General / Off-Topic Finally!!!!!!!!! I'm getting fibre.

It's only taken 2 years to install the damn stuff on my street. But fibre is finally available!

Estimated download speed of 55~Mbs, and upload of 10~Mbs.

Sure beats 5 down, and 0.5 up!

Decided to switch from Sky to BT.
To "upgrade" within sky, they wanted £99 for a new router. I don't want, or need, or can even use their router... I need 3 Ethernet ports... Theirs only has 2.
They also wanted a £60 activation fee.
And then up my payments for £43 a month.
With a top speed of 34Mbs.

BT on the other hand, just a £60 activation fee, and £35 a month.
Plus a £125 MasterCard gift card I can spend anywhere.
With a top speed of 55Mbs.

No brainer. Was tempted to go for a mobile sim card too, £15 for 20Gb of data. Maybe another time. I need to check they run on EE anyway.

Roll on 25th... :D

I'm going to download everything!

Worked for SKY for 3 years man...take it from me..youre better off elsewhere. Promise.

55/10 isn't much to write home about, but it's plenty for ED and you'll likely notice a significant improvement in latency and stability.

I've been on a gigabit line for a while now and everyone in the house can stream multiple video or game-play with no noticeable impact on bandwidth.

55/10 is adequate for most residential settings.

You'll likely be very pleased with the upgrade.

Another benefit is that fiber is usually unaffected by neighborhood load on your local node, unlike cable connections that are affected by how many users are connected to the same node.

Fiber to the node, not premises is my guess.

OP will know if they install an ONT at the house or if there's no changes to the cable in place.

I have an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) in my basement, actually I have 2 of them - one for residential and another for business. If you don't get a local ONT, then it's fiber to the node, but even that should be a significant improvement.

Most installations then use cable from the ONT to a Moca router - but we got support to activate a direct connect to an internal ethernet port on the ONT's and then fed both lines directly to our pfSense box.

2 ISP connections and 6 ip addresses total

Yes, equivalent to a good VDSL2

It's fast and the OP will be happy

Agreed - I used to have 25/25 and was very happy with it.

At a certain point you have enough to service routine application very well and further increases in speed actually don't mean a lot in terms of noticeable performance in a residential setting.

With gigabit service, when you do a speedtest, you start to realize that your not really testing your speed as much as you're testing the speed of the server providing the test.

I have an unusual set up designed for multiple servers using a lot of traffic, far beyond the average residential user's needs. 55/10 in a typical home setting will be just as good in that setting.

Yes.

I have the VDSL2. 3 years ago I had 75/8 and now I have 50/10 (a lot more people connected to VDSL2 in my neighbourhood now). I am very satisfy with my VDSL2

But for this year the FTTH fiber is installed in my village

We will have according to the operators, downloads of 200Mb/s to 1 Gb/s and uploads of 50Mb/s to 200Mb/s

I am preparing to receive several G-Force, in the take off :p

...is absolute garbage.

Still , better than you had so I can only nod and say, nice one fella [yesnod] I can't imagine how pleased you'd be if you actually had 'decent fibre' [haha]

You should try not having an alternative! I get 3.5 mbps on BT ADSL which is a massive improvement on the 2.7 mbps ADSL I got from TalkTalk (I can actually watch some things in HD and get an email pushed to me without bufferiing). No matter how many time 'Steve' from Bangalore re-profiled my line I still got less than the guaranteed lowest speed.

It is looking like I might actually get fibre soon but not because other providers are putting it in.....
