PC games with a great story narrative?

See the Amiga games are still perfectly playable to me nowadays. In fact, I replay Dune 1 every couple of years, just because I love this game so much.

But when I recently tried System Shock (never played it before) - even though it was Enhanced Edition, I couldn't stand looking at the ugly graphics. And don't even mention the first Alone in the Dark game - that is a prime example of early 3D game that is absolutely horrible to look at today :D

It's dated but considering it's SHODAN it's worth it.

On very hard the combat was actually very good and tactical. You have to exploit the weaknesses of the machines and approach encounters carefully targeting specific parts. But the story was the star in the game. Good thing thing they hired John Gonzales for the story, who worked on Fallout New Vegas.

I don't really understand the hype around HZD. I had some expectations but I only see a mediocre game with cliches all over the place.
Also, despite the challenging combat on different levels, combat is still same and very boring after a little while.

I don't mind old 3D graphics. Today you can even pimp it up by using DSR, forced AntiAliasing or HD texture mods. If the game is fun, like Anachronox, I can still play it.

I don't have a TV or a spare 200 bucks quid. "Just 200" is very relative in todays world.

When I was young, money was everything, I wanted new cars, motorcycles, I even got myself an airplane and everything that goes with it!
Nowadays I don't care, I drive an old car, I look like a surfer, we eat as much natural food as we can, so when my daughter comes along and begs for money, it's actually my only big spending account for the moment, my son travels around the globe doing ??? probably a ski hobo somewhere in Switzerland by now :D so that's it.

My point, when you don't have it, you need it, when you got it, you don't need it :D

Haha, quite true, but I don't actually need a console or a TV. It's a choice, not a compulsion :)

That doesn't change the fact that 200 quid is still a significant spending in my current personal situation. (BTW, I'm an old punkrocker, I looked and lived a mess all my life and never really cared for material possessions).

I really liked the main character, and I liked how the story developed. I found it very immersive and liked the idea of "rebooting" humanity.

Just in case no one know what HZD is...

I must agree, the dated graphics just makes it hard to watch, we're getting to spoiled with good graphics, in the old days most games was made with a 8 bit pallet and we where happy :D

nostalgia input at maximum! :D

So I've finished Farcry 3 and the story was pretty good, also you get to choose the end of the story is something i like.

38 hours, and $5 is a pretty good $/playtime ratio.

Not going to explore the game world, I was only interested in the story so if I wanted there would still be many hours of playtime in the game.

If you have PS3 then The Last of Us is a must of you haven't already played it. :)

I never played it, but I suppose it is similar to the Uncharted series. Back then I've got Uncharted (one of the late ones) as a free PS+ title - while it was nice to play it once, the path you can play on is so narrow it reminded me to a rail shooter, and there were just too many 'hollywoodistic', over the top survival moments.

Edit: Having said that, one of the best story driven game was the May Payne 3. Yes, it is as narrow as a rail shooter too, but what a shooter it is! And the story is just so good, probably the best Rockstar story even though the bar is obviously very high.

Nah, it is way more serious than uncharted!

If Uncharted is Hollywood, then The Last of Us is indie.
In comparison to Uncharted, it's a much more convincing game in many ways. It's not a particularly ground breaking game, but what it tries to do, it does it almost perfectly.
As with nearly all games, it's not perfect, and the gameplay before logic kind of principal in the game can be annoying and might take you out of the immersion a little. It's still on rails, but it's actually ok.
But what you always will remember are the characters and how they bond. It's unforgettable.
It's one of those rare games you wish you could forget so you could get the full experience again.

Farcry 5 seems like a good game with a story, however still a bit pricey, and the story seems like one of those you just need to get on with the flow and not think to much about it.
