Traveller-style RPG for PC

I used to play a lot of Traveller as a kid at "Wargames Club" at school (I know...), and as I've always enjoyed playing a good old fashioned RPG on the PC, I was wondering if there's anything out there that's similar in scope and design to, say, Pillars of Eternity, but with a space/sci fi setting?

Google has chucked up a couple of suggestions but nothing that looks like the sort of thing I'm after, which is basically a big rambling old-school RPG set in space.

Anyone got any ideas?

Not sure anyone has made one. I would love to see a pillars of eternity but Hard Sci Fi type game.

Me too!

Is isometric a must? Otherwise Mass Effect 1-3, Knights of the Old Republic 1-2.

Pretty much - I've played ME1 & 2, but I don't see them first and foremost as RPGs a la Pillars/Baldur's Gate/Planescape etc. Space seems such a natural canvas for RPG shenanigans I'm just surprised it's never been given the computer RPG treatment.

Funny, isometric doesn't do anything for me. :) I prefer the full 3D presentation. ME is closer to a shooter than an RPG. Try KoTOR.

Just a quick revive of the thread to say I'm having a blast with Stellar Tactics - great game, sort of Fallout-ish with a storyline, random missions, character customisation and lots of tactical combat.

Try Shadowrun games. They are not strictly space games, but more of a weird combo of fantasy, sci-fi and cyberpunk. Based on a table-top RPG. I was not familiar with that universe until I played the computer games. It was a bit odd to mix fantasy and SF at first, but once you get used to a strange setting, they are very very good games.

I played Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall and both had a good story line, memorable characters and very interesting setting.

SR: Hong Kong and SR Chronicles: Boston Lockdown are waiting in the queue to be played, as I'm actually my first playthrough of Pillars of Eternity :)

I got Stellar Tactics last night based on recommendations in this thread. It's great so far. Kind of feels like the original Fallout but in space

Stop tempting me! :D

It's early access anyway and I don't buy EA games, so I may wait until it's a finished game that I can play from start to end.

Same here normally, but the dev seems committed to it (just released another 1.1GB patch today). I've been playing the hell out of it and having a great time.

Nice one. I've put it on my watchlist for now. I've seen dedicated devs before... Those games are stll in EA 2 years on and didn't see any updates, so I'm still sceptical.

And how is it, content-wise?
If I understand it it's and open world but little more story driven? How does the Early Access thing works, there? Are there parts of the game inaccessible?

I'd like to try it, but I wouldn't want to be running into walls too often. I have another one big game under continuous development already. :D

Well it's currently locked to one system, and if you play the suggested story mode (
escaping from the generation ship Dauntless
) it takes you around various parts of the system, but it has a mission generator and mining mechanics which will keep you busy until the dev gets round to unlocking FTL and opening up the universe to players.

I've finished the main story now but I'm embarking on a mining career to raise some cash to
buy the FTL which a certain character offers you
. Of course, a mining career means you have to equip your ship with appropriate technology which is a whole other rabbit hole to fall down.

It's an impressive piece of work so far and the dev has a well articulated roadmap but as noted by others, it is early access, so the usual caveats apply.
