There must be some Internet Law that describes how long forum threads degenerate into this sort of morass of willful misunderstanding. Not an inch must be yielded by either side. Fortunately FDev don't think the game is perfect as is and Quality of Life improvements do tend to do exactly that - improve the quality of the game, generally by removing inconvenience or roadblocks. I'll eat Punished Mobius' eyepatch if this is the last QoL change they make to engineering and Mat gathering.
