Death Race 3300© - Death Race Of Death To The Death

[Below post is a draft document for an E: D race I conceived, a spiritual successor to Death Race 2000, Cannonball Run and Gumball. After I finished writing this, I realized current game mechanics don't allow it - namely playing in "all" group as a cohesive group in the same shared "instance" which has proven impossible in current build, and administering the entry fees securely so that no one can steal or hinder paying of winnings.

Note that this is a first draft, and there are incomplete rules and other funkiness.

Although I will likely not have time to singularly manage this race if game mechanics will ever allow such a race, I have decided to post this for the benefit of the community. Go ahead and copy, borrow, steal and mangle the ideas put forth in this post. Some credit would be nice if you do so, though
 Bonus points for keeping the brutality of the titular race intact!]

Death Race 3300©

MISSION STATEMENT

To determine who is the "fastest" and most "ruthless" pilot in the galaxy on a pre-determined route requiring smart route planning, optimizing refueling stops, and destroying or avoiding PC and NPC hazards in a no-holds-barred "Death Race Of Death To The Death"©.

RULES
1. Use only the ship model specified
2. One ship per participant
3. Any and all modifications to your ship are allowed, but optional
4. If your starting ship is destroyed for any reason (you get shot by a fellow racer, a psychotic station, a non-racing PC, pirate NPC, etc.), you forfeit
5. If you log off for any reason (game crash, network problems, ragequit, cat on keyboard, etc.), you forfeit
6. If an action is not explicitly forbidden in the rules, it is implicitly allowed, and explicitly encouraged
7. Only race completion awards a placing spot. If no one makes it to the goal, no one is declared the winner.
8. If you do not reach the staging area at designated time, you will forfeit
9. Failure to pay the entry fee at staging area is immediate disqualification
10. Failure to promptly follow DR3300 management orders once entry fee is paid until race completion means immediate disqualification
11. All damage to property, legal or living or dead persons, bounties, fines, etc. are responsibility of the racer, and DR3300 management can not be held liable for any monetary or material losses occurring to racers, non-racers, or public property
12. You must finish the race piloting your ship. Escape pod is not your ship.
13. Rules are subject to change up until 24 hours to go to the race

RULES SPECIFIC TO DR3300-1-A

A. Ship to be used is Sidewinder
B. Up to sixteen racers will be allowed in. Announce your desire to be added in this thread. first come, first served.
C. You MUST include your exact commander name in your announcement, or PM it to me at the time of announcement, even if it is the same as your forum name. This is required so that I know who to allow to the private group.
D. Spillover players will be added to the substitution list, and may be called to the race via forum PM up to 24 hours before race start.
E. Race route and specifics will be announced 24 hours before the race in the second post in this thread for all to see, including non-racers

NOTES
- The race itself is expected to take around 30 minutes if at least one racer makes it off the starting line area alive, but be prepared for 60-90 minutes overall due to preparation
- Breaking any of the rules results in disqualification. Egregious rule breaking may result in banning from future race(s), or lifetime ban
- Race will be played "all" group. This means there will be non-racing spectators, some of whom are likely to actively "participate" in the race.
- You must be on TS (server details to be provided to racers on race day)
- TEST YOUR TS WORKS BEFORE RACE DAY so that there is no echo, that others can hear you, and that there are no screaming babies in the background. Use of push-to-talk is highly encouraged. Understanding spoken English is a requirement.
- Use your commander name as your TS handle
- Use of FSD is required due to multi-system route
- Note that you will be required to refuel, so it is your responsibility to ensure all fines and bounties are paid so that you can dock along your route. Tied to this, do realize that if you shoot at fellow racers, non-participating PCs or NPCs, you might end up with a bounty along the race route, hindering your racing and refueling efforts!
- Management of DR3300 will be scouting the route before and during the race, and may - but is not required to - report hazards on the racers-only TS channel
- Procure the entry fee well before the race to ensure timely start

ENTRY FEE

One canister of Palladium is to be brought to the staging area in your racing Sidewinder. You will NOT race with the canister.

PRIZES

All entry fees will be pooled and turned into winnings.

Winner gets 50% of winnings
2nd place gets 25% of winnings
3rd place gets 15% of winnings

Management of DR3300 will keep 10% of winnings for administrative costs.

If the winner is the only one reaching goal, he gets all winnings, less admin fees. If winner and 2nd place are the only ones reaching the goal, they split 3rd place winnings 50/50.

If no one reaches the goal, entry fees are returned, less admin fees. Admin fees are deducted from random participants as the management sees fit. Most likely from the ugliest Commander.

If rounding of winnings is required, winner always gets at least 50% of winnings, and normal rounding is used for 2nd and 3rd placings and management fees. For example, if total winnings are 16 tons, 2nd place gets .25 x 16 = 4 tons, 3rd place gets .15 x 16 = 2 (2.4), management gets .1 x 17 = 2 (1.6), and winner gets 16 - 4 - 2 - 2 = 8.

A bit less death than I would prefer, but it does for now. I'll take part in Buckyball as soon as I get my 38k bounty in Wyrd off my butt.

And bonus points for creative defacement of the OP!

Let's bump heads when game mechanics develop to support a bit more structure to such a race ;)

I believe in subtlety. ;)

But yeah, you've run into what everyone who's trying to come up with player-created events has. Right now the game mechanics just aren't there to support them. That'll change of course, but in the mean time that doesn't mean we can't come up with ways to keep busy in the beta.

Get your time in before it's too late! Everyone who participates gets a free virtual bumpersticker- oh... I see you already have a few. Never mind! :D

Unfortunately it appears that a good portion of current playerbase is railing against anything and everything which could be abused no matter how remote the possibility, or might encourage "griefing" or non-consensual PvP. Throwing the baby out with the bath water and all that.

Hope FD is smarter than that, and will put in mechanics to support such events, as well as other emergent gameplay.

You'll be surprised to hear I'd actually support Death Race of Death to the Death.

My name is Jeff Ryan and I approve this Death Race of Death to the Death. Or Die Trying Not To Die Whilst Death Racing the Death Race of Death to the Death.

Me too. The name had me before I read anything on this thread.

If you could get the word "pain" in the title, I'd follow you to Diso and back.

I would be down for this but it would be helpful to know a general time range in advance.

I'm waiting for better support for instancing which would allow a reasonably-sized (10+) group to reliably play in the same instance in the "all" group, while allowing for random spectators as well.

I would be amenable to try this out in a private group, although that would be the carebear version of the game, as there would be very limited chance for non-racers to join, and would be against the goal of making the "all" group a rich world where you can encounter all kinds of crazy stuff randomly - like people on Buckyball or DR3300 race :)
