PC games with a great story narrative?

If you want a dark dark story... with a good FPS game look for "Spec Ops: The Line"
It kept me thinking about the story of the game a week after i finished it

System Shock 2. Dated but who cares about graphics when the game play is sublime. You really have to read everything you find because the game offers no waypoints or markers. For the superficial among you there are graphical mods to increase the eye candy. Unmissable game. If you haven't played it you will see where most single player FPS games got their influence from. Bioshock and Dead Space are obvious ones.

That one is really a heavy hitter. Can't say at a first glance too. It's just your generic shooter with the most uninspiring gameplay.

Been looking at the far cry series, but I don’t really know if they got a good story behind the games, a good story keeps you playing the game and immerse yourself into, the game world.

GTA actually got excellent stories, watchdogs mafia, max pain and many more is made around a heavy storyline. Actually I really got annoyed when Joe in mafia 2 got whacked, a good story makes you care about the characters.

Go back and relive the HalfLife series....still one of the best storylines.

Don't forget the addon Blue Shift, where you play from the side of the security officers (Barnie)!

As Lokvette mentioned...Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light. Dodgy English translation of Russian script for the voice acting...but I loved both of them.

Another vote for the original Dues Ex.

Also not seen mention of King of Dragon Pass yet. Not traditional story telling as such, but easily the best 'story creator' i've played in a PC game.

Spec Ops: The Line

That one really looks like it could be a winner, I checked out some YT videos and it look like a good story, with some Arcadia game mechanics. However when the story carries the game I really don't mind if the game play is a bit arcady.

Just finished Life is Strange. It's a 5-chapter adventure game. It begins with what may look like your standard teenagers-and-their-problems cheesy tale, but quickly escalates into an amazing story centered around time travel and moral choices.

Loved it!

Yep. Life is Strange is amazing. I like DontNod in general. I loved Remember Me, also and they are working on a new game called Vampyr which could even come out this year!

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
It's only a short game (12 hours perhaps), but it has got some of the most intense characterisation that I've ever played in a game. That final battle... the screams of defiance, the music, the narration...

I've been playing a lot of Assassin's Creed Origins recently. I kind of like the storyline running underneath it, as well as the beautiful recreation of Egypt in 49BC.

I have already pre-ordered Vampyr. Not a massive fun of that setting since it was cheesied by Twilight, Diaries and other Buffies, but since it's DontNod (plus I've watched a few videos and liked what I was seeing), I'm hoping for a dark, serious setting and a good gameplay. Last good vampire game I played was Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

Remember Me - didn't click. I may come back to that game. Didn't know it was also made by those guys.

They are also working on Life is Strange 2 apparently.

Another story-rich game series is Shadowrun series. I played 2 out of 4 games and the story lines were really well written. It's a weird mix of fantasy, SF and cyberpunk, so it may be strange to get used to, but once you accept the setting and focus on the story, they're really amazing games to play.

I can also recommend Dishonored 1 and 2 - one of the best story lines in video gaming in the recent years.

+1 for Shadowrun games. Played them all. Love those tactical turn based games, mixed with RPG elements.

If you like those, you may enjoy Wasteland 2. Instead of cyberpunk, you get a post-apocalyptic setting. http://store.steampowered.com/app/240760/Wasteland_2_Directors_Cut/

So many great suggestions in thread I struggled to come up with something else but did. There is a little known game called Hostile Waters. Epic.
Here is the intro..
Absolute classic game. Carrier Command clone done right. Not to be confused with Dangerous Waters *ahem*. Someone I know bought Dangerous Waters thinking it was Hostile Waters ;)
