looks great and the Dinosaurs look really good. Just some of the animations are a little off. I preordered the game of course cause I will play it anyway. I also have issues with the game and some choices Frontier made. Like the lack of any real significant blood and meat involved in the Carnivores eating. I don't know what the Herbivores eating looks like, I am sure it's fine cause it's just plants. But there is more involved with the carnivores. The lack of a day and night cycle across the islands. This really bothered me when I heard about and it still kind of does. Though I am willing to give Frontiers idea a shot and see how it goes. Also the lack of an official response on the inclusion of a sand box mode also bothers me. It's all left to speculation and people putting clues together.

But at the end of the day all we can do is hope for the best. Also to rely on the reputation of Frontier as a developer. That they will do their very best to make the best game they can and fix everything they can. Sitting around and worrying about it all the time won't help. I would say if you are that unsure just hold off on buying the game till you find out. That's really the only way to deal with the issue. Wait till things get fixed first. games should work on release but that's not how things are anymore.

Is it the one that we saw the final version of the game? No, right? I do not understand the concerns when it is seen that the demo was an alpha with enough failures.

If when the game is released we see the same mistakes then we can really complain. For now we just have to wait ... And that they take out in the profile of species dinos that we have not seen please xD

I might be alone with my standpoint, but I like Frontiers hunting system more than that of Operation Genesis. The biting and Dinosaur falling over attack animations were pretty lame in Operation Genesis. Although the new one can look clunky, the animation itself is way superior in my opinion.

Yes, but what we saw in the demo is all we have to go off. Thats why the only meaningful discussion we can have about it is based off what we've seen so far. Would you say that what you saw in terms of the hunting mechanics and visitor AI etc blew you away? If not, like me and the vast majority of people, then it's reasonable to talk about it knowing full well that it's more than likely that these will be fixed either before released or after.

But is that the bar we are setting? I agree with you; but are we really comparing a modern AAA to a game that game out like 15 years ago? Of course it should be better in literally every aspect.

Haha I feel like you misunderstand me or I didn't express myself well.

I'm not sitting around worrying. The game looks, sounds and is a wonderful game already.

However, the fact that there are features missing that you feel are fairly vital to a game like this, on top of unfinished features shown in a demo is essentially the definition of underwhelmed. I suppose it's a dramatic word to use but I do think it's apt. The feeling I get when I watch the gameplay is: 'wow. Oh but I wish this was included and that was fixed'. It's so close to being the perfect that it IS worth talking about things we would like added etc.

I know you agree with that as you've been very vocal about the features you'd like added. I think we agree about basically everything, I just used some pretty expressive language that made me out to seem negative when that's just not the case.

That to me makes no sense. I'm certainly not complaining, I just think it's useful to discuss the features we would like (there is almost 400 posts in a thread about this specifically) and the features that we think need work. How else are the devs going to know? Obviously they aren't going to do every and ag the end of the day it's their game; but they seem very receptive to us as fans and I think that's really important to have a dialogue with them.

I was personally happy with it and have no real complaints, In the actually build that frontier showed off there was a huge improvement in the Guest AI and as well showed a great variety of guests. As for the fighting animation I was impressed by it and if that was the final product, I wouldn't complain about it.
