Homeworld Remastered is HARD :)

Its on sale at gog for like 9$ and im having a tough time with it. I the problem is just my aging reflexes or the idiosyncratic interface.
Made it through mission 4 by the skin of my teeth with not enough RU in my pocket to build much of anything and mission 5 i have failed twice. I am having fun with it though :)
Anybody got any tactical tips?

Homeworld original was hard too.

It's been a while since I've played it, but if I recall, you need to simply plan ahead.

Salvage everything, steal what you can, rather than destroy it.

I remember in one play through, most of my fleet was made up of stolen ships. :D

That could have been Homeworld 2 though...

Like I said. It's been awhile. :D

Love Homeworld (the original, disliked the others).
I'm halfway through the rerelease, as I don't want to burn through it.
But yeah, steal everything, lay waste to enemies.
Using pause button required, esp in later scenes when attacked from all sides, as well as the asteroid field level.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Yeah I recall being terrible at Homeworld too. You really did have to scrape and salvage and steal your way through as I recall.

My favorite tactic is to have 3 or 4 dreadnaughts cloaked (extra cloak field drones "protecting" for when the active ones need recharging), and obliterating everything. AI cannot fire as the ships appear/dissapear too quickly.

If anything, due to the lack of fuel the game is a lot easier than it was.

A tip for later in the game: beware of gravity generators.

it's a fantastic game. i don't think the remastered version is harder than the original, at least for the first half (haven't played through the whole remastered edition yet).

single best advice i can give is watch out for your fleet, always repair it and never squander it. you start every new stage with what you had left on the previous one. also, as soon as you can capture as many enemy vessels as you can. this way you will hit your fleet cap and everything will be easier from there.

also, plan your skirmishes right, always fight with the advance, use formations. and salvage!

Not a fan of not being able to build from stolen carrier anymore....
Also, I miss the fuel consumption that req'd ships to dock and refuel, thereby also being repaired.

Good tips everybody thanks. Its a great game especially for the current price, I had no idea the learning curve would be like this.
Strategy games are a new thing for me.

The Homeworld series is my only love when it comes to space RTS.

I used to do skirmishes just for the pleasure of observing the ships move against the awesome backdrop and see the engine trails and weapon's fire and listen to the music and soundeffects.

The ship design in the Homeworld games is just plain awesome and superior to any other space game.

I hope we will see another Homeworld space RTS someday. Just imagine what these devs can do on current machines.

Tips:
Always harvest and salvage anything you can and try to capture as many enemy ships as possible.
Also save regularly :).
Redo a mission if you think you might get more out of it, with less losses or more captured ships.

The remastered version is based on the later HW2 engine and does not work as intended IMHO: read some reviews about the ship targeting especially Ion Cannons.

The original (in the bundle?) has better game play.

As for tips: the salvage corvette is king: distract larger ships with wings of fighters then steal them and build a fleet ;)

One of the greatest games ever!

Not sure how the missions work in the remastered version, but there was one mission in the original, something like the 5th or around there, where it was a nightmare to win... until you discover that the game spawned enemies based on how many ships you took through to that mission.

So, you go back to the previous mission and at the end only take through your capital ship and the NPCs get nothing extra. This gives you plenty of time to build up your forces without being attacked and transformed a super hard mission into a much easier one.

I believe you're thinking about HW2. HW had no such mechanic, the missions/chapters were always static.

Oh man... really? Lol!
Stuff like that explains why I had such a hard time, lol.

Or I just suck. Distinct possibility.

One of the best games ever made in my opinion. Ive completed all of them more than once. Multiplayer is fantastic.

Ive always hoped that one day someone would make a 4x Space empire game but with a homeworld rts combat system.

Ah, yes, HW2.

It was indeed Hw2. Actually it was a lot harder in the vanilla release of the game. For instance in the mission where you release Cpt Soban, I had to destroy 11 battlecruisers before reaching the base (and they didn't come one by one or alone...).

It was patched a bit later.

This is good news. I played the original HW and the subsequent versions and it was much fun. I have a gog account so I may venture over there and get the newest. I've played the heck out of three games the past few years and its time for something different.

Around the same time I was playing HW, I also bought Sins of a Solar Empire. It was fun too but it was different from HW in many ways but very challenging. I still have the SoaSE disk. It may be time to dig it out too.

I got all the versions, and yes they are all very good and you can play them many times.
