[WIP] Engineering Materials Quick Guide - please help me finish it.

Hello all, here is a guide I am working on. I could use some assistance finishing it.

Currently I have most of the sections filled out. Mostly I need suggestions on better ways to obtain the materials that are currently listed as 'trade up' or USS farms (ugh).

Also, if you find some incorrect data, then let me know either in this thread or via PM.

The goal of this guide is to give a non-RNG-based method to find any engineering material. Some of them are quite grindy, but they're all non-RNG where possible. The guide also shows what materials are used for in engineering recipes and experimental effects, so you can make an informed decision as to which materials you can trade safely, and which you want to keep.

Here are the details for each method listed.

1) Dav's Hope: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...ED-List-of-Materials-at-DAV-S-Hope(Pictorial) This is an abandoned base that contains materials you can simply scoop up using your SRV's cargo rack. The base also has a scannable data point.

2) Isinor: obtain the Isinor permit by doing data missions from any station owned by the faction 'Chapter of Isinor'. Once you have the permit, enter the system and head to 'Unauthorised Installation'. There you will find two rival gangs fighting it out with Cutters, Corvettes, Condas and other ships. You can scan these ships to get scan data drops, then log out and log back in, and repeat the process ad infinitum.

3) Distribution Centres: Search for systems in the OUTBREAK state. In these systems you can sometimes find a 'Distribution Centre'. Enter this instance to find many ships making deliveries to larger ships, then hyperspacing out. Scan their wakes. I recommend you bring a larger scanner or one with the fast scan engineering upgrade. Grind this for as long as you can stand, because Distribution Centres can sometimes be hard to find.

4) Shaw Prospect: this is an easy way to get hold of certain data such as Modified Embedded Firmware, although it's extremely grindy. Simply run between all the data points, scanning them. You can run this on any type of settlement base, this is just one easy example. Shaw Prospect is located in the NEBTETE system at body A 3 A (near Korzun Gateway on the system map).

5) USS Farms: these are the worst by far, the idea is to enter a system in the BOOM state, fly into deep space, then wait for High Grade Emissions to spawn. Enter them, and take the items. Do not bother with anything that's not a High Grade Emission. There are many USS farming guides out there so I won't bother going into detail about it.

6) Conflict Zones: I have an existing guide here: https://goo.gl/vqM9AK which explains how to find Thermic Alloys reliably. PROBLEM: it appears Galnet no longer lists current wars. Anyone have a reliable way to determine what systems have conflict zones in them?

Biotech Conductors, Exquisite Focus Crystals, Modified Embedded Firmware can all be obtained five at a time from missions (when Allied, if you can get Elite-ranked missions of that type). Good types for this would be
- wing assassinations
- wing cargo
- solo high-value cargo deliveries (Extraction economies are best)
- surface scan missions
- long-range passenger missions
As you get five at a time, and some of these missions are pretty easy to complete quickly (especially the solo high value cargo ones) this is likely to be much quicker than trading up from other items. (I can recommend plenty of good locations for these missions in or around Colonia ... you'll have to find your own in the Sol bubble)

Proto Light Alloys, rather than trading up, just go to a HazRES or a CZ for a bit - so many different high-end combat ships drop them in decent quantities that you won't be short of them. Same with Refined Focus Crystals. This will also get you a decent supply of Proprietary Composites and in a CZ also Polymer Capacitors.

Classified Scan Databanks you can get from scanning authority ships. The catch is that to scan an authority ship you must be at best Neutral with the controlling faction - if you're Cordial or above they come pre-scanned and you can't get the data.

G5 manufactured in general can be obtained from Anaconda kills, though you don't get to choose the sort. Stacking Elite data courier missions and only completing the ones which don't attract enemies can get you a constant stream of Anacondas to kill.

non-RNG sources are the only ones I'm willing to put in the guide.

  • That means mission rewards aren't acceptable.
  • Proto Light Alloys available from CZ - that's a good point, probably easier to farm them that way.
  • CSD from authority ships: again, this is too RNG, unless you can recommend a place that has static authority ships that aren't at risk of being allied to CMDRs.
  • Finding Condas to kill generally is fine, but I'd rather have non-RNG solutions. The CZ guide I posted does provide a way to find easy-to-kill Condas, though.

Thanks for your suggestions.

+1 rep for your efforts. Will compose another reply with some stuff for you in a few minutes.

I do have 2 suggestions for you,if it helps :
Use Google Sheets, much more user friendly than the forum tables.
Once you have enough people noticing your thread & contributing, you could ask it to be moved to the GUIDES section. That way it won't get lost after 1 day.

Addendum to your #2 --->>> ABNORMAL COMPACT EMISSION DATA : Convoy Beacon (a permanent POI) at the planet Maodun in Isinor system, scan the 3 ships, log, repeat. Takes 30 secs per run.

Yes, I've been meaning to add this in. It doesn't work for me because I'm allied with the ships ;-)

As for USSs, I'm not a big fan of them and really I'm looking for alternatives rather than USS data. Thanks anyway, though.

Authority ships: it won't be the same system for any particular commander, but supercruise has plenty of authority Anacondas. Pick any high security system with neutral rep, scan in supercruise, then drop to normal space and re-enter supercruise to get some fresh ones. Checkpoint POIs in Lockdown state might be good, too, perhaps? Some surface settlements have security ships on landing pads, so relog-and-rescan there? (I think that's where my only CSDs came from)
(To be honest, I'd just get MEF from missions and trade across if I needed large quantities of CSDs, because that would probably be faster)

Mission rewards: I would view these as *far* less random than some other things. In the right system(s) there is no shortage of these missions, and they guarantee the particular materials ... whereas a "distribution centre" signal source you could in theory scan wakes for an hour and get no DWEs, or hang around in supercruise and find no HGEs, or scan Isinor for ages and not get particular data types.

Oh, on the "finding wars" question... use of the Civil War+War state filter on Galmap will find *some* of them - the ones where the system controlling faction is involved. If you're not picky about the sort of war, that's probably good enough, though there's likely a war between two non-controlling factions closer than that. No easy way to find those other than by checking the individual system maps, checking the local faction status at a station to see if any of them have a war somewhere else, or just keeping an eye out for CZs while collecting the other materials...

I'm using Google Sheets but I don't know how to create a public copy for anyone to see. So I just copied and pasted it into here instead. Shrug.

The last time I went searching for Thermics this way, using the galaxy map was an entirely unreliable way to find Conflict Zones. That's why I created the guide in the first place: using Galnet's public list of warring systems proved a reliable way of finding CZs.

White text? I haven't used any white text

Automatic color is white on dark forum themes.

You're missing Site 426, Exploration camp C-NO4 and pranged Anaconda in Orere for materials. Maybe Upsilon Phoenicis lava spouts too. With those and material traders you won't need much planetary scooting if at all.

For data, you should be able to collect planety by doing planetary scans but if you're short there's a tool for that - ED Pathfinder.

Not trying to diminish your efforts cause it's nice to have it all in one place, just saying - you are 2 years or so late.

How about https://eddb.io/system?r=11663&t=64 and select again for wars? Obviously the "reference system" is wherever you are at the moment

I tried using EDDB.io as a reference last time and it didn't work, I will have to test this again to see if it's more reliable now. Thanks for the suggestion, anyway.

I'm not aware of any of these, aside from the crashed Conda which isn't currently relevant to the guide as it doesn't include raw materials yet.

Can you give any details as to which materials are obtainable from Site 426 and Exploration Camp C-NO4?

Sod scanning planets, need a faster method than that.

i have got "Atypical Encryption Archives" from scanning the saterlites at the Science Insalation (San Tu)

Haven't seen this before. Can you repeatedly scan them?

Yes, satellites can be re-scanned. The ones I use are at Evans Port in Parutis. Atypicals were frequent, as were open symmetric keys. I forget what else.

Point 3 of original OP stated that distribution centres were in Outbreak systems? They're in Famine systems. Also need to be within 1000ls to see them.

Adaptive Encryptors Captures: I sometimes get from planetary scan missions. The missions themselves are a pain at the moment, don't work all the time if you take more than one at the same time. Previously, I'd just been trading up for these by collecting lots of Atypicals from the satellites instead. Probably get them from settlement runs as well, but I don't go to that effort.

Classified Scan Fragments I'm pretty sure I picked these up from the Convoy beacon in Isinor. Can't confim as I have a PC and XB account. Got those on XB, so don't have log history.

I'm guessing you don't already have the 3.0 scavenger spreadsheet? I fear you're mostly duplicating effort: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...RsDxfAcQa7cBq0YUIFy3m2NII/edit#gid=1438475835

Also EDEngineer. It will list all the materials/data/raw in category format, selecting one shows the engineer recipes/experimentals/synthesis they're used for. Hovering over shows where you got them and how many. Of varying help as it only lists the previous 5 systems, and how many (e.g. may have been in civil war, now it isn't. May have been 5 visits, but only shows a total per system)

As an aside, EDDB is only as good as the last person that updated it. I've seen systems there stating civil war is active. You go to Galaxy map and its not any longer. I find it easier to just use the Galaxy Map and select the system states. You at least know it's real time.
